Book Is It Safe

  • Author : Sarah A. Vogel
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 0520273575
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Is It Safe written by Sarah A. Vogel and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are all just a little bit plastic. Traces of bisphenol A or BPA, a chemical used in plastics production, are widely detected in our bodies and environment. Is this chemical, and its presence in the human body, safe? What is meant by safety? Who defines it, and according to what information? Is It Safe? narrates how the meaning of the safety of industrial chemicals has been historically produced by breakthroughs in environmental health research, which in turn trigger contests among trade associations, lawyers, politicians, and citizen activists to set new regulatory standards. Drawing on archival research and extensive interviews, author Sarah Vogel explores the roots of the contemporary debate over the safety of BPA, and the concerns presented by its estrogen-like effects even at low doses. Ultimately, she contends that science alone cannot resolve the political and economic conflicts at play in the definition of safety. To strike a sustainable balance between the interests of commerce and public health requires recognition that powerful interests will always try to shape the criteria for defining safety, and that the agenda for environmental health research should be protected from capture by any single interest group.

Book excerpt: The Bonneville Power Administration is a federal nonprofit power marketing administration based in the Pacific Northwest . Although BPA is part of the U .S . Department of Energy, it is self-funding and covers its costs by selling its products and services . BPA markets wholesale electrical power from 31 federal hydro projects in the Columbia River Basin, one nonfederal nuclear plant and several small nonfederal power plants . The dams are operated by the U .S . Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation . About 30 percent of the electric power used in the Northwest comes from BPA . BPA's resources -- primarily hydroelectric -- make its power nearly carbon free . BPA also operates and maintains about three- fourths of the high-voltage transmission in its service territory . BPA's service territory includes Idaho, Oregon, Washington, western Montana and small parts of eastern Montana, California, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming . BPA promotes energy efficiency, renewable resources and new technologies that improve its ability to deliver on its mission . BPA also funds regional efforts to protect and enhance fish and wildlife populations affected by hydropower development in the Columbia River Basin . BPA is committed to public service and seeks to make its decisions in a manner that provides opportunities for input from stakeholders . In its vision statement, BPA dedicates itself to providing high system reliability, low rates consistent with sound business principles, environmental stewardship and accountability.

Containers made of these plastics may expose people to small amounts of BPA in food and water. Some animal experiments have found that fetal and infant development may be harmed by small amounts of BPA, but scientists disagree about the value of the animal studies for predicting harmful effects in people. This report discusses this issue and relevant legislation, as well as inquiries into studies currently underway to determine the true harm inherent in BPA and the degree to which people are regularly exposed to BPA.

Book Is That a Fact

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joe Schwarcz
  • Publisher : ECW Press
  • Release : 2014-05-01
  • ISBN : 1770905286

Download or read book Is That a Fact written by Joe Schwarcz and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling “quackbuster” and “tireless tub-thumper against pseudoscience” fishes for the facts in a flood of misinformation (Maclean’s). Eat this and live to 100. Don’t, and die. Today, hyperboles dominate the media, which makes parsing science from fiction an arduous task when deciding what to eat, what chemicals to avoid, and what’s best for the environment. In Is That a Fact?, bestselling author Dr. Joe Schwarcz carefully navigates through the storm of misinformation to help us separate fact from folly and shrewdness from foolishness. Are GMOs really harmful? Or could they help developing countries? Which “miracle weight-loss foods” gained popularity through exuberant data dredging? Is BPA dangerous or just a victim of unforgiving media hype? Is organic better? Schwarcz questions the reliability and motives of “experts” in this “easy-to-understand yet critical look at what’s fact and what’s plain nonsense. “Takes its readers through the carnival of pseudoscience, the morass of half-truths and, finally, the relatively safe road of reproducible scientific knowledge. This journey is made all the more enjoyable by Dr. Schwarcz’s surgical use of words and his mastery of public writing . . . [He] can always be counted on to write about the chemistry of the world in a way that is both entertaining and educational.” —Cracked Science “Written with a light touch and refreshing humor, this book provides a solid, authoritative starting point for anyone beginning to look at the world with a skeptical eye and a refresher for those further along that path.” —Library Journal

Book excerpt: This book reviews the latest venues in bisphenol A (BPA) studies related to human health. BPA, a synthetic compound primarily used to make plastic, is found in many daily products making this compound almost impossible to avoid. BPA can mimic naturally occurring hormones in humans that will be mistaken by our bodies as a proper hormone leading to a wide range of endocrine defects. BPA exposure has raised a number of concerns in the public domain due to numerous studies reporting a plethora of diseases and health conditions that can be directly linked to BPA contamination. This book conveys in a comprehensive manner to the reader the history of BPA; its adverse effects upon exposure, the novel ways to assess its levels in human samples, the non-canonical signalling pathways via which it acts on the human body and the effects induced by BPA exposure upon a variety of human organs and tissues (the immune system, adipose tissue and tooth). This is conveyed using knowledge ascertained from current research on BPA and human health. Contributors to this book are from eight different research laboratories specialised in BPA studies located in seven different countries (Australia, France, Portugal, Belgium, Canada, China and Malaysia).
