Book excerpt: Most analyses of gender in High Qing times have focused on literature and on the writings of the elite; this book broadens the scope of inquiry to include women's work in the farm household, courtesan entertainment, and women's participation in ritual observances and religion. In dealing with literature, it shows how women's poetry can serve the historian as well as the literary critic, drawing on one of the first anthologies of women's writing compiled by a woman to examine not only literary sensibilities and intimate emotions, but also political judgments, moral values, and social relations.

Download or read book Attention and Distraction in Modern German Literature Thought and Culture written by Carolin Duttlinger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention is fundamental to how we experience reality, and yet this notion has been understood and practised in very different ways across history. This interdisciplinary study explores the dynamic relationship between attention and its supposed opposite, distraction, as it unfolds from the eighteenth century to the present day. Its primary focus is on twentieth-century Germany and Austria, where matters of (in)attention gained a unique urgency during a period of social change and political crisis. Building on Enlightenment practices of self-observation, nineteenth-century Germany was the birthplace of experimental psychology, a discipline which sought to measure and potentially enhance human attention. This approach was also adopted outside the psychological laboratory—for instance in the First World War, when psychological testing was used to select soldiers for particular strategic positions. After the war these techniques filtered through into everyday life. Weimar Germany was unique in the western world in rolling out the methods of 'psychotechnics' across civilian society—in fields such as work and education, advertising and mass entertainment. This state-sponsored programme aimed to reshape people's minds and behaviour in order to build a more efficient, streamlined society. But as this study shows, this initiative also had profound repercussions in the fields of thought, literature, and culture. New readings of leading writers and intellectuals of the period—Kafka, Musil, Kracauer, Benjamin, and Adorno—are interspersed with broader cultural-historical chapters dedicated to the history of psychology and psychiatry, to Weimar self-help literature, portrait photography, and musical culture.
Download or read book The Revisionaries written by A. R. Moxon and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A modern-day classic."—Ron Charles, Washington Post “A spectacular invention.”—The New York Times "Compulsively readable."—NPR Things do not bode well for Father Julius. . . A street preacher decked out in denim robes and running shoes, Julius is a source of inspiration for a community that knows nothing of his scandalous origins. But when a nearby mental hospital releases its patients to run amok in his neighborhood, his trusted if bedraggled flock turns expectantly to Julius to find out what’s going on. Amid the descending chaos, Julius encounters a hospital escapee who babbles prophecies of doom, and the growing palpable sense of impending danger intensifies . . . as does the feeling that everyone may be relying on a street preacher just a little too much. Still, Julius decides he must confront the forces that threaten his congregation—including the peculiar followers of a religious cult, the mysterious men and women dressed all in red seen fleetingly amid the bedlam, and an enigmatic smoking figure who seems to know what’s going to happen just before it does. The Revisionaries is a wildly imaginative, masterfully rendered, and suspenseful tale that conjures the bold outlandish stylishness of Thomas Pynchon, Margaret Atwood, and Alan Moore—while being unlike anything that’s come before.

Such as the realization of hearing the sound of nothing amongst the giants of Norway, or falling asleep to the singing of Maori in New Zealand nor (especially nice for a truck driver like me) sitting 10,000 feet up in the Sierra Nevada's early in the morning drinking my coffee without the sight of a single person or vehicle, although this was the case during most of my wilderness trips. Download or read book The Root of the Righteous Sea Harp Timeless series written by A.W. Tozer and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What a man is must be shown to be more important than what he does." In the Church today, there is a great emphasis on results, influence, impact, words, and actions. However, these outward manifestations of righteousness are meant to be the product of a heart deeply rooted in the love of Jesus Christ. In this prescient and wisdom-rich book, The Root of the Righteous, A.W. Tozer urges believers to fix their gaze—not on visible fruit—but on Jesus Himself, to focus their efforts on planting deep roots in Him. With a true devotion to knowing Christ Jesus, to following Him, to walking in His ways, the highly-valued fruit is simply and inevitably a product of communion with His all-powerful, ever-loving presence. A.W. Tozer (1897-1963) was an influential voice in evangelical American Christianity. As a pastor and an author, he challenged the hearts and minds of believers with his fierce intellect and heartfelt invitations, always with one goal in mind: that people would come to know God deeply, intimately, and truly. In The Root of the Righteous, Tozer's ferocity and passion shine through, as he calls readers into deeper union with Jesus and ultimately into the true life of the Church. In this compilation of short meditations, Tozer reveals that in order to plant immovable roots in Jesus, the Christian must: Listen to God Receive His counsel Enjoy His presence Know Scripture Be inspired by the Spirit Commit whole-heartedly Refuse complacency Tozer says, “The message 'Christ in you, the hope of glory’ (Colossians 1:27) needs to be restored to the Church.” This is the central decree of The Root of the Righteous: that the abiding presence of Jesus, through the gift of the Holy Spirit, in the hearts of believers is indeed the hope of the world. Through true intimacy with Christ, real, lasting fruit flourishes—righteousness flourishes—the very fruit that the world longs for.

Through the diary, Jefferson tells Goose about his true love, Calvin, who was a former slave who fought for the Union. With no record of Calvin’s death or service found, Goose figures Jefferson might not want to cross over until Calvin receives due recognition. Jefferson also speaks of an acorn planted as a sign of commitment to their future. When reenactment leader Patrick O’Hanlon calls looking for the diary, he tells Goose about his plans to return down south to protest the chopping down of an old oak tree. Is this the tree that grew from Calvin and Jefferson’s acorn? Goose, with Jefferson in tow, decides to go with Patrick to find out. What happens between the four men once there is a lesson in healing and love.
