Brede Kristensen (1867-1953) and on other founding fathers in the Scandinavian countries. Other contributors discuss methodological questions relating to the idea of a phenomenology of religion. Furthermore, an attempt is made to compare the study of religion at the end of the twentieth century with the situation a hundred years earlier, and to trace some of the lines of development. Some of these publications are historical in character and were designed to give the reader an idea of the origin, meaning, and function of phenom enological psychology and its most important trends. Others are theoretical in nature and were written to give the reader an insight into the ways in which various authors conceive of phenomenological psychology and how they attempt. to justify their views in light of the philosophical assumptions underlying their conceptions. Finally, there are a great number of publications in which the authors do not talk about phenomenological psychology, but rather try to do what was described as possible and necessary in the first two kinds of publications. Some of these at tempts to do the latter have been quite successful; in other cases the results have 1 been disappointing. This anthology contains a number of essays which I have brought together for the explicit purpose of introducing the reader to the Dutch school in phenomenological psychology. The Dutch school occupies an important place in the phenomenological move ment as a whole. Buytendijk was one of the first Dutch scholars to contribute to the field, and for several decades he remained the central figure of the school.

This book describes for the first time how a scholar of the Dutch language, whose etymological dictionary of the Dutch language is still considered the best of its kind, was appointed in 1913 to the newly created Chair in Slavic languages at Leiden University and built up a tremendous reputation for himself in Eastern Europe. Van Wijk's relations with his famous teacher, the linguist C.C. Uhlenbeck, are followed attentively, as is his postgraduate apprenticeship in Leipzig (1902-1903), where he followed August Leskien's lectures in Slavic studies. Attention is also paid to the various aspects of Van Wijk's enormous oeuvre covering the whole field of Slavic studies and of phonology, of which he was one of the pioneers. Van Wijk did not, however, follow the lines approved for the social conduct of a Leiden professor and was at one time suspected by the police of communist activities. His commitment to materially helping all he could from an Eastern Europe torn apart by the First World War and its aftermath was exceptional. His fascination with all things Russian is a background theme that played throughout his life and even at his death: son of a Dutch Reformed minister, the bachelor Van Wijk was buried in a grave surmounted by a Russian Orthodox cross beside his Russian foster son, who died young. This book is of interest to Slavists, linguists and cultural historians.

The selection of subjects is based in part by the questions that came to the author over the years, but even more by the preference of the author himself. In this respect, it is a personal book. Thus, it should be stressed that the book is not a ‘handbook’ or even a ‘textbook’; many subjects that commonly are treated in such books are not included here. Not because they lack importance, but because the author feels that they are adequately treated elsewhere. Some relevant works are mentioned in the References. Over the years, the author has been engaged in giving courses on vision and lighting, lately more in particular on Masterclasses on a post-graduate or post-doctorate level.

Book excerpt: The nature of what has been termed the ""phenomenology of religion"" has been the subject of controversy and confusion within the academic study of religion since the early 1950s. Here George Alfred James attempts to clarify the subject through an exploration of the self-understanding of three of its key exponents: Pierre D�niel Chantepie de la Saussaye, W. Brede Kristensen, and Gerardus van der Leeuw. Though the three are widely acknowledged to have had a decisive impact on the phenomenology of religion, they are not widely studied. James deals with each of the three in turn and shows how each saw his efforts as at once a-historical, a-theological, and anti-reductive. According to James, this family of phenomenological approaches can contribute a wealth of insight to the study of religion today. The author offers a groundbreaking challenge to the received image of the phenomenology of religion as an approach of merely historical interest. He shows that phenomenology of religion is not a development or application of the philosophical method initiated by Edmund Husserl, but an approach to religion that has its own claim to authenticity as a discipline distinct from theology, from the history of religions, and from contemporary social scientific approaches to religion. Phenomenology of religion is revealed to be a radical departure from contemporary efforts to understand the religious dimension of human nature and culture. Interpreting Religion reveals how the exponents of the phenomenology of religion were concerned with avoiding doctrinaire interpretations on the one hand and reductionism on the other, and explains their varying strategies for achieving this goal. It also shows how successive efforts toward a phenomenological approach to religion have addressed the weaknesses, and built upon the insights, of earlier efforts of this nature. The book advocates a reexamination of the phenomenology of religion in the light of recent developments in post-modern theology, literary criticism, and philosophy. George Alfred James lives in Denton, Texas, where he is associate professor of philosophy and religion studies at the University of North Texas. He has contributed articles to a variety of publications, including The Journal of Religion and The Encyclopedia of Religion.
