Download or read book Continentalizing Canada written by Gregory J. Inwood and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free trade has been a highly contentious issue since the Conservative government of Brian Mulroney negotiated the first deal with the United States in the 1980s. Tracing the roots of Canada's contemporary involvement in North American free trade back to the Royal Commission on the Economic Union and Development Prospects for Canada in 1985 - also known as the Macdonald Commission - Gregory J. Inwood offers a critical examination of the commission and how its findings affected Canada's political and economic landscape, including its present-day reverberations. Using original research - including content analysis, interviews, archival information, and surveys of relevant literature - Inwood argues that the Macdonald Commission created an atmosphere and political discourse that made the continentalization of Canada possible by way of free trade agreements with the U.S. and Mexico. Through the use of a suspect research program, and with the aid of a select oligarchy within the Commission and the government bureaucracy, opposition to continentalism from both the majority of the Canadian population and even several commissioners was ignored. Accessible to readers interested in Canadian politics, policy, or economy, Continentalizing Canada offers a thorough examination into the Macdonald Commission and the resulting discourse in the Canadian political economy.

This book was released on 1963-12-15 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an attempt to find a solution to the problem of fiscal adjustment between a province or a state and its municipalities–a pressing problem throughout Canada and the United States and in many other countries in view of the great disparities in the revenue-raising capacity of municipalities, their limited tax bases, and the pressure on them to provide higher levels of public services. The principles developed are of general applicability, but their use is illustrated by using Nova Scotia as a case study. The first of the series "Atlantic Provinces Studies" established by the Social Science Research Council of Canada to encourage research on the economic and social problems of the Atlantic Provinces.

Download or read book Natural Resources In U S Canadian Relations Volume 1 written by Carl E. Beigie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined efforts of the World Peace Foundation, the C. D. Howe Research Institute, and the Centre Québécois de Relations Internationales have culminated in a comprehensive three-volume study of critical U.S.-Canadian resource issues. Motivated initially by the tensions of the mid-1970s and by U.S. concern about the actions of its major non-energy resource supplier, Canada, the study grew to examine bilateral resource issues from a long-term perspective. The first volume traces the background of the U.S.-Canadian resource connection, analyzes the evolution of resource policies and processes in the two countries, and introduces the domestic and bilateral policy issues that have emerged regarding natural resource development and trade. Contributors examine the possibility that Canada might seek to exploit its resource position by taking actions detrimental to U.S. interests. Volume II, Patterns and Trends in Resource Supplies and Policies, presents detailed case studies of nine specific resources of interest to both countries. Volume III, Perspectives, Prospects, and Policy Options, examines the resource sector from the perspectives of corporate investors, workers, and environmentalists and concludes with a review of policy options and prospects for the bilateral relationship.

Download or read book The Canadian Quandary written by Harry G. Johnson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry G. Johnson is best known as one of Canada's most respected economists, particularly for his research on international trade and finance and monetary policy. But Johnson was also a prolific and influential public intellectual. A sharp and popular polemicist, he wrote on a wide range of subjects, from advertising to affluence to foreign investment, and was published in Punch and The Spectator as well as all the leading economic journals. The Canadian Quandary is a collection of "unbuttoned" pieces written in Johnson's witty and acerbic style between 1958 and 1963. Focusing on Canadian policy on trade and foreign policy, the volume includes Johnson's classic dismemberment of the Canadian nationalist movement. Although Trudeau's Foreign Investment Review Agency and National Energy Policy have been dismantled, economic nationalism persists; it is a testament to both the lucidity of Johnson's mind and the vigour and clarity of his writing that many of his opinions on this debate remain fresh, interesting, and relevant. William Watson's introduction provides an intriguing look at Johnson's life and work.
Download or read book Telecom Nation written by Laurence B. Mussio and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001-04-27 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laurence Mussio examines how federal and provincial public policy tried to keep pace with the diffusion of telecommunications, consumer demand, and a rising tide of technological innovation. Telecommunications regulation struggled to maintain a balance between producer and consumer in an increasingly complex field and policy makers were compelled to defend the national interest in international telecommunications arrangements or by making far-reaching decisions about transcontinental microwave systems and satellites. By the late 1960s national policy makers had embraced the arrival of the computer - especially once it began to be wired into Canada's communications infrastructure. Telecom Nation explores the impact of the computer on government policy and the first attempts to build a "national computer utility" - the beginnings of the Internet - twenty-five years before it became a reality. Based primarily on the rich and largely untapped sources at the National Archives of Canada, Cabinet records, provincial archives, and private sector repositories, Telecom Nation provides an essential background to contemporary public policy issues by examining how governments reconciled technological change, private enterprise, consumer demand, and the public good in communications. It will be required reading for students and specialists interested in telecommunications, public policy, and technological change.
Download or read book Heritage Languages written by Jim Cummins and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the authors decry the creation of a version of Canadian identity that actively discourages the cultivation of many of its citizens' languages. If multilingualism is regarded as a valuable asset both for the individual and for society, then why do so many Canadians vehemently oppose the teaching of heritage languages? Why do many parents who demand that their children be given the opportunity to become bilingual in French and English protest angrily at the fact that their tax dollars are being used to teach the languages of immigrant children? Why is it appropriate to promote multilingualism in private schools but not in the public school system? Is multilingualism good for the rich but bad for the poor? Heritage Languages examines the difficulties experienced integrating heritage languages into official curricula, and the successful efforts to teach Ukrainian, Italian, Hebrew, ASL, Portuguese and Punjabi in Canadian classrooms. An Our Schools/Our Selves book.
