Book British Culture and the First World War

Download or read book British Culture and the First World War written by Toby Thacker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First World War has been mythologized since 1918, and many paradigmatic views of it - that it was pointless, that brave soldiers were needlessly sacrificed - are deeply embedded in the British consciousness. More than in any other country, these collective British memories were influenced by the experiences and the work of writers, painters and musicians. This book revisits the British experience of the War through the eyes and ears of a diverse group of carefully selected novelists, poets, composers and painters. It examines how they reacted to and portrayed their experiences in the trenches on the Western Front, in distant theatres of war and on the home front, in words, pictures and music that would have a profound influence on subsequent British perceptions of the war. Rupert Brooke, Vera Brittain, Richard Nevinson, Paul Nash, Edward Elgar and T. E. Lawrence are amongst the figures discussed in this original exploration of the First World War and British collective memory. The book includes illustrations and maps to aid further study and research.

Book Privacy in the Age of Shakespeare

Download or read book Privacy in the Age of Shakespeare written by Ronald Huebert and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-05-09 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For at least a generation, scholars have asserted that privacy barely existed in the early modern era. The divide between the public and private was vague, they say, and the concept, if it was acknowledged, was rarely valued. In Privacy in the Age of Shakespeare, Ronald Huebert challenges these assumptions by marshalling evidence that it was in Shakespeare’s time that the idea of privacy went from a marginal notion to a desirable quality. The era of transition begins with More’s Utopia (1516), in which privacy is forbidden. It ends with Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667), in which privacy is a good to be celebrated. In between come Shakespeare’s plays, paintings by Titian and Vermeer, devotional manuals, autobiographical journals, and the poetry of George Herbert and Robert Herrick, all of which Huebert carefully analyses in order to illuminate the dynamic and emergent nature of early modern privacy.

Book Women Creating Women

Download or read book Women Creating Women written by Patricia Boyle Haberstroh and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1996-02-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women Creating Women is a pioneering exploration of contemporary Irish women poets that should provide a frame of reference for all future discussion of this topic. Patricia Haberstroh focuses on five poets in particular, beginning with Eithne Strong and Nuala Nf Dhomhnaill, both of whom still write in the Irish language—each emphasizing the importance of the female perspective on the human experience. She then turns her attention to three of the best-known contemporary poets: Eavan Boland, the most highly esteemed; Medbh McGuckian, the most difficult and original; and Eilean Ni Chuilleanain, whose poems make some of the stronger statements about the need to balance a male with a female perspective to broaden the human vision. Drawing on a wide reading of the poets' works and extensive personal interviews with them, Haberstroh demonstrates the emergence of a more self-conscious and self-confident female poet who is ready to rewrite the story of Irish women and redefine and explore female identity and the image of women in Irish history, culture, and literature. Her final chapter explores Irish women's poetry since 1980. This book is a celebration of poets, poetry, and Ireland that allows the reader to discover the works of these fine poets.

Book Black Post Blackness

  • Author : Margo Natalie Crawford
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2017-05-12
  • ISBN : 0252099559
  • Pages : 405 pages

Download or read book Black Post Blackness written by Margo Natalie Crawford and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2008 cover of The New Yorker featured a much-discussed Black Power parody of Michelle and Barack Obama. The image put a spotlight on how easy it is to flatten the Black Power movement as we imagine new types of blackness. Margo Natalie Crawford argues that we have misread the Black Arts Movement's call for blackness. We have failed to see the movement's anticipation of the "new black" and "post-black." Black Post-Blackness compares the black avant-garde of the 1960s and 1970s Black Arts Movement with the most innovative spins of twenty-first century black aesthetics. Crawford zooms in on the 1970s second wave of the Black Arts Movement and shows the connections between this final wave of the Black Arts movement and the early years of twenty-first century black aesthetics. She uncovers the circle of black post-blackness that pivots on the power of anticipation, abstraction, mixed media, the global South, satire, public interiority, and the fantastic.
