Book The Letters of Emily Lady Tennyson

Download or read book The Letters of Emily Lady Tennyson written by Baroness Emily Sellwood Tennyson Tennyson and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1974 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters in this volume, virtually all of them personal letters to close friends and relatives, cover nearly fifty years of Emily Tennyson's life, from shortly before her marriage right up to the week of her death. These letters tell the reader much about the Tennysons' acquaintances and their guests at Farringford and Aldworth, many of them among the literary and political luminaries of the day. But more importantly they comment on Tennyson himself and on daily life in the Tennyson household. Written with no thought of posterity, Lady Tennyson's letters reveal the domestic Tennyson, just as he was, for the first time. They reveal crucial information about Tennyson's reading and his intellectual and spiritual preoccupations; and they will contribute in time to a better understanding of the complexities and subtleties of Tennyson's verse. Of course, these letters also provide a running account of the life of Emily Tennyson herself, and they give a valid impression of the sort of woman she really was. Her common sense and her erudition, her tolerance and her boundless kindness, her appreciation and command of music and other arts, her social and political awareness, her persuasive effect on Tennyson's poetry, and her shaping influence on the lives of the people who knew her best--all these aspects of Emily Tennyson are displayed in her correspondence.

Book Tennyson

Download or read book Tennyson written by John Batchelor and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Lord Tennyson, Queen Victoria's favorite poet, commanded a wider readership than any other of his time. His ascendancy was neither the triumph of pure genius nor an accident of history: he skillfully crafted his own career and his relationships with his audience. Fame and recognition came, lavishly and in abundance, but the hunger for more never left him. Resolving never to be anything except 'a poet', he wore his hair long, smoked incessantly, and sported a cloak and wide-brimmed Spanish hat.Tennyson ranged widely in his poetry, turning his interests in geology, evolution and Arthurian legend into verse, but much of his work relates to his personal life. The poet who wrote The Lady of Shalott and The Charge of the Light Brigade has become a permanent part of our culture. This enjoyable and thoughtful new biography shows him as a Romantic as well as a Victorian, exploring both the poems and the pressures of his era, and the personal relationships that made the man.

Download or read book Testamentary Acts written by Michael Millgate and published by Oxford ; Toronto : Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Note to copywriters: put in Biograph section The testamentary acts of Michael Millgate's title are those strategies of self-protection and self-projection - textual and personal, before and after death - by which authors seek in old age to enhance posterity's view of themselves and their work. The four figures examined here in detail -Robert Browning, Alfred Tennyson, Henry James, and Thomas Hardy - sought to maintain their personal privacy and control the integrity of their texts by, for example, destroying documents, writing autobiographies, revising their earlier works and supplying them with retrospective prefaces, andpublishing so-called 'collected' editions that omitted items they no longer wished to preserve. These and other strategies have been widely practised by writers, but can have altogether unanticipated results; and this study also examines the difficult role of such literary executors as PenBrowning, Hallam Tennyson, and Florence Hardy, called upon to exercise a delegated, hence compromised, authority. The wills and wishes of many other literary figures, from Samuel Johnson to Walt Whitman to Philip Larkin, occupy the final section, which emphasizes the importance for contemporary biographers and editors of attention to these end-games - to the often disregarded final years of writers, and toboth the intentions and the consequences of their explicit and implicit testamentary acts.

Book The Ladies Repository

Download or read book The Ladies Repository written by and published by . This book was released on 1866 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
