  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2012-07-03
  • ISBN : 0062131710
  • Pages : 540 pages

Download or read book Dear Photograph written by Taylor Jones and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all have moments we wish we could relive. We'd give anything to skid down the toboggan hills of our youth, to breathe in the smell of our children as babies, or to spend just one more minute with someone we've lost. Dear Photograph provides a way to link these memories from the past to the present, overlapping them to see how the daydreams of our memories collide with our current realities. The idea is simple: hold up a photograph from the past in front of the place where it was originally taken, take a second photograph, and add a sentence of dedication about what the photograph means to you. The results, however, are astounding, which is why millions have flocked to dearphotograph.com and thousands have submitted their own Dear Photographs. This stunning visual compilation includes more than 140 never-before-seen Dear Photographs, as well as a space for you to attach your own cherished photo. By turns nostalgic, charming, and poignant, Dear Photograph evokes childhood memories, laments difficult losses, and, above all, celebrates the universal nature of love.

Book Through My Eyes Why Take That Photo Be a Part of the Photograph Not Just the Photographer

Download or read book Through My Eyes Why Take That Photo Be a Part of the Photograph Not Just the Photographer written by John Madden and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-18 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was always the one not in the pictures as I was always taking them. In this life long process I learned the difference between a picture and a photo. A picture is what we take and a photo has a story. One of my greatest photographic thrills is to have people look at me when I'm photographing something, then look in the direction I'm photographing and look back at me. Then they look again at the direction I'm photographing. Seeing the look of what is he doing? What does he see? Fills me with the "What" the juice of my being?" Or to be asked: "How long did it take you to take that photo?" Answer: "All my life!" Or to be told: "I have a camera, I could take that photo." Reply: Great, go, do it, and find this moment for you. You'll enjoy it. This is not a technical book, it's a PHOTOGRAPHY IS FUN book and every photo has a STORY. The equipment doesn't make you a professional or even a good photographer. YOU DO! Technology rules in so much of our world. It answers our questions, computes our math, governs so much of our lives, tells us what month, day, and time it is, has taken society from knowing ones neighbors to not knowing who lives next door, but at the same time it has shrunk our world to bring us closer together in mind, body, and spirit. There is a saying: "We are all one people" and technology has brought that to the forefront more than before. At the same time it has challenged outdoor activities, social contact, and human nature. There are so many technical photography books but none that I know of tell the story of why the photo taken. I want people to learn how to see what others don't, to look for the banquet Mother Natures gives us everyday, to feel the photo, and to become aware of the pure fun and joy of photography.

Book Pictures Bring Us Messages

Download or read book Pictures Bring Us Messages written by Alison Kay Brown and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1925, Beatrice Blackwood of the University of Oxford's Pitt Rivers Museum took thirty-three photographs of Kainai people on the Blood Indian Reserve in Alberta as part of an anthropological project. In 2001, staff from the museum took copies of these photographs back to the Kainai and worked with community members to try to gain a better understanding of Kainai perspectives on the images. 'Pictures Bring Us Messages' is about that process, about why museum professionals and archivists must work with such communities, and about some of the considerations that need to be addressed when doing so. Exploring the meanings that historic photographs have for source communities, Alison K. Brown, Laura Peers, and members of the Kainai Nation develop and demonstrate culturally appropriate ways of researching, curating, archiving, accessing, and otherwise using museum and archival collections. They describe the process of relationship building that has been crucial to the research and the current and future benefits of this new relationship. While based in Canada, the dynamics of the 'Pictures Bring Us Messages' project is relevant to indigenous peoples and heritage institutions around the world.

Book Get the Picture

Download or read book Get the Picture written by John Godfrey Morris and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002-06-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do photojournalists get the pictures that bring us the action from the world's most dangerous places? How do picture editors decide which photos to scrap and which to feature on the front page? Find out in Get the Picture, a personal history of fifty years of photojournalism by one of the top journalists of the twentieth century. John G. Morris brought us many of the images that defined our era, from photos of the London air raids and the D-Day landing during World War II to the assassination of Robert Kennedy. He tells us the inside stories behind dozens of famous pictures like these, which are reproduced in this book, and provides intimate and revealing portraits of the men and women who shot them, including Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and W. Eugene Smith. A firm believer in the power of images to educate and persuade, Morris nevertheless warns of the tremendous threats posed to photojournalists today by increasingly chaotic wars and the growing commercialism in publishing, the siren song of money that leads editors to seek pictures that sell copies rather than those that can change the way we see the world.

Book excerpt: With the candid quirkiness of Awkward Family Photos and the confessional intimacy of PostSecret, Ransom Riggs's Talking Pictures is a haunting collection of antique found photographs—with evocative inscriptions that bring these lost personal moments to life—from the author of the New York Times bestselling illustrated novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Each image in Talking Pictures reveals a singular, frozen moment in a person’s life, be it joyful, quiet, or steeped in sorrow. Yet the book’s unique depth comes from the writing accompanying each photo: as with the caption revealing how one seemingly random snapshot of a dancing couple captured the first dance of their 40-year marriage, each successive inscription shines like a flashbulb illuminating a photograph’s particular context and lighting up our connection to the past.

Book Urban Youth and Photovoice

Download or read book Urban Youth and Photovoice written by Melvin Delgado and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade brought forth a wave of excitement and promise for researchers and practitioners interested in community practice as an approach based on social justice principles and an embrace of community participatory actions. But, effective community practice is predicated on the availability and use of assessment methods that not only capture and report on conditions, but also simultaneously set the stage for social change efforts. This research, therefore, serves the dual purpose of generating knowledge and also being an integral part of social intervention. Research done in this way, however, requires new tools. Photovoice is one such tool - a form of visual ethnography that invites participants to represent their community or point of view through photographs, accompanied by narratives, to be shared with each other and with a broader community. Urban Youth and Photovoice focuses on the use of this method within urban settings and among adolescents and young adults - a group that is almost naturally drawn to the use of photography (especially digital and particularly in today's era of texting, facebook, and instagram) to showcase photovoice as an important qualitative research method for social workers and others in the social sciences, and providing readers with detailed theoretical and practical account of how to plan, implement, and evaluate the results of a photovoice project focused on urban youth.
