Estimation of genetic progress from a breeding program and periodic evaluation of advancement in the genetic gain of a crop through released varieties is required to understand changes and success produced by past breeding activities. Since its inception Ethiopian Agricultural Research, Crop Research Sector in which field pea was included as one component of food legume improvement program has been working much on development of new technologies contributing to sustainable development. As a result, more than 30 field pea (Pisum sativum L.) improved varieties have been developed in Ethiopia, from 1979 to 2010. This work presents the impact of breeding field pea on seed yield, associated traits and their related changes in Ethiopia due to past pea breeding activities. The work also provides information on the potential for improvement of the crop and points out future directions for improvement of the crop.

The United Nations (UN) recently announced that the increase in chronic, non-communicable diseases has resulted in 36 million deaths around the world annually, claiming more lives than all other causes combined. These chronic diseases are not isolated to developed countries and are even more pronounced in the developing world. Such chronic illnesses have caused far more deaths than infectious diseases throughout the world (except Africa) in recent years. Therefore, enrichment of micronutrients in staple food crops is of paramount importance for the nutritional security in our world. Biofortification is the development of micronutrient- and/or vitamin-rich crops using traditional crop improvement practices as well as modern biotechnology tools. It is a more sustainable and cost effective method than food supplementation, fortification and diet diversification. This work consolidates available information on the different aspects of breeding for improved nutrition of pulses. An overview of entire pulses based on their nutritional profile is given so that audience can find the desired information easily. Food legumes are the active ingredients in many gluten-free food products and there is a continuous rise of the use of pulses flour in milling and baking processes. Our book sheds light on recent efforts and the underlying constraints of meeting the public demand. We believe this work provides the basic information for anyone interested in biofortification and stimulate further research to meet this unique challenge.

It has in fact been claimed with some justification that the Pyramids were built on faba beans! They are today a major crop in many countries such as China, Egypt and the Sudan; and are widely grown for human food throughout the Me~iterranean region, in Ethiopia and in parts of Latin America. In recent years there has been a growing interest in faba bean production as a protein source for stock feed in parts of Europe, North America and Aus· tralia. The publication served by this preface arose from the first International Faba Bean Con ference, held in Cairo, Egypt, on March 7-11, 1981 which provided a suitable forum for the review of many scientifically important aspects of the improvement of the crop. Leading faba bean specialists from four continents who participated were able not only to contri· bute from their personal expertise in relevant subjects, but in return to gain from their ex perience of Nile Valley conditions and from close contact with so many of the world's faba bean scientists. The conference was supported in the main by the ICARDAjIFAD Nile Valley Faba Bean Project. Additional support was received from a number of other organisations and institutions whose help is gladly acknowledged. These included the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) of the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture; G.T.Z. of Germany; IDRC of Canada; the National Research Center of Egypt; and Cairo University.

By selection of desirable parents and through hybridization between selected parents, there are chances to break the already existing plateau, and to obtain transgressive segregants in the future generations. Thus the present book deals to identify transgressive segregants, which would mainly depend upon the genetic parameters of various quantitative traits, their mutual associationship and their direct and indirect effects on yield.
