Book British Railway Finance

Download or read book British Railway Finance written by J. Russell Sowray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Railway Finance: With Special Reference to Capital Charges The recently issued Railway Returns of the United Kingdom for the year 1906 contain a formidable array of figures which is not calculated to attract the ordinary reader, though worthy of attentive consideration by those who have a pecuniary interest in railway securities. The writer is not aware that a census has ever been taken, but it would be interesting to know the present number of shareholders in the railways of the United Kingdom; of that great body of proprietors, the majority of whom never attend a half-yearly meeting but are satisfied to act as Bleeping partners, supporting the Directors, when asked to do so, by means of their proxies, and accepting whatever dividend is granted to them, merely regretting that it is not larger and hoping that it may improve in the future. Some (though of course a very imperfect) indication is, however, afforded by a statement at the last half-yearly meeting of the North Eastern Railway Company, when the chairman said that "the Ordinary Stock of the Company was £31,000,000 and the number of Ordinary Shareholders was about 31,000 - an average of £1,000 each." Book British Railways 1948 73

Download or read book British Railways 1948 73 written by T. R. Gourvish and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 1690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, this is a business history of the first twenty-five years of nationalised railways in Britain. Commissioned by the British Railways Board and based on the Board's extensive archives, it fully analyses the dynamics of nationalised industry management and the complexities of the vital relationship with government. After exploring the origins of nationalisation, the book deals with the organisation, financial performance, investment and commercial policies of the British Transport Commission (1948-2), Railway Executive (1948-53) and British Railways Board (1963-73). Calculations of profit and loss, investment, and productivity are provided on a consistent basis for 1948-73. This business history thus represents a major contribution not only to the debate about the role of the railways in a modern economy but also to that concerning the nationalised industries, which have proved to be one of the most enduring problems of the British economy since the war.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Railways: A Financial and Commercial Survey The railway managers of the nineteenth century were continually raising new problems which became more and more difficult as the traffic increased in complexity. As a rule they were much easier to raise than to settle. Very few of them were ever met in a broad, comprehensive spirit and finally disposed of. They were temporised with and bandied about from one Select Committee to another, or from one Royal Commission to another. So they passed on from generation to generation, and some of them are as much alive to-day as they were seventy years ago. Our parliamentary debates on railway questions are crowded with the ghosts of last-century problems still unsolved. The railwaymen of to-day have these problems to wrestle with as well as their own.
