Numerous methods examining different aspects of brain functions have been developed and employed. To study systemic interactions brain networks in vivo, non-invasive methods such as electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have been used with great success. However, each of these methods can map only certain, quite selective aspects of brain function while missing others; and the inferences on neuronal processes and information flow are often rather indirect. To overcome these shortcomings of single methods, researchers have attempted to combine methods in order to make optimal use of their advantages while compensating their disadvantages. Hence, it is not surprising that soon after the introduction of fMRI as a neuroimaging method the possibilities of combinations with EEG have been explored. This book is intended to aid researchers who plan to set up a simultaneous EEG-fMRI laboratory and those who are interested in integrating electrophysiological and hemodynamic data. As will be obvious from the different chapters, this is a dynamically developing field in which several approaches are being tested, validated and compared. Currently, there is no one best solution for all problems available, but many promising techniques are emerging. This book shall give a comprehensive overview of these techniques. In addition, it points to open questions and directions for future research.

This research topic is focused on the computational modeling of visual cognition, body sense, motor control and their integrations. Firstly, the modeling and simulation of vision and body sense are achieved by 1) understanding neural mechanism underlying sensory perception and cognition, and 2) mimicking accordingly the structures and mechanisms of their signal propagation pathways. The achievement of this procedure could provide neural findings for better encoding and decoding visual and somatosensory perception of humans, and help robots or systems build humanoid robust vision, body sensing, and various emotions. Secondly, the modeling and simulation of the motor system of the primate are achieved by mimicking the coordination of bones, muscles and joints and the control mechanisms of the neural system in the brain and spinal cord. This procedure could help robots achieve fast, robust and accurate manipulations and be used for safe human-computer interaction. Finally, by integrating them, more complete and intelligent systems/robots could be built to accomplish various tasks self-adaptively and automatically.

Recent advances in combining two imaging modalities - magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) - into one integrated scanner, have created the opportunity to explore the underlying neurochemistry of brain function in more detail. Imaging these dynamics plays an important role for understanding drug action and function of neurochemical pathways in the brain and is crucial, yet largely unexplored, for creating and evaluating treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. In this thesis, we first address technological challenges in simultaneous PET/MRI by designing, building and evaluating PET compatible MR probes for brain imaging, which enable highly sensitive dual modality imaging. We then develop simultaneous imaging methods with PET and functional MRI to assess and validate relationships between receptor occupancy and changes in brain activity due to pharmacological challenges targeting the dopamine system. Our results indicate that dopamine receptor occupancies and vascular responses are correlated in anatomical space and with pharmacological dose. Moreover, the temporal dynamics of the signals show that a direct neurovascular coupling between receptor occupancy and hemodynamics exists and that a temporal divergence between PET and fMRI can be used to investigate previously unexplored neurochemical parameters and adaptation mechanisms in vivo. Overall, our findings provide insight into dopaminergic receptor dynamics and their effects on high-level brain function, paving a way to address receptor-specific brain dysfunction effectively.
