Book excerpt: The South Pole is a book by Roald Amundsen and it represents an interesting first-hand account of the Norwegian expedition's successful attempt to reach the South Pole in 1911. Amundsen spends a great deal of time talking about logistics and placing of depots in preparation for his polar attempt all the way from the preparation leading up to the initial sea voyage, the voyage itself and then the establishing of a camp at the Antarctic. Although they were lucky with the weather, and Amundsen attributed the success of the expedition to "good luck", it is obvious that the Norwegian expedition was well prepared and ready for the troubles ahead; the equipment, the sledges with well-trained dogs, the supply depots with seal meat at regular intervals along the route, the sunglasses to avoid snow blindness; it was all thought of in advance.

Becoming enthusiastic about Antarctic exploration, he was inspired to organise his own expedition on the Southern Cross, with principal funding from Sir George Newnes, an English newspaper proprietor. The British Antarctic Expedition (1898-1900) of ten men to Cape Adare comprised seven Norwegians, two British and one Australian. This was the first expedition to construct a building in Antarctica, overwinter on land, and use sledge dogs for travel. It also set a new farthest south record. Although Borchgrevink was not an effective leader, and problems developed between the Norwegians and the English speakers, the expedition's scientific and exploratory achievements were significant. First published in 1901, and illustrated with many photographs, this work illuminates these endeavours.

In October 1911 he Visited the Whaling Station at Whangamumu, near the Bay of Islands, and in 1912 he spent four months (july to October) in the same region on two floating factories belonging to the New Zealand Whaling Company. He is the author of the Report on the Cetacea (zoology, Vol. I, N o. That accomplished naturalist and skilful artist, the late Dr. E. A. Wilson, was the chief biologist of the shore party; he was mainly responsible for the collection of Birds, the report on which will include many reproductions of the sketches he made. Dr. Wilson, with the late Lieutenant H. R. Bowers and Mr. A. Cherry-garrard, undertook a most arduous and hazardous winter journey to the Emperor Penguin Rookery at Cape Crozier, to secure eggs with a series of early embryos, material that is now in the hands of Professor J. Cossar Ewart, f.r.s. Staff-surgeon G. Murray Levick, r.n., made numerous observations on the habits of the Adelie Penguin, and has written a report on this subject (zoology, Vol. I, No. 2) illustrated by photographs that he took. Surgeon-captain E. L. Atkinson, r.n., parasitologist to the expedition, collected and studied numerous parasites, the Antarctic material being taken chiefly from seals and fishes during the winter of 1911. On February 3, the Nimrod deposited Shackleton and a party of 14 men at Cape Royds, on Ross Island. The men divided into three groups. One would try to reach the South Pole, a second went north to reach the South Magnetic Pole, while a third was to explore the mountains west of McMurdo Sound. Shackleton, three companions, and four ponies set out for the South Pole on October 29. Enduring great hardship, on January 9, 1909, they attained a latitude of 88°23' S., farther south than any previous expedition. There they were forced to turn back by fierce blizzards and low supplies. They made their way back to the Nimrod and returned safely to New Zealand. In addition to coming to within 97.5 nautical miles (180.6 kilometers) of the pole, the expedition registered two other significant achievements. On March 5-11, 1908 the party of Douglas Mawson, Edgeworth David, and Alistair Mackay made the first ascent of the 3,794-meter Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in Antarctica; and on January 16, 1909, the same three men reached the South Magnetic Pole. The Heart of the Antarctic is Shackleton's two-volume account of the expedition, written on the passage by ocean liner from New Zealand back to Britain and published in October 1909. On December 14, 1911, the Norwegian Roald Amundsen and four companions finally reached the pole.
