Artists and students prefer this notebook due to its lack of repeated horizontal and vertical lines. It is preferred to use for design concepting, free-form sketching, calligraphy and scrapbooking. He honed his craft fighting battles royale for wealthy white members of the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club, eventually receiving financing for his career from club founders. He went on to win two lightweight titles and set numerous records. He was the draw for the highest admission paid for a ringside seat--$100,000--and was named "Fighter of the Year" in 1944. Like most black pugilists of his day he struggled against discrimination in the sport. Despite this, he sustained an impressive 18-year professional career--117 fights, 83 wins, 40 by KO. Walker retired from the ring penniless and went back to shining shoes, the money set aside for him by his handlers mysteriously depleted.

Book excerpt: The epic story of war and medicine from the award-winning author of North Woods and The Piano Tuner is "a dream of a novel...part mystery, part war story, part romance" (Anthony Doerr, author of All the Light We Cannot See). Vienna, 1914. Lucius is a twenty-two-year-old medical student when World War I explodes across Europe. Enraptured by romantic tales of battlefield surgery, he enlists, expecting a position at a well-organized field hospital. But when he arrives, at a commandeered church tucked away high in a remote valley of the Carpathian Mountains, he finds a freezing outpost ravaged by typhus. The other doctors have fled, and only a single, mysterious nurse named Sister Margarete remains. But Lucius has never lifted a surgeon's scalpel. And as the war rages across the winter landscape, he finds himself falling in love with the woman from whom he must learn a brutal, makeshift medicine. Then one day, an unconscious soldier is brought in from the snow, his uniform stuffed with strange drawings. He seems beyond rescue, until Lucius makes a fateful decision that will change the lives of doctor, patient, and nurse forever. From the gilded ballrooms of Imperial Vienna to the frozen forests of the Eastern Front; from hardscrabble operating rooms to battlefields thundering with Cossack cavalry, The Winter Soldier is the story of war and medicine, of family, of finding love in the sweeping tides of history, and finally, of the mistakes we make, and the precious opportunities to atone. "The Winter Soldier brims with improbable narrative pleasures...These pages crackle with excitement... A spectacular success." —Anthony Marra, New York Times Book Review

Book Born Under a Bad Sign

Download or read book Born Under a Bad Sign written by Max Razo and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Review A born-again's harrowing autobiography retraces his path from an emotionally impoverished childhood, through a successful criminal career and, finally, to the redemption of the confessional. Razo assures his reader that his story will be unembellished, with no false modesty or undue embarrassment, and after the first few pages, it's clear he will keep his word. Razo begins his meditation with his earliest memories of growing up working-class in the dusty, sunny atmosphere of post-war San Diego. Despite the city's burgeoning diversity and sense of opportunity, his veteran father's American Indian heritage runs the family into trouble and teaches Razo some early lessons on the harsh realities of American culture. Though his family does help keep him in school for a while, his mother and father are over-extended with Razo and his five sisters. Though the emotions run hot between his mother and father usually it seems between rage and a begrudging commitment there is little feeling left over for the children. Razo doesn't shirk from any topic and provides some unique insights into the awkward presexuality that develops between the members of such a large cloister of siblings, especially when there is only one male to go around. It's a brave choice and makes good on Razo's promise of full disclosure. Through the machinations of poverty, prison, drugs and kung fu, Razo eventually impresses a major player with his martial arts and so finds himself one of Hell's Angels and on his way toward an illicit seven-figure salary. These years aren't overworked with analysis, and even when some regret seeps in, it seems a bit half-hearted (he was having fun, after all). The ragged emotions of such a life, though familiar territory in fiction and nonfiction alike, are still made interesting by their sheer detail and a narrative voice that isn t polished enough to hide the author's hell-bent and engaging character. Razo's life is colorful to be sure, and he was even a successful off-roading champion for a spell, but the real interest is Razo's unlikely negotiations of the mortal pitfalls of the drug trade amid so many murdered and murderous friends. Skeptical readers will conclude the author was saved more by a plea deal than by holy intervention, but it's Razo's story and there is no doubting that he's told it as he lived it. A harrowing, willful account of a life led hard and fast. -Kirkus Discoveries

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Be Loved: An MS Story, follows the unexpected adjustments Trebor makes to provide a stable life for his precious children. His adult daughter and young grandson, cast out and homeless, turn to Trebor for aid. Disabled with the debilitating symptoms of multiple sclerosis, his daughter becomes dependent on her father for day-to-day care. Though that co-dependence tests Trebor, it also gives birth to a greater bond. Trebor is determined his daughter won’t live a life of sadness. He doesn’t see her disease as a reason to count her out. Yet, his efforts to provide her with the thrills, pleasures and joys the rest of the world enjoys so effortlessly only sends his spirit soaring as high as the sky for it to only suddenly crash as low as though into a darkened pit. As each day passes, Trebor realizes his daughter’s progressive and challenging condition not only intrudes on the normal flow of desires she has in life —but also his. Bound to caring for his daughter, and raising his grandson, Trebor feels romantic love is no longer a possibility. To know love’s warmth, and to receive and share its fondness again, seem out of the question. His devotion primarily belongs to his children now. Yet, mysteriously, fascination enters his family’s lives. A woman, her challenges similarly rooted to those of his daughter’s, arrives unexpectedly into Trebor’s world – and takes over part of his consciousness. This woman ignites in him an abundance of passion and desire. Romance is on fire. But can Trebor still be loved?
