Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain Energy Metabolism addresses its challenging subject by presenting diverse technologies allowing for the investigation of brain energy metabolism on different levels of complexity. Model systems are discussed, starting from the reductionist approach like primary cell cultures which allow assessing of the properties and functions of a single brain cell type with many different types of analysis, however, at the expense of neglecting the interaction between cell types in the brain. On the other end, analysis in animals and humans in vivo is discussed, maintaining the full complexity of the tissue and the organism but making high demands on the methods of analysis. Written for the popular Neuromethods series, chapters include the kind of detailed description and key implementation advice that aims to support reproducible results in the lab. Meticulous and authoritative, Brain Energy Metabolism provides an ideal guide for researchers interested in brain energy metabolism with the hope of stimulating more research in this exciting and very important field.

Book The Metabolic Inflammatory Axis in Brain Aging and Neurodegeneration

Download or read book The Metabolic Inflammatory Axis in Brain Aging and Neurodegeneration written by Fei Yin and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-08-16 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impairment of energy metabolism is a hallmark of brain aging and several neurodegenerative diseases, such as the Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Age- and disease-related hypometabolism is commonly associated with oxidative stress and they are both regarded as major contributors to the decline in synaptic plasticity and cognition. Neuroinflammatory changes, entailing microglial activation and elevated expression of inflammatory cytokines, also correlate with age-related cognitive decline. It is still under debate whether the mitochondrial dysfunction-induced metabolic deficits or the microglia activation-mediated neuroinflammation is the initiator of the cognitive changes in aging and AD. Nevertheless, multiple lines of evidence support the notion that mitochondrial dysfunction and chronic inflammation exacerbate each other, and these mechanistic diversities have cellular redox dysregulation as a common denominator. This research topic focuses on the role of a metabolic-inflammatory axis encompassing the bioenergetic activity, brain inflammatory responses and their redox regulation in healthy brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Dynamic interactions among these systems are reviewed in terms of their causative or in-tandem occurrence and how the systemic environment, –e.g., insulin resistance, diabetes, and systemic inflammation–, impacts on brain function.

Download or read book Brain Energy Metabolism written by John Edmond and published by S Karger Ag. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authored by internationally recognized scientists, this special issue of Developmental Neuroscience presents selected papers from the Second International Meeting on Brain Energy Metabolism held at Blaubeuren, Germany, in 1995. It expands the research focus dealing with functional aspects of energy metabolism in neural tissue that was presented at the first meeting at Carcassonne in 1993. New evidence is presented on the complexity and importance of the continuous dynamic trafficking of key substances between astrocytes and neurons, all promoting significant roles for the astroglial cell population in the metabolic integrity of neural tissue. The latest studies shed new light on current issues of neural amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism. Papers deal with metabolic mechanisms for cellular responses to stress and damage from a variety of insults, and develop insights on the interrelationships and interdependence of the different neural cell populations. This up-to-date publication incorporates a wealth of knowledge and points to new directions in research which are of significance to a broad spectrum of developmental neuroscientists as well as to researchers in physiology, biochemistry and nutrition with an interest in brain energy metabolism.

Book Brain Glycogen Metabolism

Download or read book Brain Glycogen Metabolism written by Mauro DiNuzzo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide a state-of-the-art summary of what is currently known about brain glycogen metabolism, detailing the recent advances in our understanding of why glycogen is so critical for normal brain function. The role of glycogen in cellular neurophysiology remains largely unclear and its specific contribution to the energy demand of brain cells is still elusive.Glycogen is the sole cerebral glucose reserve and is emerging as a fundamental component of brain energy metabolism. Pharmacological or genetic manipulation of glycogen metabolism in the brain impairs memory formation and increases susceptibility to epileptic seizures and cortical spreading depression. Glycogen is also directly implicated in abnormal neuronal excitability and mental retardation that characterize brain disorders like Lafora disease and Pompe disease.

Book Metabolic Reactions in the Nervous System

Download or read book Metabolic Reactions in the Nervous System written by Abel Lajtha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the projected volumes of the Handbook are completed, most of our current knowledge of the biochemistry of nervous systems will have been touched upon. A number of the chapters will have dealt with the correlations of the biochemical findings with morphological and physio logical parameters as well. Considering the abysmal lack of such attempts, even in the recent past, this is a sign of great progress. If the reader's eventual goal is to derive the "laws" that relate various aspects of animal and human behavior to underlying physiological and biochemical function, these admirable volumes will help him to establish a firm biochemical base from which to operate. It is certain that the future approaches to the various problems of the information-processing functions of the nervous system will require an integrated understanding of the essence of all of the scientific disciplines which are grouped under the general name of neuro biology. The rich feast of information offered up in this Handbook will enable those in the non-chemical disciplines to pick and choose those areas of chemical information pertinent to their immediate interests. Similar types of compendia by physiologists, anatomists, cyberneticists, and psychologists have been helpful to chemists and continue to be so.

Book Neural Metabolism In Vivo

    Book Details:
  • Author : In-Young Choi
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-03-08
  • ISBN : 1461417880
  • Pages : 1168 pages

Download or read book Neural Metabolism In Vivo written by In-Young Choi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 1168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the preface: “Neural Metabolism In Vivo aims to provide a comprehensive overview of neurobiology by presenting the basic principles of up-to-date and cutting-edge technology, as well as their application in assessing the functional, morphological and metabolic aspects of the brain. Investigation of neural activity of the living brain via neurovascular coupling using multimodal imaging techniques extended our understanding of fundamental neurophysiological mechanisms, regulation of cerebral blood flow in connection to neural activity and the interplay between neurons, astrocytes and blood vessels. Constant delivery of glucose and oxygen for energy metabolism is vital for brain function, and the physiological basis of neural activity can be assessed through measurements of cerebral blood flow and consumption of glucose and oxygen.... This book presents the complex physiological and neurochemical processes of neural metabolism and function in response to various physiological conditions and pharmacological stimulations. Neurochemical detection technologies and quantitative aspects of monitoring cerebral energy substrates and other metabolites in the living brain are described under the “Cerebral metabolism of antioxidants, osmolytes and others in vivo” section. Altogether, the advent of new in vivo tools has transformed neuroscience and neurobiology research, and demands interdisciplinary approaches as each technology could only approximate a very small fraction of the true complexity of the underlying biological processes. However, translational values of the emerging in vivo methods to the application of preclinical to clinical studies cannot be emphasized enough. Thus, it is our hope that advances in our understanding of biochemical, molecular, functional and physiological processes of the brain could eventually help people with neurological problems, which are still dominated by the unknowns.” -- In-Young Choi and Rolf Gruetter
