Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 - November 28, 1859) was an American short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820), both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. His historical works include biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith and Muhammad, and several histories of 15th-century Spain dealing with subjects such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors and the Alhambra. Irving served as the U.S. ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846. He made his literary debut in 1802 with a series of observational letters to the Morning Chronicle, written under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. After moving to England for the family business in 1815, he achieved international fame with the publication of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. in 1819-20. He continued to publish regularly-and almost always successfully-throughout his life, and just eight months before his death (at age 76, in Tarrytown, New York), completed a five-volume biography of George Washington. Irving, along with James Fenimore Cooper, was among the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe, and Irving encouraged American authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Edgar Allan Poe. Irving was also admired by some European writers, including Walter Scott, Lord Byron, Thomas Campbell, Francis Jeffrey, and Charles Dickens. As America's first genuine internationally best-selling author, Irving advocated for writing as a legitimate profession, and argued for stronger laws to protect American writers from copyright infringement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly all readers today know Washington Irving as the author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Irving is one of America's most enduring and beloved authors. Bracebridge Hall, or The Humorists was originally published in 1819 as written by one of Irving's pseudonyms, Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. One of Irving's better-known pseudonyms was Diedrich Knickerbocker, a name inextricably linked to New York City and to today's New York Knicks. Bracebridge Hall's introduction greets readers with Irving's wonderment at being America's first internationally-popular author, for he writes, "I was looked upon as something new and strange in literature; a kind of demi-savage." We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Plot introduction[edit] As this is a location-based series of character sketches, there are a number of individual plots. The tales centre on the occupants of an English manor (based on Aston Hall, near Birmingham, England, which was occupied by members of the Bracebridge family and which Irving visited). Plot summary[edit] As this is a series of character sketches, the most effective way currently to describe this book is to list the contents................ Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 - November 28, 1859) was an American short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820), both of which appear in his collection, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. He made his literary debut in 1802 with a series of observational letters to the Morning Chronicle, written under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. After moving to England for the family business in 1815, he achieved international fame with the publication of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., serialized from 1819-20. He continued to publish regularly-and almost always successfully-throughout his life, and just eight months before his death (at age 76, in Tarrytown, New York), completed a five-volume biography of George Washington. Irving, along with James Fenimore Cooper, was among the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe, and Irving encouraged American authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Herman Melville, and Edgar Allan Poe. Irving was also admired by some European writers, including Lord Byron, Thomas Campbell, Charles Dickens, Francis Jeffrey, and Walter Scott. Also, as the United States' first internationally best-selling author, Irving advocated for writing as a legitimate profession and argued for stronger laws to protect American writers from copyright infringement. Washington Irving's parents were William Irving, Sr., originally of Quholm, Shapinsay, Orkney, Scotland, and Sarah (nee Sanders), both Scottish-English immigrants. They married in 1761 while William was serving as a petty officer in the British Navy. They had eleven children, eight of whom survived to adulthood. Their first two sons, each named William, died in infancy, as did their fourth child, John. Their surviving children were: William, Jr. (1766), Ann (1770), Peter (1771), Catherine (1774), Ebenezer (1776), John Treat (1778), Sarah (1780), and Washington. The Irving family settled in Manhattan, New York and was part of the city's small, vibrant merchant class when Washington Irving was born on April 3, 1783, the same week New York City residents learned of the British ceasefire that ended the American Revolution; Irving's mother named him after the hero of the revolution, George Washington. At age 6, with the help of a nanny, Irving met his namesake, who was then living in New York after his inauguration as President of the United States, in 1789. The president blessed young Irving, an encounter Irving later commemorated in a small watercolor painting, which continues to hang in his home. The Irvings lived at 131 William Street at the time of Washington Irving's birth. The family later moved across the street to 128 William St. Several of Washington Irving's older brothers became active New York merchants, and they encouraged their younger brother's literary aspirations....

Book excerpt: Washington Irving's 'Bracebridge Hall, or The Humorists, A Medley' intricately weaves narrative threads together in a tapestry that portrays the vibrant social panorama of an English manor hall in the early 19th century. Written with the delicate touch of Irving's keen observation and droll wit, this collection of character sketches and interlinked stories reveals the customs, characters, and comedic quirks of the British gentry and their servants. With its episodic nature and format evocative of the grand literary tradition of Chaucer and the personal anecdotal charm reminiscent of Sterne, 'Bracebridge Hall' advances the genre of the sketch narrative into a rich exploration of culture and personality, presented through the inviting persona of his pseudonym, Geoffrey Crayon. Irving, an American author whose international sojourns greatly influenced his writings, was steeped in the literary, historical, and societal contexts of both his native and foreign residences. His experiences in England are vividly etched into the vignettes of 'Bracebridge Hall', embodying the enthusiasm and the curiosity of his diverse literary excursions. Irving often blurred the lines between fiction and reportage, drawing upon his travel encounters, literary scholarship, and the unique insights from his later diplomatic career which included a tenure as the U.S. ambassador to Spain. 'Bracebridge Hall' is more than an idle heirloom of literary history; it is a delightful journey into the heart of English country life through the lens of an American luminary. Scholars and enthusiasts of classic literature will find Irving's perception and craftsmanship rewarding, while modern readers will appreciate the universal themes of love, society, and human nature. With its rich tableau of characters and satirical edge, this novel promises a vivid slice of cultural exploration and remains a relevant and fascinating read, embodying the timeless essence of storytelling.
