Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Britain emerged form the Second World War in 1945 her motor industry was still geared up to produce the quantities of vehicles, especially commercials, required in wartime. With the urgent need for post-war reconstruction at home and abroad, there was much for such vehicles to do. The liberation of Europe and the Far East meant that these export markets had been opened up again too. This book traces the path of the British lorry through 20 years via the manufacturers' own sales and publicity material, from the revolutionary - but now forgotten - Jensen to classics like the Bedford TK. During the period covered there were approximately 40 manufacturers of commercial vehicles in the United Kingdom. Several were small or specialized firms with limited production while others became absorbed into more successful companies. By 1965 only a few of the larger firms remained, and individuality was fast becoming just a memory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following years of discontent over Home Rule and the Easter Rising, the deaths of two Royal Irish Constabulary policemen in Soloheadbeg at the hands of the IRA in 1919 signalled the outbreak of war in Ireland. The Irish War of Independence raged until a truce between the British Army and the IRA in 1921, historical consensus being that the conflict ended in military stalemate. In A Hard Local War, William Sheeham sets out to prove that no such stalemate existed, and that both sides were continually innovative and adaptive. Using new research and previously unpublished archive material, he traces the experience of the British rank and file, their opinion of their opponents, the special forces created to fight in the Irish countryside, RAF involvement and the evolution of IRA reliance on IEDs and terrorism.

This book was released on 2011-12-23 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few regiments in the British army played such a prominent and widespread part in the Second World War as the Durham Light Infantry. This is the full official account of the 8th battalion of the regiment's role in the conflict in which the DLI in general, and the 8th battalion in particular, more than upheld its long and proud traditions : in the words of the foreword to this book by Lt.Gen. Sir Brian Horrocks, who had the 8th DLI under his command both in North Africa and in Europe : ‘'Every man that served in this great battalion can say to himself with pride, “I did more than my share to win the war”’. The 8th DLI were part of the BEF sent to France in 1939. As such they withstood the onslaught of the German Blitzkrieg in May 1940, taking part in the British counter-strike at Arras and the retreat to Dunkirk. They were soon in action again, this time at Gazala in North Africa where they were again attacked by German forces under Rommel. The 8th DLI formed part of the victorious offensive at El Alamein and fought through to the dour slogging match to break the Mareth Line. Subsequently, they took part in the invasion of Sicily; D-Day, and the battles of Gheel and Nijmegen in Holland. This book, as Horrocks says is a ‘First class battalion history’ written by two former battalion officers. It comes complete with appendices listing Rolls of honour and awards, along with some 20 photographs and fourteen maps.
