Let us notice what is meant by Algebraic Quantity, and how the notion of it may originate. The primitive conception of number is used when we enumerate the marbles in a box, and say: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. Our simple scale is arithmetical quantity, and it runs down to a definite nothing, or zero, and stops. But let us attempt to apply this scale in the measurement of other things. Suppose we are estimating time. Where is the zero from which all time is to be measured in one direction, or sense? There is no such zero, as in the case of the marbles; for you can conceive of no event so far past but what other events preceded it. We are forced to select a standard event, and measure the time of other events with reference to the lapse before or after that. The zero used is an arbitrary one, and there is quantity in reference to it in two opposite senses, future and past, or, as is said in algebra, positive and negative. We are likewise obliged to recognize quantity as extending both ways from a zero in the attempt to measure many other things; in locating points along an east and west line, no point is so far west but what other points are west of it, hence could not be located in the arithmetical scale; the same in measuring force, which may be attractive or repulsive; or motion, which may be toward or from; etc. Thus our notion of algebraic quantity, as we name this kind of number, has arisen. This book was written during and for that course. By no way does it claim to be too exhaustive. It was originally intended as a brief introduction to algebra for an extremely pleasant and passionate audience. It certainly reflects some of the author’s own tastes, and it was influenced by the feelings and the reactions of the students. Nevertheless, the result covers some advanced undergraduate algebra (rings, ideals, basics of fields theory, algebraic integers, modules, hom and tensor functors, projective modules, etc.) illustrated by numerous examples, counterexamples and exercises. Following a worldwide tradition, the author had planned to conclude by lecturing on the structure of finitely generated modules over principal ideal domains. But during the course, after explaining that the notion of projective modules is more natural than the notion of free modules, it became clear that principal ideal domains needed to be replaced by Dedekind rings; this is much less traditional in the literature — but not more difficult.

A theoretical exposition is given in some detail and varies from standard treatments in leading to a method of calculation that arises directly from it. The book contains many 'drill' examples, which the author considers essential.
