Download or read book Boy Sergeant written by Doug Warden and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A college dropout who was drafted to serve his country, Doug Warden was barely 20 years old when he arrived in Vietnam in 1967 as a private first class. He was 'green as a gourd' in the ways of warfare, but he stayed alive, listened and learned from his platoon leader and became a capable leader. He was first a rifleman, then a few days later, a Radio Telephone Operator for his platoon leader and then for his company commander. He gave up the relative safety of serving in the company command post to return to his platoon. He became a squad leader, platoon sergeant, and platoon leader in a remarkable short period of time. He would return to the states a staff sergeant with 5 months time in grade. Along the way, Doug became one of the most decorated soldiers in the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry. He was awarded two Silver Stars for gallantry in action, the Bronze Star for Heroism, the Soldier's Medal, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, three Purple Hearts, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the Valorous Unit Award for his service in Vietnam. In addition, he earned the Combat Infantry Badge and the Parachutist Badge.

Book Call Me Sergeant Rock

Download or read book Call Me Sergeant Rock written by Dan Rodgers and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sergeant Rock evolves from a native, baseball-playing, church-going Christian and skinny college kid to a well-trained killing machine in Vietnam. Leaving California to take part in the Tet Offensive in 1968, he finds the culture shock between the two overwhelming. Thrust into war and killing, he finds his approach to life and death must change quickly, but he holds fast to his beliefs. Though he saves others, his attitude toward killing and death changes for the worse, while his approach toward life improves. Sergeant Rock is a much better person for the choices he makes. In the course of a single Tet Offensive battle, his company loses all but 13 men, as 126 soldiers die in two hours. His faith increases when he meets his guardian angel during the battle. Sergeant Rock pushes his squad to their limits because he knows that death may lie just beyond the next bush. He may be only 20, but he thinks like an old veteran. With the body count in his mind, he wonders if he can ever be around normal people again. He experiences many horrors and watches friend after friend die as heroes. The hardships his squad must face, such as going without fresh water or clothes for 57 days, being shot down in a chopper, and just trying to stay alive are overwhelming. How much can our minds take before they crack? Sergeant Rock believes divine intervention is the only reason he is alive to tell his story.

Book Call Me Sergeant Rock

Download or read book Call Me Sergeant Rock written by Dan Rodgers and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Dan Rodgers was in college taking pre-med, had a possible professional baseball career in the offing, and was driving race cars hoping to get on the NASCAR circuit when he received his dreaded draft notice. Two days before he married his lovely wife, Sue, Dan was drafted into the Army. The author and a few friends were sent to Vietnam on the adventure of a lifetime. Dan was a squad leader and sergeant in the Vietnam War and was directly involved in the Tet Offensive in 1968. At one point during Tet, his company lost 126 men in less than two hours. Dan earned the Silver Star when he and a comrade rescued five soldiers trapped in an armored tank. He was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts. At one point, Dan was asked to become a war correspondent and carry a mini camera. He kept notes on whatever paper he could find to write on, but writing the names of dead comrades was tough. Dan lives with the pain of losing his personal friends. His wife is a testament to his nightly torment, as he still suffers with nightmares and flashbacks of the war. Writing this book started as an exercise to relieve stress. Dan would present his writings to doctors, who in turn suggested that he form a chronological order of events. The book Call Me Sergeant Rock was born.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 50s have been idealized in nostalgia for the naivet of the populace and the birth of rock and roll music. But there were other factors at work that greatly affected the lives of the 50s generation. Factors such as the Korean police action, a military that had not yet fully accepted the idea that a soldier could be acquitted at a court-martial, and a society that wasnt quite ready for religious and racial harmony. COLLEGE-BOY LIEUTENANT is a story of a young man, STEVE STILLMAN, who joins the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) so he can complete his college career without being drafted into the Army. As he graduates, marries, and enters the service as a second lieutenant, Steve encounters a myriad of situations. His education into the Army way and his growth from boyhood to manhood in the 50s military and its culture are major factors in this sometimes humorous, sometimes serious novel. When Steve reports for duty at Fort Lee, Virginia, he leaves his new wife, LAURA, behind because she is expecting their first child in little over a month. This provides him with the opportunity to experience barracks living and to make friends with two other young lieutenants, each of a different religion. As the weeks go on, the young men experience attitude changes and are toughened by their training. They decide to attend religious services together weekly in a nearby town and the search for an acceptable religious facility is disturbing but results in an easy choice. The training progresses through classroom work where Korean Army officers are included. Language differences lead to some hi-jinx but the striking philosophical differences become apparent. When the training finally ends, Steve and one of his two friends, SKEETER WALTERS, are assigned to remain at Fort Lee. They both take 15-day leaves to make family arrangements: Steve to move Laura and their new baby to Virginia and Skeeter to marry his childhood sweetheart and move her there, too. When Steve and Laura arrive at their new apartment in Virginia, they busy themselves with the usual matters of getting accustomed to a new community. Meanwhile, Steve learns he has no real duties in the Army and he breaks a cardinal rule by asking for an assignment. Meantime, Lauras mother comes for a visit and is appalled by their living quarters, persuading them to move. There are two important developments as Steve and Laura begin to search for a new apartment. First, Steve is appointed Assistant Defense Counsel for Special Courts-Martial and the soon-to-be-discharged Defense Counsel gives him an education on the astounding military system of jurisprudence. In addition, he learns the unpleasant reason why Skeeter did not resume their friendship. When Skeeter tells Steve the apartment next to his is available, Steve and Laura decide to rent it, hoping that proximity will alleviate the problem. Steves work after appointment to the court becomes one of the main elements of this story through the several court battles that take place. Some reveal the basic unfairness of the military system while others have a dramatic or humorous twist. His blossoming abilities result in an offer to be sent to law school but an evening at the officers club and a blatant example of the dictatorial nature of the system convinces him otherwise. Meanwhile, a second job assignment - that of Post Ration Breakdown Officer - becomes another main story element. Responsible for the issue of all food at the army post, Steve learns how to wield the power of the militarys true currency, coffee. He uses it to acquire a field jacket, electric calculators, and powerful friends who save the day more than once. Woven throughout the story are the day-to-day worries of Army life, the day-to-day problems of a young married couple with a baby living in a less than conventional environment, and the humorous incidents relevant to both. One particul

Book Life Experiences of a Fifteen Year Old Boyhood Soldier

Download or read book Life Experiences of a Fifteen Year Old Boyhood Soldier written by Thomas D. O'Dell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-01-07 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hard to remember all the experiences I faced during the war years. After fifty-some years, I have now sat back and taken the time to recall my lost memories of the Korean War. It all started in counseling with my VA counterparts. When retelling my experiences to these men who had lived through the same types of tribulations as I had, who now were suffering from shell shock and post-traumatic stress disorder, I found it surprising when they related to me that I was an inspiration. They were impressed I had been promoted to sergeant while still a boy of fifteen. I guess I hadnt realized the magnitude of my accomplishments until a group of my peers, my equals, pointed out to me how amazing my life really was. So now Id like to share my memories of the war through the eyes of a child. In compiling this story I was brought back to my early years when life was both hard and joyful. So if you have the time, I have the story of a fifteen-year-old soldier boy to spin for you.

Book Bunnyman Seventeenth Century Dutch Genre Painting

Download or read book Bunnyman Seventeenth Century Dutch Genre Painting written by William Sergeant and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the true story of one small boy, me, Will Sergeant, navigating the 60's and 70's, a woolly-back (hick) spawned one drunken night on the outskirts of a Nazi pocked and battered Liverpool, growing up with the spectre of WW2 still creeping about most adults padlocked minds. I trudge on into a piss wet 1970s, just as the pustules of teenage years approach popping point. It is a heady time of power cuts, strikes, flying pickets, bread shortages, skinhead gangs, IRA bomb scares, nuclear war fears, rock gigs, glam clothes, drowned motorbikes, explosives, dead-end jobs and the usual school lessons of chicken strangulation. With the help of music, I manage to navigate myself through the sinking sand of prog rock and into the safety of punk. My boots still muddy with a bad attitude, I head into the winter of discontent to become a post-punk trailblazer worshipped all over the world as a god. Well? An inventive and influential guitarist of some note at the very least.
