Book Symposium on Development of Upper Respiratory Anatomy and Function

Download or read book Symposium on Development of Upper Respiratory Anatomy and Function written by James F. Bosma and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Symposium resulted from a linkage of interests of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Institute of Dental Research, and the Fogarty International Center. The Perinatal Biology and Infant Mortality Program of the NICHD sponsors investigations of pregnancy, maternal health, intrauterine growth and infant development. A major role is in the instigation and the support of research pertinent to the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The NIDR Section on Oral and Pharyngeal Development studies the infant performances of feeding, vocalization, and positioning, relating these to changes in local sensory resources. The FIC, through its Conference and Seminar Program, furthers international research pertinent to medicine. This conference of developmental anatomists and physiologists with clinicians concerned with the developmentally calendared entity of SIDS resulted in a productive and provocative exchange. We learned from each other and with each other. This volume is composed of chapters which were prepared after the conference, based in varying degree on the typescript of the spoken presentations. The questions and comments of the discussions were edited by the contributors and the responses by the chapter authors.

This book helps the practis

Book Physical Work and Effort

Download or read book Physical Work and Effort written by Gunnar Borg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Work and Effort is a collection of papers presented at the Proceedings of the First International Symposium held at Stockholm on December 2-4, 1975. This book deals with the investigations done on the clinical physiology of work and effort. This text discusses interdisciplinary measures conducted by psychologists and physiologists on both theoretical and clinical issues. Part 1 discusses basic theories; methods and results that can be found in studies relating to fatigue; visual perception; and stress that includes a simple method of rating these estimates of perceptions. Part 2 evaluates differential and developmental problems such as sex, heart rates, and the differences found in aerobic function related to childhood daily physical activities. Part 3 covers topics on clinical and applied studies such as ECG changes in asymptomatic men; perceived pain during tread-mill exercise; and changes in heart rate during work exertion or when driving under traffic conditions. Part 4 evaluates the psychophysiological intercorrelations from a series of experiments and concludes that two factors are present in the perception of exertion during physical work—the local factor and a central factor. The book also includes the use of a model to evaluate the perceived ratings of these two factors. Psychologists, physiologists, physical therapists, physiotherapists, and scientists involved in work improvement will find this book very valuable.

Book Respiratory Physiology

    Book Details:
  • Author : John B West
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2013-05-27
  • ISBN : 1461475201
  • Pages : 434 pages

Download or read book Respiratory Physiology written by John B West and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-05-27 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Present-day respiratory physiology stems largely from the explosion of ideas which took place during and after World War II. A number of the major players are still active, but the opportunity to prepare a personal history of this branch of medicine will soon be lost. In a sense then, this book offers an exceptional, even unique, opportunity. We are offered a first-hand chronicle of the advancements made in respiratory physiology in the course of this century by one of the principal figures in the field. The volume covers every aspect of the evolution of this important area of knowledge: morphology, gas exchange and blood flow, mechanics, control of ventillation, and comparative physiology. Some of the chapters are personal accounts of the development of respiratory physiology as observed by the author. It is hoped that what is lost in objectivity by this approach is more than made up by the captivating insights provided by the author into the process of scientific research and discovery.

Book Frontiers in Modeling and Control of Breathing

Download or read book Frontiers in Modeling and Control of Breathing written by Chi-Sang Poon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of neural control of breathing has advanced rapidly in the past two decades, with the emergence of many new and promising research directions of increasing sophistication. The complexity and diversity of the current methodologies signify its remarkable vivacity, albeit at the price of much confusion. Captured in this book are the broad and intricate nature of the field and its multifaceted frontiers, including aspects of genetics, cell and molecular biology, comparative biology, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, neuroanatomy, imaging, human physiology in health and disease, and influence of environmental factors. Major topics include chemosensitivity, respiratory sensation, respiratory neurons, rhythmogenesis, plasticity, development, chemoreflex and exercise, respiratory instability and variability with behavioral and sleep states, etc., which are systematically laid out in the book for easy referencing.

Book Clinical Physiology of Sleep

Download or read book Clinical Physiology of Sleep written by Ralph Lydic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-05-27 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ROBERT WILLIAM McCARLEY Laboratory of Neuroscience, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Boston, and Brockton V A Medical Center, Brockton, Massachusetts The alternation of waking and sleeping, the daily course of the ad vancing and receding tides of consciousness, has long been a familiar part of our experience. But it is a new idea that autonomic and respiratory phys iology are equally and dramatically altered in a parallel fashion, and it is this concept that is summarized and developed here. The editors have drawn together thematically related chapters written by researchers with direct experience and a high level of expertise in the areas they address. The main theme is the relationship of general physiological alterations during sleep to cellular physiology and to the pathology of sleep. What is distinctive and especially appealing about this book on sleep is its emphasis on the autonomic and respiratory systems. This volume is, I believe, the first to explore these topics systematically and to blend phe nomenological description with possible cellular mechanisms and ties to clinical pathology. As such, this book should find an important place in the library of workers in the fields of sleep research, autonomic and respiratory physiology, and related neuroscience disciplines; it also belongs in the li brary of clinicians concerned with the disorders of sleep. This overview of topics and chapters gives an indication of their cath olicity.

Book The Brain Masters of Vienna

Download or read book The Brain Masters of Vienna written by Lazaros C. Triarhou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book comprises biographical notes, of about 1000 words each, with a portrait photo, of 90 influential figures of the famous prewar Viennese school of neuropsychiatry, appearing together for the first time in a single volume. The entries focus on the academic lives and scientific contributions of pioneers in the neurological sciences viewed from a modern perspective. These updated profiles are based on substantial new research. The book includes a wide range of people, some famous Nobel laureates, and others less well known, from the era when Vienna was the epicenter of brain research. Despite the tragic circumstances of two World Wars, these pioneers remained resilient, willing to help others with an admirable dignity against adversity that leaves an indelible lesson to the later generations. Some fell victim of the Holocaust. Others overcame the constraints of National Socialism and ultimately settled overseas to nurture their ambitions and pursue their intellectual goals as physicians, researchers, and teachers. The monograph is a useful source for scholars interested in the evolution of ideas in basic neuroscience, clinical neurology, and neuropsychiatry, and the investigators who effected them.
