Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My greatest debt in the writing of this book is to my teacher Dr. Ulrich Middeldorf, who taught me the methodology of research in art history, and who guided my studies of art theory and criticism. This study, which in an earlier form was accepted as a doctoral dissertation by the University of Chicago, was begun under Dr. Middeldorf's guidance, and during all stages of its preparation I benefited from his invaluable suggestions and criticism. A United States Government Grant enabled me to complete my researches on Rembrandt in the Netherlands, where I studied at the Rijksuniversiteit te Utrecht with Dr. J.G. van Gelder, who was particularly generous with his knowledge and time. He read the manuscript and proofs, and offered numerous suggestions and additions which have been of great benefit to me. Special acknowledgement is made to the Kunsthistorisch lnstituut der Rijksuniversiteit te Utrecht for generously finding a place for this study in the Utrechtse Bij dragen tot de Kunstgeschiedenis. I am also much indebted to Dr. H. Schulte Nordholt of the Kunsthistorisch lnstituut for his valuable advice and his help inseeing the book through the press.

Book excerpt: "The Moyne Report is perhaps the most referenced material related to the dark ages of Britain s colonial reign in the West Indies. The damning report on the working and living conditions in the colonies was ironically commissioned by the British government and the findings delivered in 1940 they were only made public at the end of the Second World War in 1945. Seventy years later, the report is re-presented with an updated introduction by Professor Denis Benn, who ably contextualizes the findings informed not only by his scholarly work but also as a witness to the many labour disputes and agitation for better working and living conditions for the poor and working class citizens of the region. These 21 artists constitute the Pont- Aven Group. Eleven were French-born, but of these only three were native Bretons (Chamaillard, Jourdan, and Maufra); the remainder were mixed European - three Danish, two English, two Dutch, one Irish, one Swiss, and one Polish. Their social and educated backgrounds were as disparate as their places of birth. Yet between 1886 and 1894, in and around the small Brittany town of Pont-Aven, they helped forge a new style of painting, led by their eldest member, Paul Gauguin."--Amazon.

Download or read book Stranger On The Earth written by Albert J. Lubin and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 1996-08-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The personality of Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890)—a 19th-century combination of dropout, rebel, and genius—and the source of his enormous achievement continue to fascinate people as deeply as his vivid, wildly painted canvasses of sunflowers, peasants, and starry nights. In this first and only in-depth study of the relationship between van Gogh's psychological development and his art, Albert J. Lubin, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry (Emeritus) at Stanford University and a practicing psychoanalyst, draws on the tremendous wealth of information available about van Gogh, to explore his personal conflicts in the context of the forces that molded him: familial, historical, cultural, religious, artistic, and literary. Dr. Lubin approaches van Gogh not as a mysterious mix of sick eccentric and martyred artist, but as a complete man who transformed his suffering into a phenomenal body of work. Lubin's daring psychological insights and art criticism allow us to better understand, and more fully appreciate, van Gogh's artistic triumph over his inner torment.
