Book Urban Policy and Economic Development

Download or read book Urban Policy and Economic Development written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid demographic growth will add 600 million people to cities and towns in developing countries during the 1990s, about two-thirds of the expected total population increase. Of the world's 21 megacities, which will expand to have more than 10 million people, 17 will be in developing countries. With urban economic activities making up an increasing share of GDP in all countries, the productivity of the urban economy will heavily influence economic growth. This paper analyzes the fiscal, financial, and real sector linkages between urban economic activities andmacroeconomic performance. It builds on this analysis to propose a policy framework and strategy that willredefine the urban challenge in developing countries. ISBN10: 0-8213-1816-0 ISBN13: 978-0-8213-1816-4

Book Finance Development March 1988

Download or read book Finance Development March 1988 written by International Monetary Fund. External Relations Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1988-03-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the policy implications of structural changes in financial markets. Domestic financial markets have become less segmented, and the major financial centers more integrated. At the same time, the structural changes in financial markets have improved efficiency by lowering intermediation costs, increasing the ability to hedge financial risks associated with currency, interest rate, and price volatility and opening up access to new sources of savings. The widespread application of computer and telecommunications technology to financial markets has permitted markets to process a significantly larger volume of transactions.

This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Bank remains one of the most prominent actors in the field of global development, and one of the foremost international organisations in contemporary global politics. Through this book, Liam Clegg explores the drivers of World Bank operational practices, and the contribution of these operations to state transformations across the global South.

Book Research Tracks in Urbanism Dynamics Planning and Design in Contemporary Urban Territories

Download or read book Research Tracks in Urbanism Dynamics Planning and Design in Contemporary Urban Territories written by Alessia Allegri and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maybe the Global Village metaphor has never been more accurate than it is today, where societies join forces in the fight against the COVID 19 pandemic, in a global coordinated effort, possibly never tested before in the known history of Humankind. Although we are sure that in the past some other shared demands have united the different peoples of the world, this has never been so strongly necessary, mainly in what the global scientific community is concerned. This is a fight for the survival of a society. However, we should not lose sight of what we are fighting for. We fight together for people. Not just for the abstract value of Human life, but for life in society as a whole, including its moral and ethical aspects. The topics of this book are based on this claim, on what makes it possible. We do not build our lives in a vacuum, or in distant Invisible Cities, but through a higher value, which represents physical life in society: the City, built by the discipline of Urbanism. This book is a spin-off of the International Research Seminar on Urbanism_SIIU2020. Inspired by the contents of twelve research seminars, a group of researchers from the universities of Barcelona, Lisbon and São Paulo discuss the contemporary agenda of research in Urbanism. Following the conference, a selection of 35 original double-blind peer-reviewed research papers were brought together with different perspectives about such an agenda.

Book Rights of Way to Bras lia Teimosa

Download or read book Rights of Way to Bras lia Teimosa written by Charles J. Fortin and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The site of Recife's Brasília Teimosa favela emerged as a flash point of economic and political interests in the 1930s and the scene of subsequent strife into the 1980s. The name of this district is a contemptuous allusion to the new capital of Brazil, with its forward-thinking planning policies and urban design, in stark contrast to the favela. This concise account unearths events surfacing through periods of revolution, dictatorship, populism, Cuban Communism, the 1964 military coup d'etat and crackdown to the amplified reverberation of civil society voices and engagement decades later. Shifting ideologies and jolting transitions between regimes directly affected what occurred on this 110-acre parcel of urban land. Between 1934 and 1984 competing groups and individuals came to covet this space because of its strategic location and political consequence. Brasília Teimosa is about the politics of ouster and the power of resistance. What took place there still resonates in squatter settlements throughout Brazil; deplorable living conditions prevalent in favelas are the result of deprivation of access to market resources. This work examines the interactions between the state and neighbourhood associations regarding the allocation of public goods and services in the context of urban resources and their system of supply. In particular it focuses on the political struggles of shanty residents of Brasília Teimosa that are pertinent to the provision of and access to urban land tenure. Control and use of public lands have functioned as instruments of the state to pursue political projects in coalition with private real estate partners, to undermine the strength of opposing factions, or to seal populist pacts with the urban poor who, as illegal occupants of public land, are locked into a dependency relationship with the state. As will be shown, the residents of Brasília Teimosa discovered and exploited "space" for political manoeuvres in order to secure permanence on a centrally located, publicly-owned site.
