But now, after denying her own fledgling powers for years, her increasing supernatural abilities and prophetic visions have become too much for her to deny. She's being called to ascension—where she'll become a winged vampire like Gideon, and face an army of lethal death vampires who thirst for her blood. Now she must harness all her powers in order to protect herself from her darkest enemies...and build a life with the one man who's claimed her soul. Book excerpt: Ken Follett's extraordinary historical epic, the Century Trilogy, reaches its sweeping, passionate conclusion. In Fall of Giants and Winter of the World, Ken Follett followed the fortunes of five international families—American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh—as they made their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements, and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution—and rock and roll. East German teacher Rebecca Hoffmann discovers she’s been spied on by the Stasi for years and commits an impulsive act that will affect her family for the rest of their lives. . . . George Jakes, the child of a mixed-race couple, bypasses a corporate law career to join Robert F. Kennedy's Justice Department and finds himself in the middle of not only the seminal events of the civil rights battle but a much more personal battle of his own. . . . Cameron Dewar, the grandson of a senator, jumps at the chance to do some official and unofficial espionage for a cause he believes in, only to discover that the world is a much more dangerous place than he'd imagined. . . . Dimka Dvorkin, a young aide to Nikita Khrushchev, becomes an agent both for good and for ill as the United States and the Soviet Union race to the brink of nuclear war, while his twin sister, Tanya, carves out a role that will take her from Moscow to Cuba to Prague to Warsaw—and into history.

Book Eighteenth Century Conservatism in Christianity and Islam

Download or read book Eighteenth Century Conservatism in Christianity and Islam written by Ralph A. Leo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the world of religious conservatism in Christianity and Islam through a comparison of two eighteenth-century traditionalist icons, Jonathan Edwards and Muḥammad Ibn 'Abd al-Wahhāb. Spanning the globe from America to Arabia, this book explores the major themes in the lives and works of these most unlikely of bedfellows, the Reverend and the Shaykh. In many ways, Edwards and Ibn 'Abd al-Wahhāb are about as far apart as two figures could possibly be. Without minimizing their very real differences, however, this comparative study finds numerous parallels that beckon even the most conservative of Christians and Muslims to take a second look at their own faith, as well as the faith of the other. The numerous surprising congruences in the worlds of the Reverend and the Shaykh, as well as in their conceptions of God, humanity, and the faith of the other, suggest that we stand much to gain from a reassessment of long-held views that could lead to wholly new patterns of engagement. With implications in diverse fields such as politics, law, philosophy, theology, history, warfare and anthropology, this book unearths striking parallels in Edwards and Ibn 'Abd al-Wahhāb that have heretofore gone unnoticed or largely ignored.
