Book excerpt: As the sustainability of our natural resources is increasingly questioned, Canadians remain stubbornly convinced of the unassailability of our water. Mounting evidence suggests, however, that Canadian water is under threat. Eau Canada assembles the country's top water experts to discuss our most pressing water issues. Perspectives from a broad range of thinkers geographers, environmental lawyers, former government officials, aquatic and political scientists, and economists reflect the diversity of concerns in water management. Arguing that weak governance is at the heart of Canada's water problems, this timely book identifies our key failings, explores debates over jurisdiction, transboundary waters, exports, and privatization, and maps out solutions for protecting our most important resource.

Book The Reward

Download or read book The Reward written by David McLean and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dave McLean’s life has been one of trials, triumphs, and uncommon adventures. Beginning in the interwar years in Glasgow, Scotland, we learn first of his family’s history in World War I, then his own experience as a boy during World War II—with air raids on Glasgow, Anderson shelters and the impact of shortages. Following the war, as an athletic youth, he pursued his passion for cycling and finished his education becoming a journeyman Carpenter. He did his national service in the Scots Guards from 1953 to 1955. In 1957 he immigrated with his wife Betty to British Columbia. As their family grew, so did his adventures, which took him across British Columbia and the Yukon. His career in Canada started with house construction and went on to include 22 years in mining. After 15 years in municipal public works, Dave wrapped up his career with several years as an independent safety consultant. The themes of marriage and family run throughout the book. Written with the help of his friend and neighbor, Larry Flagg, this memoir captures the ups and downs of life as the author looks back over his eighty-six years. His memories are punctuated with family photos that bring the stories to life and pull us into his world. Through adversity and reward, we learn that the hard work and strife is all worth it in the end.

Book Sustainable Resource Management

Download or read book Sustainable Resource Management written by Wenshan Guo and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 835 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Resource Management Learn how current technologies can be used to recover and reuse waste products to reduce environmental damage and pollution In this two-volume set, Sustainable Resource Management: Technologies for Recovery and Reuse of Energy and Waste Materials delivers a compelling argument for the importance of the widespread adoption of a holistic approach to enhanced water, energy, and waste management practices. Increased population and economic growth, urbanization, and industrialization have put sustained pressure on the world’s environment, and this book demonstrates how to use organics, nutrients, and thermal heat to better manage wastewater and solid waste to deal with that reality. The book discusses basic scientific principles and recent technological advances in current strategies for resource recovery from waste products. It also presents solutions to pressing problems associated with energy production during waste management and treatment, as well as the health impacts created by improper waste disposal and pollution. Finally, the book discusses the potential and feasibility of turning waste products into resources. Readers will also enjoy: A thorough introduction and overview to resource recovery and reuse for sustainable futures An exploration of hydrothermal liquefaction of food waste, including the technology’s use as a potential resource recovery strategy A treatment of resource recovery and recycling from livestock manure, including the current state of the technology and future prospects and challenges A discussion of the removal and recovery of nutrients using low-cost adsorbents from single-component and multi-component adsorption systems Perfect for water and environmental chemists, engineers, biotechnologists, and food chemists, Sustainable Resource Management also belongs on the bookshelves of environmental officers and consultants, chemists in private industry, and graduate students taking programs in environmental engineering, ecology, or other sustainability related fields.

Book Managing Common Pool Groundwater Resources

Download or read book Managing Common Pool Groundwater Resources written by Mary Brentwood and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-03-30 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woldwide, developed and developing countries increasingly depend on groundwater resources for domestic water supply. Since groundwater is a hidden resource and individuals cannot see how much has been used and what is left, this book attempts to make global groundwater use more visible so that policy makers can make informed decisions as to its management. Organized into six geographical regions, the authors describe the various physical, cultural and institutional challenges of groundwater policy and management faced by countries worldwide. Analysis of the challenges and responses to groundwater management at the national level hopes to generate a broader understanding for societies across the globe. Each chapter provides the physical geography and demographics of the country, its water use, problems, law, politics and policy and future implications. Chapters on representative countries within North America, Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Australia and China and Africa provide a comprehensive perspective of groundwater issues internationally.

Book Service Provision and Rural Sustainability

Download or read book Service Provision and Rural Sustainability written by Greg Halseth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to quality services and community infrastructure are vital parts of supporting sustainable and resilient rural and small town places. Renewing outdated infrastructure and supporting the delivery of services in rural communities present significant challenges from the constrained fiscal and policy realities of the 21st century. Drawing upon contributors from five Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, this book describes innovative service delivery and community infrastructure models that are appropriate to the contemporary rural and resource-dependent regions of developed economies. The examples show that an entrepreneurial approach to service delivery and infrastructure provision by local organizations and governments is needed. Critical economic and community development supports are crucial to assist creative and innovative sets of solutions that work for small communities. Chapters in this book argue that community development foundations for resilient rural and small town communities and regions must be co-constructed and co-delivered in partnership by both local and senior government actors, in terms of both policy and committed resources. This volume will be extremely valuable for students, scholars, and community development practitioners exploring policy-making, government initiatives, and community service provision in rural and small town places.

Book Desalination and Water Treatment

Download or read book Desalination and Water Treatment written by Murat Eyvaz and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for fresh water is increasing with the rapid growth of the world's population. In countries and regions with available water resources, it is necessary to ensure the health and safety of the water supply. However, in countries and regions with limited freshwater resources, priority is given to water supply plans and projects, among which the desalination strategy stands out. In the desalination process, membrane and thermal processes are used to obtain fresh water from salty water that is in abundant amounts in the sea. This book will outline valuable scientific contributions to the new desalination and water treatment technologies to obtain high quality water with low negative environmental impacts and cost. The editors would like to record their sincere thanks to the authors for their contributions.
