Book British Sheep and Shepherding Classic Reprint

Download or read book British Sheep and Shepherding Classic Reprint written by W. J. MALDEN and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Sheep and Shepherding I would like to call attention to the fact that Chapters XI. To XIX. Are specially designed to enable the inexperienced to follow out the work with the different sections of the flock day by day, and season by season, throughout the year. It sets out what the farmer actually has to do, and in this form I have been assured on many occasions that the year's shepherding and sheep management can be readily grasped by those whose experience is very limited. I would, therefore, suggest that these chapters be read consecutively, so that the thread of the work be gripped and intelligently understood. A mass of facts without connective ness rarely proves useful; and knowledge itself is of little use unless it is turned to account and in writing simply I have tried to reduce to practice anything that has been put forward, so that the least experienced may understand. I would urge the ancient adage With all thy getting, get understanding. To those who are devoting time to the making and improving of breeds, all owe thanks; doubtless they find in it ample interest and reward, for it is a life full of interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The old-time shepherd – lamb in one hand, crook in the other – is an emblem of sturdiness, dependability and independence. He was one of the most important men on the farm, responsible for the care and well-being of the flock, with which he might need to spend days and nights out in open pastures. How did he manage his charges and his own life? What skills and equipment did he use? How did sheep farming change in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and what effect did those changes have on the shepherd's work? These are some of the questions considered by this fully illustrated exploration of shepherding life.

Book The Illustrated Herdwick Shepherd

Download or read book The Illustrated Herdwick Shepherd written by James Rebanks and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am the luckiest man alive, because I get to live and work in the most beautiful place on earth: Matterdale in the English Lake District. When I was a child we didn't really go anywhere, except a week in the Isle of Man when I was about ten years old, and I never left Britain until I was twenty. Even now, years later, the best bit of any travelling is coming home. Bringing us into the world of shepherd's baking competitions, sheep shows and moments out on the fell watching the sheep run away home, James Rebanks interweaves thoughts and reflections on the art of shepherding with his photographs of the valley, people and animals that make up the daily life of the fells. A life lived by the three hundred surviving fell farming families, this is a book of photos and words filled with reverence and love.

Book A Shepherd s Watch

Download or read book A Shepherd s Watch written by David Kennard and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2005-11-29 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At Borough Farm, on North Devon's rugged, spectacular coast, David Kennard and his dogs are embarking on a new shepherding year. Part diary, part Herriot-like homage to the countryside and its characters, this book is a portrait of a real life. Kennard presents twelve months with his working sheepdogs as they face a never-ending series of challenges: from rescuing ewes stranded on the Atlantic cliffs to running the gauntlet of psychopathic rams and officious farm inspectors, from spring lambing and summertime shearing to fending off the ever-present threats nature has in store for the 850-strong flock. All this, in the midst of a harsh economic climate for farming and a landscape that is among the most picturesque, yet wildly unpredictable, in the British Isles. As he follows the changing seasons, he also offers a meditation on man's relationship with his environment, and an elegy to a rural way of life.--From publisher description.

Book The Sheep s Tale

Download or read book The Sheep s Tale written by John Lewis-Stempel and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-04-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An important book on several levels... Read a few sentences out loud, wherever you are.' Rosamund Young Everybody thinks they know what sheep are like: they're stupid, noisy, cowardly ('lambs to the slaughter'), and they're 'sheepwrecking' the environment. Or maybe not. Contrary to popular prejudice, sheep are among the smartest animals in the farmyard, fiercely loyal, forming long and lasting friendships. Sheep, farmed properly, are boons to biodiversity. They also happen to taste good and their fleeces warm us through the winter - indeed, John Lewis-Stempel's family supplied the wool for Queen Elizabeth's 'hose'. Observing the traditional shepherd's calendar, The Sheep's Tale is a loving biography of ewes, lambs, and rams through the seasons. Lewis-Stempel tends to his flock with deep-rooted wisdom, ethical consideration, affection, and humour. This book is a tribute to all the sheep he has reared and sheared - from gregarious Action Ram to sweet Maid Marion. In his inimitable style, he shares the tales that only a shepherd can tell.
