It describes the founders of these homes, of which thousands were established, the children who lived there, their parents (who were considered bad or incompetent educators), and the re-education that took place in these homes. It describes also the role of religion, private philanthropy and the government, child welfare legislation, and child science. «By ceaselessly observing their behaviour and character, by correcting the bad habits, weaknesses and impulses they exhibit, and by developing and reinforcing the positive properties and characteristics they possess», so founders of one of these homes described their will to change the child. From the perspective of enlightened philanthropy, which was based on optimistic views on the child and mankind, change meant betterment. To Evangelical philanthropists, who held pessimistic views on the child and mankind based on the dogma of original sin, change meant atonement and salvation. In child pathology - the science developed at the end of the nineteenth century which studied problem children - change meant diagnostics and therapy.

Book excerpt: This book is a comparative history that explores the social, cultural, and political formation of the modern nation through the construction of public schooling. It asks how modern school systems arose in a variety of different republics and non-republics across four continents during the period from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. The authors begin with the republican preoccupation with civic virtue – the need to overcome self-interest in order to take up the common interest – which requires a form of education that can produce individuals who are capable of self-guided rational action for the public good. They then ask how these educational preoccupations led to the emergence of modern school systems in a disparate array of national contexts, even those that were not republican. By examining historical changes in republicanism across time and space, the authors explore central epistemologies that connect the modern individual to community and citizenship through the medium of schooling. Ideas of the individual were reformulated in the nineteenth century in reaction to new ideas about justice, social order, and progress, and the organization and pedagogy of the school turned these changes into a way to transform the self into the citizen.

Calvinism prevailed as the public faith, yet Catholicism experienced a resurgence in the first half of the seventeenth century, with membership rivaling that of the Calvinist church. In a wide-ranging analysis of a marginalized yet vibrant religious minority, Charles Parker examines this remarkable revival. It had little to do with the traditional Dutch reputation for tolerance. A keen sense of persecution, combined with a vigorous program of reform, shaped a movement that imparted meaning to Catholics in a Protestant republic. A pastoral organization known as the Holland Mission emerged to establish a vigorous Catholic presence. A chronic shortage of priests enabled laymen and women to exercise an exceptional degree of leadership in local congregations. Increased interaction between clergy and laity reveals a picture that differs sharply from the standard account of the Counter-Reformation's clerical dominance and imposition of church reform on a reluctant populace. There were few places in early modern Europe where a proscribed religious minority was so successful in remaining a permanent fixture of society. Faith on the Margins casts light on the relationship between religious minorities and hostile environments.
