The physical, mental and sexual abuse of women. The assigned marriage of young girls to senior men. The uncontrolled health issues brought about by intermarriage and incest. The excommunicated boys forced to fend for themselves. And the continuing efforts to liberate those still trapped within it. Jenny tells the things kept secret within the FLDS. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many of our efforts to save the environment are effective? Learn how our system is simply masking the symptoms of global warming. Climate change is more than just a buzzword. It is a reality that society and industry have failed to deal with effectively. "Greenwashing," a term that author Bruce E. Johansen defines as the "environmental sleight of hand" performed by technology and advertising, has us convinced that certain "green" practices are sustainable. In his book, Johansen examines the sanctioned activities and practices commonly touted as environmentally responsible and points out their failings. He explains why the global climate change problem is more urgent than many people think, and provides real-world examples of companies that are taking measures with genuine benefits to the environment. Presenting information relevant to every inhabitant of earth and that environmentalists, climate scientists, and students and educators in environmental studies will find essential reading, this book brings questions about legislation and economics to the forefront and asks whether today's system can support a true effort at sustainable living. It presents honest—and what some readers may find surprising—answers to inquiries into what is really "good for the environment," such as why corn ethanol may be worse for the atmosphere than oil and why coal capture and sequestration may be the worst "green" idea yet.

Book Modern Polygamy and Mormon Fundamentalism

Download or read book Modern Polygamy and Mormon Fundamentalism written by Brian C. Hales and published by Greg Kofford Books. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2007 Best Book Award, John Whitmer Historical Association Under the subject of alternative lifestyles, the issue of polygamous relationships falls squarely in the middle of the debate. Polygamous marriages are a common practice in many other countries, but the United States has vehemently opposed such unions and will no doubt find itself disputing its position on them again in the near future. As with the same-sex marriage issue, a firestorm of controversy surrounds the question since the right to participate in a polygamous union is very much tied to the right to live out one’s preferences, religious or not. Detailed accounts of sexual abuse and child brides are frequently leaked from the various polygamous societies, notwithstanding their extreme efforts to remain under the radar of law enforcement and the press. A by-product of these mysterious societies is that public interest is vitalized by their continuous efforts to gain independence from traditionalist culture. This fascinating study seeks to trace the historical tapestry that is early Mormon polygamy, details the official discontinuation of the practice by the Church, and, for the first time, describes the many zeal-driven organizations that arose in the wake of that decision. Among the polygamous groups discussed are the LeBaronites, whose “blood atonement” killings sent fear throughout Mormon communities in the late seventies and the eighties; the FLDS Church, which made news recently over its construction of a compound and temple in Texas and Warren Jeffs' arrest and conviction; and the Allred and Kingston groups, two major factions with substantial membership statistics both in and out of the United States. All these fascinating histories, along with those of the smaller independent groups, are examined and explained in a way that all can appreciate.

Book The Metarevolution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Grant Bartley
  • Publisher : Punked Books
  • Release : 2009

  • Pages : 231 pages

Download or read book The Metarevolution written by Grant Bartley and published by Punked Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Metarevolution is a revolutionary manifesto about revolutions. It is both a theory about the nature of change throughout history, and a prescription of what to do about it. The touchstone idea for The Metarevolution is that no matter how well thought-out any ideology may be to start with, there are always limitations which only become clear as its ideals are applied. History shows that radical changes too often lead to disaster or to corruption as these limitations are revealed, or as thinking stagnates when it needs to change. How can we overcome these limitations for present and future revolutions? And how can we overcome the failure to ultimately progress which this basic cycle of history demonstrates? By looking at the 'hypothetical' example of a coming global ecological revolution, and many examples from history, The Metarevolution analyses what goes wrong with cultures in following their ideals, and reveals the metarevolutionary response. This is to create a subculture which pursues an on-going deep critique of ideology, the aim of which is for humanity to continually evolve its ideals. In following this metarevolutionary programme we will continually redirect ourselves towards the best world we can create for ourselves. So a metarevolution is the most intelligent thing the human race can do for itself... and The Metarevolution needs you.

Book excerpt: The phenomena and events which occur (incessantly) in Nature are countless. But on careful observation, we can notice that some forms of common threads run across different platforms or fields. These fascinating parallels can be found amidst the world of human affairs also, apart from the natural, scientific laws and theories. Look at how a very large unit (or organization, or organism, or machine) is very conveniently and smartly assembled out of many smaller units. The beauty is that the smaller constituent units work independently and at the same time are also a part of the whole. Take human individuals, and as a parallel (the theme of this book) the physical house in which they dwell. Individuals come together and make families. Families live together and make groups or organizations or societies. They, in turn, combine and grow into states; states join up and become a nation. All nations, of course, make up the world–whether they like it or not! Physical, purely material entities like houses and possessions run in a parallel stream with those of human ideologies. The same method is employed by Nature in building its vast empire. Fundamental particles join and exist together to make up atoms. Atoms join and make up molecules. Out of the molecules, all of planet Earth is made. Planets and a star join and make a solar system. Millions of them combine and make a galaxy. Billions and trillions of them make a universe – like ours. There are innumerable such examples in the world we live in. Go ahead and begin to turn the pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Friendly Stranger Dalton Henson, an athletic but emotionally disturbed youth living in a small central Florida town, suddenly becomes sexually attracted to prepubescent boys. This attraction gradually intensifies until it nearly completely replaces the attraction he previously felt toward girls and women. As the years go by, he is extremely ashamed of being a “sex pervert” (as he thinks of himself ), and constantly strives to conceal “the way he is” from people he is associating with. This is complicated because he blushes easily and is inclined to do so anytime someone mentions anything pertaining to sex. Despite his sexual attraction, he conceives that sexually molesting a boy would be morally wrong, and he never does so or considers doing so. This book follows Dalton Henson through college, a year of teaching physical education and coaching athletics at a junior high school, a summer as a camp counselor, two years in the U.S. Army—including a year in Vietnam—and the year after he is discharged from the Army, as he lives in a low-grade motel room in Tampa, writing a novel and interacting with a variety of motel staff and guests, ____________________________ Lead Me, My shepherd This is the third novel of a trilogy by John Veteran with the character Dalton Henson, a celibate non-offending pedophile, as the protagonist.
