Download or read book Brain of the Firm written by Stafford Beer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1995-06-08 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stafford Beer is undoubtedly among the world's most provocative, creative, and profound thinkers on the subject of management, and he records his thinking with a flair that is unmatched. His writing is as much art as it is science. He is the most viable system I know." —Dr Russell L Ackoff, The Institute for Interactive Management, Pennsylvania, USA "If ... anyone can make it [Operations Research] understandably readable and positively interesting it is Stafford Beer . everyone in management ... should be grateful to him for using clear and at times elegant English and ... even elegant diagrams." —The Economist This is the second edition of a book which has already become a management 'standard' both in universities and on the bookshelves of managers and their advisers. Brain of the Firm develops an account of the firm based upon insights derived from the study of the human nervous system, and is a basic text from the author's theory of viable systems. Despite the neurophysiology, the book is written for managers to understand. The companion volume to this book is The Heart of Enterprise, which is intended to support and complement this text. "Stafford Beer's works represent required reading for everyone who believes that a capacity for rigorous thinking is an essential attribute of today's successful managers and administrators. Brain of the Firm shows a first-rate intellect at work and provides concepts, models and inspiration for both practitioners and teachers." —Sir Douglas Hague, CBE
Download or read book The Cartographic Atlas of the Brain written by Paulo Abdo do Seixo Kadri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-23 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroanatomy is considered one of the most complex subjects in the field of anatomy. The reliable literature for students is limited to classical anatomical books, many of them re-editions of publications from the previous century, with black-and-white illustrations or computer-generated images. In this sense, the literature lacks a neuroanatomical atlas depicting the brain's surface anatomy and intrinsic anatomy with actual anatomical preparations. This illustrated and concise book is designed to fill the gap by providing high-quality photographs of actual anatomical preparations of the entire central nervous system. It is organized into eight chapters and presents high-definition photographs of thoroughly labeled anatomical preparations. The Cartographic Atlas of the Brain is intended to benefit medical students, residents and practitioners of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroanatomy, Radiology, Neurobiology and other branches of the Neurosciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By J OHN A. HRONES Provost, Case Institute 0/ Technology SYSTEMS have been the subject of man's study for many hundreds of years. Thus, the solar system has been the concern of the astronomer. The study of the allocation of material and human resources within the boundaries of an industrial firm or a government has been the concern of the economist. The subject of such studies have been widely known as economic systems. Medieal men have worked with the human body. Thus, man has attempted to deal with a complicated array of interconnected elements since the very earliest of recorded time. In his attcmpt to improve his understanding of physieal systems the need to concentrate on a specific kind of system, e.g., the solar system. the human body, became more imperative. However in recent years there has begun to grow and develop an increasing number of people who are working on thc development of general systems theory and analysis. Such a development is based upon the belief that certain view points, certain kinds of mathematics and technologieal procedures can be applied to a wide variety of important systems with considerable profit. The pres sures for the development of such a body of knowledge grew with the de velopment of a technologieal socicty.

Download or read book A Glossary of Anesthesia and Related Terminology written by Sanford L. Klein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this text catches the specialty of anesthesia at what will probably prove to be the apex of its influence and recognition amongst the specialties of medicine. The scientific basis of the specialty is becoming increasingly well delineated. Anesthesiologists have established themselves in local, regional, and national forums as spokespersons not only for the specialty, but also for medicine in general. And the specialty at last may be emerging from the stereotype of a faceless, inarticulate, shy and retiring figure, whose outstanding characteristic was the cloying odor of diethel ether! Technology has moved into the specialty on seven league boots. Just as an example, the basic design of the anesthesia machine was stable between the early 1950s and certainly the late 1970s. Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, our anesthesia machines are becoming intelligent, are utilizing heads-up displays, and are becoming more and more capable of writing the anesthesia record. Monitoring standards for anesthesia have burgeoned to the point that almost every aspect of the specialty is impinged upon by some rule and some "thou will or thou will not. " The importation and creation of terminology is exploding. In fact, one of the problems in updating this book was deciding when to stop. The author hopes that the goal of creating a snapshot in time through definitions of commonly used words and phrases has been achieved.
