Book excerpt: Camden Joy tells the picaresque tale of an American rock 'n roll band as they travel below both the Mason-Dixon Line and the cultural radar in early 1991. As the Persian Gulf War escalates in the background, we follow the four members (including a drummer who, like the author, is named Camden Joy) on solo and group adventures amid the vacuous American landscape, of diners, clubs, colleges, and hotels. Boy Island is at once a eulogy for the formerly limitless possibilities of the American road and, ultimately, a meditation on the redemptive power of music and friendship.

Book The Boy Castaways of Black Lake Island

Download or read book The Boy Castaways of Black Lake Island written by James Matthew Barrie and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boy Castaways of Black Lake Island is an illustrated adventure story by J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. It records the terrible adventures of the Llewelyn Davies boys in the Summer of 1901. It includes thirty-five mounted photographs with typeset captions and a preface by Peter Llewelyn Davies. The photographs depict a swash-buckling tale of a pirate, tiger, crocodile, vultures, and the tropical island explorations of George, Jack, Peter, and Porthos, Barrie's Newfoundland dog, standing in alternately as a pirate's pet, a lion, and a devoted guard standing watch over the sleeping children. Barrie prepared the book as if it were written by Peter, who was only four years old at the time; it includes an introduction "by" the boy. The table of contents gives headlines supposedly taken from 16 chapters, but there is no actual prose backing them up. The list of illustrations, however, is accurate, with captions for the 35 photos and the frontispiece which make up the bulk of the book.

Book Island Boy

Book excerpt: Have you wondered about your purpose in life? Island Boy chronicles seven years of a remote life. His existence was neither planned nor wanted. His life journey is ravaged by severe epileptic seizures, isolation, and depression. His only comfort is his grandmother, Cootie, who wrapped him in love. She taught him to pray and trust in a God who would one day provide salvation through Jesus Christ. Island Boy would learn that like him, Jesus also faced rejection, and would be his Savior and Friend. The doubtful uncertainty of his future could transform into an incredible reality. Travel down the river with its twists and turns to see what God wrought in the life of a young man whom He had not forgotten. Book Review 1: "This amazing man, John Woods, is a prime example of an overcomer! God had a plan for John's life and has used him to be a blessing to others. John served our Church as Interim Pastor, Religious Education Director, Bible Teacher, and Youth Leader. He and his wife Janet are a blessing to all who know them. John has an inspiring story. My wife, Ann, and I are looking forward to reading Island Boy." -- Pastor Ken Pennell Former Missionary to Ecuador Retired Pastor of Fort Pierce Alliance Church Book Review 2: "What a special honor to write an endorsement for my husband. I have witnessed the unfolding of this memoir. The life this dear man has lived is now on paper for all to read. Recording the actual events of his extraordinary life is only the beginning. Throughout countless hours of John's writing, I saw him stop, pray, and make certain he explained the spiritual significance of what he had gone through. Living a purposeful life means learning from past experiences. John has utilized these lessons to equip himself with compassion and understanding for others. I, and so many others, are recipients of John's goodness and kindness. As you read Island Boy, you will get a glimpse of this servant of God I am privileged to walk beside." -- Janet Woods, BA Education Teacher, Author of Deskmate to Helpmeet Book Review 3: "My name is Gail Leonard. I am the Headmaster of Heritage Christian Academy in East Tennessee. I have known John Woods for many, many years, both on a professional and a personal level. When I think of John Woods, three words come to mind – honesty, integrity, and long suffering. John is a true example of a modern-day Job of the Old Testament. John, like Job, is a true man of God in every sense of the word. He has suffered countless hardships, persevered, and overcome great obstacles. Where many would have given up in such circumstances, John waited with unwavering faith and patience for God to move. John’s relationship with God is a living testament to the miracles that still happen today to those who wait upon the Lord." -- Gail Leonard, Headmaster Heritage Christian Academy New Tazewell, Tennessee Book Review 4: "John Woods’ life and testimony is a mosaic of God’s amazing grace. His story is a fascinating read of how God worked to bring those pieces together, give new life by faith in Christ, and raise up a faithful servant of Christ and his church. I can’t wait to see the whole book. John’s life continues to be lived as a witness of the gospel’s power today. It is a tremendous honor to serve as his pastor, and you’ll be tremendously blessed by his testimony. Come and hear as he tells you what God has done for his soul (Ps. 66:16)." -- Wayne Meadows, DMin Poplar Springs Baptist Church Hiram, Georgia
