The breed is also commonly known as the 'Flanders Cattle Dog' as well as being known by the breed's literal French translation of 'Cow Herder of Flanders.' Traditionally the Bouvier des Flandres had its tail docked and its ears cropped. A male trained trench dog, named Nic, who served during World War 1 was awarded a multiple titles at dog shows after the war and is considered the founder of the Bouvier des Flandres breed. In modern times the Bouvier des Flandres is mainly employed as a guard dog, a police dog or a domestic household pet. The breed is known to be gentle, loyal, protective and loving by nature.
