Download or read book Developing New Identities in Social Conflicts written by Esperanza Morales-López and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflicts are inherent to human society, but most of them do not concern us directly as participants or eyewitnesses. How we see social conflicts depends on how they are presented to us. This volume gathers together writings by contemporary specialists in different fields, from different backgrounds, cultures and locations, but united by a common thread: the conviction that history and current affairs are constructed and presented, not according to the facts themselves, but according to media, culture, politics, gender, religion and other factors.

Download or read book Eugenio Coseriu written by Johannes Kabatek and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-09-18 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugenio Coseriu counts among the most important linguistic scholars of the second half of the 20th century. He is known mainly as a structuralist and a Romance linguist, but his work is in fact far more expansive in scope, including a comprehensive linguistic theory as well as writings on a wide range of issues, from semantics, syntax, typology, variational linguistics, language change, pragmatics and text linguistics to Vulgar Latin, the history of the philosophy of language and the history of Romance linguistics. Coseriu's thought is founded on solid philosophical principles, and his life brought him into contact with a number of different academic traditions and cultures. However, for a variety of reasons (among which, the languages in which he tended to publish: Spanish, Italian, French and German), knowledge of his thought is rather marginal in the Anglo-American world. This book aims to go some way to addressing this situation by offering an overview in English of Coseriu's main contributions to linguistics, and indeed to other disciplines. It is of general interest for the study of linguistics, the history of linguistics, and the philosophy of language, as well as for a broader reading public.

Download or read book Contestatory Cuban Short Story of the Revolution written by José B. Alvarez and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: José Alvarez, in Contestatory Cuban Short Story of the Revolution, presents a unique analysis of counter-cultural narratives written in Cuba. Because the short story, to a great extent, never ceases to be a marginal production, Alvarez approaches the Cuban short story with the rigor of contemporary cultural studies, which involves the theoretical imperative of examining cultural production as an ideological reading of the sociopolitical context in which it occurs and in which it is distributed, consumed, and interpreted. This book complements other books written about the works of Reinaldo Arenas, Jose Lezama Lima, Virgilio Pinera and others.
