Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early years of Atlantic City (AC) boxing, the fight game was bustling. An array of ring talent, from club fighters to champions, came to the shore to compete at thriving venues like the Northside's Waltz Dream Arena and Convention Hall on the boardwalk. Although ring action was plentiful, the biggest fights were still happening elsewhere, and boxing was just one of many entertainment options in AC. However, everything changed once gambling came to town. As casinos popped up along the boardwalk, Atlantic City fights got bigger and bigger. By the late 1970s, boxing was on the rise, and within a few years, business was booming. Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson ushered in the city's peak era in the late 1980s, a time when more than just fight fans turned their attention to Atlantic City for some of the biggest sporting events ever. Although AC never again topped the impact of those days, boxing action at the shore remained vital for decades to come.

Book excerpt: Atlantic City is a screenplay inspired in part by events that took place in Catskill, NY in the early 1980's. The story follows Leon, a young fighter modeled after a teenage Mike Tyson, who is plucked from a juvenile prison and trained to be a champion boxer. However, despite Leon's considerable talent, he also has a dark side, which creates friction between his two trainers, Teddy and Gus. One of the primary themes of this story is integrity, which is a virtue espoused by both Teddy and Gus. However, this principal is challenged by Leon whose potential offers redemption, particularly for Gus, and a second chance at the glory that was taken away from him in the opening scene. As Gus becomes seduced by Leon's talent, he ignores the growing signs of trouble, and his relationship with Teddy begins to deteriorate. Teddy is well aware of the path Leon is heading down and knows that without discipline, he will become a danger to himself and others. He is also concerned with Gus' willingness to sell out his own ideals due to the prospect of fame. Ultimately this conflict escalates to a level which threatens to alter the lives of all three men.

New names were dangled before me and now I want to know more about them. Where was I when they fought for glory? What kind of lives did they lead? Now I am on a treasure hunt for answers to those questions. This book has whet my appetite for more. Carol Golden-Media Assistant, Marion, IA

Book Third Man in the Ring

Download or read book Third Man in the Ring written by Mike Fitzgerald and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Officiating a professional boxing match can be a thankless job. When a match goes well, no one focuses on the referee. But when a controversy arises, everyone remembers the man who made the call. Third Man in the Ring explores the lives of thirty-three officials as they discuss what goes on inside the ropes and recount the disputes and clashes that have occurred when they worked at home and abroad. The referees share stories from the high-profile fights they worked, with such superstars as Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes, and Julio Cesar Chavez. Readers will hear from Rudy Battle, the first ref to officiate a title fight in an Eastern bloc country, and about Mills Lane, the third man during the infamous Mike Tyson/Evander Holyfield ear-biting match. Several officials reveal memorable moments such as arbitrating contests in nations experiencing civil unrest. One referee admits fearing for his life after disqualifying a hometown hero in front of a packed stadium, while another recalls his experience officiating in communist North Korea. MMA legend Big John McCarthy describes from his experience the differences between officiating a boxing contest in a traditional ring versus the increasingly popular mixed martial arts (MMA) events held in a cage. Readers will also hear stories from refs who have gone Hollywood, consulting on film sets alongside such legends as Sylvester Stallone. An old boxing adage states, The best referees are the ones no one knows are there. Third Man in the Ring sheds much-needed light on these hardworking officials and their stories.

Book The Statues and Legacies of Combat Athletes in the Americas

Download or read book The Statues and Legacies of Combat Athletes in the Americas written by C. Nathan Hatton and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The violence of combat sports left a mark on how fans and communities remembered athletes. As individual endeavors, combat sports have often produced more detailed, emotionally poignant, and deeply personal stories of triumph than those associated with team sports. Commemorative statues to combat athletes are therefore unique as historical markers and sites of memory. These statues tell remarkable stories of the athletes themselves, but also the people and communities that planned and built them, the cities and towns that memorialized them, the fans who followed them, and the evolution of memory and place in the decades that followed their inauguration. Edited by C. Nathan Hatton and David M. K. Sheinin, The Statues and Legacies of Combat Athletes in the Americas brings together an interdisciplinary team of scholars from across North America to interrogate the intimate and layered meanings attached to these monuments to the lives and legacies of combat athletes.

Book TrumpNation

Download or read book TrumpNation written by Timothy L. O'Brien and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensively researched biography that goes beyond the hype to “separate Trump the reality from Trump the reality show” (USA Today). Now with a new introduction by the author, this entertaining look inside the world of Donald Trump is chock full of rip-roaring anecdotes, jaw-dropping quotes, and rigorous research into the business deals, political antics, curious relationships, and complex background of the forty-fifth US president. Granted unprecedented access, Timothy L. O’Brien traveled across the country and up and down the East Coast with Trump on his private jet, wheeled around Palm Beach with him in his Ferrari, and spent hours interviewing him in his home, in his office, and on the golf course. He met with the entrepreneur’s closest friends and most aggressive rivals, while compiling a treasure trove of Trumpisms from the Donald himself: Trump on the public’s enduring fascination with Trump: “There is something crazy, hot, a phenomenon out there about me, but I’m not sure I can define it and I’m not sure I want to.” Trump on naysayers: “You can go ahead and speak to guys who have four-hundred-pound wives at home who are jealous of me, but the guys who really know me know I’m a great builder.” Trump on the art of self-promotion: “You might as well tell people how great you are, because no one else is going to.” Ultimately, when O’Brien’s research revealed that Trump’s business record and annual spot on the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans might be more fantasy than reality, he—like so many others who have dared to tangle with the former host of The Apprentice—found himself in a courtroom. In a new introduction, O’Brien reflects on the recent wave of TrumpMania and updates readers on what it’s like to depose one of the world’s most litigious businessmen—and win.

Book excerpt: Nothing in the annals of sports has aroused more passion than the heavyweight fights in New York in 1936 and 1938 between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling — bouts that symbolized the hopes, hatreds, and fears of a world moving toward total war. Acclaimed journalist David Margolick takes us into the careers of both men — a black American and a Nazi German hero — and depicts the extraordinary buildup to their legendary 1938 rematch. Vividly capturing the outpouring of emotion that the two fighters brought forth, Margolick brilliantly illuminates the cultural and social divisions that they came to represent.
