Book Breaking the Stony Silence

Download or read book Breaking the Stony Silence written by Ian Brooks and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 1989 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reminder for those who need it, that lithic studies are alive and well beyond the flint-rich lowland zone of England. Nine papers resulting from the 1988 Sheffield Lithics Conference illustrate some of the range of approaches to lithic analysis currently in use in a loosely defined northeast Midlands. Only occasionally straining for theoretical trendiness, the collection covers aspects of acquisition and deposition and summarizes the results of microfossil and blood residue analyses. An interesting complement to its southern cousin out of the Reading stable (`Lithic Analysis and Later British Prehistory' BAR 162, 1987).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Open Access edition will be available on publication. The murder of George Floyd in 2020, the renewed international take up of the cry Black Lives Matter and the subsequent toppling of a statue commemorating slave-merchant-turned-philanthropist Edward Colston in Bristol provoked urgent questions on memorialisation, white privilege, social justice and repair. Debates on how legacies of colonialism and empire in Britain should be addressed spilled out of the scholarly world into the public discourse. In the immediate wake of the statue toppling this book offers a unique, distinctive and timely contribution to those debates: a series of voices and experiences are offered as critical commentaries and accounts of recent interventions on an official heritage narrative. It sets out to break the ‘dead silence’, by bringing together diverse perspectives from academics, artists, activists, heritage professionals and tourist guides. The book offers fresh insights, referencing work attending to the impacts and legacies of colonisation primarily in Bath and Bristol, augmented with comparative contributions from Lancaster and Mexico offering significant and pertinent resonances. A range of strategies are explored towards enabling silenced voices to be heard and engage in conversations about how the past is represented, including Co-Creation, new agonistic museum practices, innovative creative and somatic approaches.

Book excerpt: Pearl Harbor and the tentacles of Word War II turn San Francisco into a raucous, electrifying city. Twenty-year-old Carmel St. John moves into this maelstrom with dreams of winning the heart of Dr. Phillip Barron and becoming a big band singer. There, Carmel meets Caesar Almalto, a black-market kingpin, and Jerry Cassidy, a musician who helps her and hopes to win her love. Nightclub life, lust, and murder swirl around her, as does her tenuous relationship with Phillip, who leaves as a commissioned officer aboard the first hospital ship in the Pacific theater. A family crisis threatens to destroy Carmel's dreams when she is called home to San Jose to manage the family's 1,100-acre ranch during the war. The Stone Must Break tells the saga of two families, the St. Johns and the Barrons, as they grapple with tragedy, love, and responsibility in a world at war.

Book Break Of Dark

Download or read book Break Of Dark written by Robert Westall and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a barrier that divides the dark unknown from the everyday world around us? If so, is it broken sometimes by the dead returning, by the undead, or by alien creatures? What else could account for the chance meeting (or was it?) between a young student and hitch-hiker who turns out to be so much stranger than she seems? Why else should three successive crews flying a Second World War bomber - Blackham's Wimpey - be driven to madness, despair, even to death, though the plane returns from each mission without a scratch? Who are Fred, Alice and Aunty Lou; the figments of Peter's imagination that become a real life nightmare for Roger and Biddy? There is St Austin Friars, too: a church without a congregation - until a burial service, oddly arranged a month ahead, is attended by a sinister assortment of the living and the dead. And Sergeant Nice, an ordinary policeman in an ordinary seaside town faced with a series of quite extraordinary thefts; the work surely, of no human hand. Chilling, but often humorous as well, these stories creep up on you and take you by surprise.

Robbie, who bonds with George right away, has witnessed an unspeakable tragedy, but that is just the beginning of the trouble. Book excerpt: This is the second book in the continuing saga of the Baird family, following the ebbs and flows of its fortunes through the fears and uncertainties of the interwar years. The Great War is over, but peace brings little respite to the ongoing enmity felt by the protagonist, Iain Baird, towards his younger brother. He is determined to establish a relationship with his biological son, Eddie: the rest of the family, led by Eddie’s formidable grandmother, are resolved to prevent this at any cost. Set mainly in Scotland, the story alternates between Glasgow and Edinburgh, against a backdrop of industrial unrest and the threat of radical socialism in the 1920s, followed by the darkening clouds of fascism, fellow travellers and appeasement in the 1930s. Iain is heavily involved in the twists and turns of extremist politics, first in the fledgling Communist Party, then in the Independent Labour Party, before being induced to act as a double agent for Mosley's British Union of Fascists. He must steer a tricky path, serving two masters, playing off one against the other, if he is to achieve the status and recognition he craves.

Book Dovey Undaunted A Black Woman Breaks Barriers in the Law the Military and the Ministry

Download or read book Dovey Undaunted A Black Woman Breaks Barriers in the Law the Military and the Ministry written by Tonya Bolden and published by WW Norton. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coretta Scott King Honor–winning author Tonya Bolden chronicles the life of an intrepid lawyer and civil rights pioneer. Dovey Johnson Roundtree was most famous for her successful defense of an indigent Black man accused of the murder of Mary Pinchot Meyer, a prominent white Washington, DC, socialite, in 1965. Despite her triumph in this high-profile case, Roundtree continued to represent the poor and the underserved. She was the first lawyer to bring a bus desegregation case before the Interstate Commerce Commission, clinching the ruling that enabled Robert F. Kennedy to enforce bus integration. She was also among the first Black women to enter the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, and was one of the first ordained female ministers in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Tracing Roundtree’s life from her childhood in Jim Crow North Carolina through her adulthood, Tonya Bolden illuminates a little-known figure in American history who believed the law should serve the people, and places her firmly in the context of twentieth-century civil rights and African American culture.

Download or read book Layers upon Layers written by Smaranda Kafka and published by ePublishers & Editura Coresi. This book was released on with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Author’s Words: Translating a literary world is rewriting it, and that is a tormenting job. But still you don’t want to ask any other person to do it. It’s yours, and you don’t give it away, even to a friend. You may listen to him, and after that, you’ll do it the way you feel is right for you. The translation of the Romanian book ‘Alb și Negru, la voia destinului’ marks its own rebirth into another form of expression, in the book ‘Layers upon Layers’; as the saying goes, they are brothers, but siblings, not twins. This book follows the same narrative as the first one, and while it keeps the spirit of the original work, it has its own soul manifesting through a series of subsequent changes while remaining obedient to the writer’s perception of the reality the characters lived in. And even though the book ‘Layers upon Layers’ brings out the same memories, sounds, colours, imagines and facts as the Romanian version, it still sounds and feels differently. That’s the way I see this new book, as an interpretation, not a translation; and I love it. Hopefully, you love it too. Smaranda Kafka
