Book International Publishing in the Netherlands 1933 1945

Download or read book International Publishing in the Netherlands 1933 1945 written by Hendrik Edelman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International publishing in the Netherlands had a glorious tradition in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A remarkable revival took place after 1933, when several Dutch publishers began to issue books written by exiles of the Nazi regime in the German language. The decline of German scholarly and scientific publishing during the same time inspired a number of other Dutch publishers to expand their programs or start new ones. As the English language became more prominent internationally, enterprising Dutch publishers began to explore these markets as well. After the Germans invaded the Netherlands, a number of printers began to produce finely printed books and pamphlets in many languages clandestinely, as an act of defiance or to raise money for underground causes. This book documents these trends and events in the form of a series of bio-bibliographical portraits of the major participating publishers.

Book Taxing German Dutch Cross Border Activities

Download or read book Taxing German Dutch Cross Border Activities written by Bert Alink and published by Institut für Finanz- und Steuerrecht, Universität Osnabrück. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-border economic activity is gaining more and more importance. This is especially true for the border region between Germany and the Netherlands. The GD Tax Centre was founded to research on the taxation of such activities in 2012. The GD Tax Centre brought together renowned scientists and a significant number of emerging young talents from both sides of the border over a period of three years. This anthology represents some of the research results of the GD Tax Centre. Further research results have been made public via events, presentations or academic publications and a variety of other ways. It consists of many different articles, which mainly discuss topics of cross-border business activities and compare the tax treatment in Germany and the Netherlands. An enormous part of this book focuses on the new German-Dutch tax treaty, which hopefully will enter into force in January 2016. Additionally some articles concern a more general or even a more specific research question. Download or read book Fish Larval Physiology written by Roderick Nigel Finn and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a resource for students and researchers interested in developmental biology and physiology and specifically addresses the larval stages of fish. Fish larvae (and fish embryos) are not small juveniles or adults. Rather they are transitionary organisms that bridge the critical gap between the singlecelled egg and sexually immature juvenile. Fish larvae represent the stage of the life cycle that is used for differentiation, feeding and distribution. The book aims at providing a single-volume treatise that explains how fish larvae develop and differentiate, how they regulate salt, water and acid-base balance, how they transport and exchange gases, acquire and utilise energy, how they sense their environment, and move in their aquatic medium, how they control and defend themselves, and finally how they grow up.

Book The Polish Catholic Church under German Occupation

Download or read book The Polish Catholic Church under German Occupation written by Jonathan Huener and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939, it aimed to destroy Polish national consciousness. As a symbol of Polish national identity and the religious faith of approximately two-thirds of Poland's population, the Roman Catholic Church was an obvious target of the Nazi regime's policies of ethnic, racial, and cultural Germanization. Jonathan Huener reveals in The Polish Catholic Church under German Occupation that the persecution of the church was most severe in the Reichsgau Wartheland, a region of Poland annexed to Nazi Germany. Here Catholics witnessed the execution of priests, the incarceration of hundreds of clergymen and nuns in prisons and concentration camps, the closure of churches, the destruction and confiscation of church property, and countless restrictions on public expression of the Catholic faith. Huener also illustrates how some among the Nazi elite viewed this area as a testing ground for anti-church policies to be launched in the Reich after the successful completion of the war. Based on largely untapped sources from state and church archives, punctuated by vivid archival photographs, and marked by nuance and balance, The Polish Catholic Church under German Occupation exposes both the brutalities and the limitations of Nazi church policy. The first English-language investigation of German policy toward the Catholic Church in occupied Poland, this compelling story also offers insight into the varied ways in which Catholics—from Pope Pius XII, to members of the Polish episcopate, to the Polish laity at the parish level—responded to the Nazi regime's repressive measures.

Book Churches and Religion in the Second World War

Download or read book Churches and Religion in the Second World War written by Jan Bank and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the wealth of historical literature on the Second World War, the subject of religion and churches in occupied Europe has been undervalued – until now. This critical European history is unique in delivering a rich and detailed analysis of churches and religion during the Second World War, looking at the Christian religions of occupied Europe: Catholicism, Lutheranism, Calvinism, and Orthodoxy. The authors engage with key themes such as relations between religious institutions and the occupying forces; religion as a key factor in national identity and resistance; theological answers to the Fascist and National Socialist ideologies, especially in terms of the persecution of the Jews; Christians as bystanders or protectors in the Holocaust; and religious life during the war. Churches and Religion in the Second World War will be of great value to students and scholars of European history, the Second World War and religion and theology.
