Book excerpt: Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) is a crop of small land holding farmers in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. It has a number of usages starting from protein rich food to vegetarian families; fuel wood; nitrogen supplier to soil; recycling minerals in soil to animal feed etc. Pigeonpea has been considered to be originated and domesticated in central India from where it travelled to different parts of the world such as Africa and Latin America. In ongoing scenario of climate change, biotic and especially abiotic stresses will make the conditions more challenging for entire agriculture. This volume focusing on the pigeonpea genome will collate the information on the genome sequencing and its utilization in genomics activities, with a focus on the current findings, advanced tools and strategies deployed in pigeonpea genome sequencing and analysis, and how this information is leading to direct outcomes for plant breeders and subsequently to farmers.

Book Genetic and Genomic Resources of Grain Legume Improvement

Download or read book Genetic and Genomic Resources of Grain Legume Improvement written by Hari D. Upadhyaya and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh) is an important grain legume crop grown in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Though pigeon pea has a narrow genetic base, vast genetic resources are available for its genetic improvement. Evaluation of small subsets, such as core (10% of the whole collection) and mini-core collections (about 1% of the entire collection), has resulted in the identification of promising diverse sources for agronomic and nutrition-related traits as well as resistance/tolerance to important biotic/abiotic stresses for use in pigeon pea improvement programmes. Wild relatives of pigeon pea are the reservoir of many useful genes, including resistance/tolerance to diseases, insect pests and drought and good agronomic traits, and also have contributed to the development of cytoplasmic male sterility systems for pigeon pea improvement. Availability of genomic resources, including the genome sequence, will facilitate greater use of germplasm to develop new cultivars with a broad genetic base.

Book Transcriptome Sequencing in Pigeonpea Cajanus Cajan L Millsp

Download or read book Transcriptome Sequencing in Pigeonpea Cajanus Cajan L Millsp written by Sutapa Dutta and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genomics research has great potential to revolutionize the discipline of plant breeding. Pigeonpea is an important grain legume mainly produced in semi-arid region, where it plays a crucial role in food and nutritional security of the people. It has the potential to be identified as an important food crop under changing climate. Pedigree and molecular diversity analysis in cultivars developed through classical breeding approaches indicated narrow genetic base in pigeonpea. Genetic and genomic improvement of pigeonpea is required to increase the productivity to meet the increasing food demand. Areas covered in this book include, construction and preparation for Expressed Sequence Tags library, sequencing by most traditional as well as next generation platform, assembling sequencing data, gene prediction, development of molecular markers (SSRs) and evaluation of this bio resources in biodiversity, phylogeny analysis across legume species. The book, therefore, should prove useful not only for students and teachers, but also for the young researchers starting their research career in the field of plant genomics.

Book Plant Breeding and Cultivar Development

Download or read book Plant Breeding and Cultivar Development written by D. P. Singh and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Breeding and Cultivar Development features an optimal balance between classical and modern tools and techniques related to plant breeding. Written for a global audience and based on the extensive international experience of the authors, the book features pertinent examples from major and minor world crops. Advanced data analytics (machine learning), phenomics and artificial intelligence are explored in the book's 28 chapters that cover classical and modern plant breeding. By presenting these advancements in specific detail, private and public sector breeding programs will learn about new, effective and efficient implementation. The insights are clear enough that non-plant breeding majoring students will find it useful to learn about the subject, while advanced level students and researchers and practitioners will find practical examples that help them implement their work. - Bridges the gap between conventional breeding practices and state-of-the-art technologies - Provides real-world case studies of a wide range of plant breeding techniques and practices - Combines insights from genetics, genomics, breeding science, statistics, computer science and engineering for crop improvement and cultivar development

Book Pulse Improvement

Download or read book Pulse Improvement written by Shabir Hussain Wani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in molecular biology and genome research in the form of molecular breeding and genetic engineering put forward innovative prospects for improving productivity of many pulses crops. Pathways have been discovered, which include regulatory elements that modulate stress responses (e.g., transcription factors and protein kinases) and functional genes, which guard the cells (e.g., enzymes for generating protective metabolites and proteins). In addition, numerous quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with elevated stress tolerance have been cloned, resulting in the detection of critical genes for stress tolerance. Together these networks can be used to enhance stress tolerance in pulses. This book summarizes recent advances in pulse research for increasing productivity, improving biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and enhancing nutritional quality.
