Book Bourgeois Ideology and Education

Download or read book Bourgeois Ideology and Education written by Steven Snow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies the origins and central assertions of bourgeois ideology as well as the reasons for their persuasive power, and offers pedagogical tools to weaken them. The author suggests techniques for use in the classroom, the community and the imagination that subvert negative stereotypes about poor people and individualist explanations for socio-economic status. Written from an ecumenical socialist perspective combining Marxist, neo-Marxist, and anarchist perspectives, this book utilizes a broad interdisciplinary scope, encompassing political theory, religion, political psychology, and literature.

Book Knowledge Ideology and the Politics of Schooling

Download or read book Knowledge Ideology and the Politics of Schooling written by Rachel Sharp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, this book argues that a theory of ideology is essential to a theory of education. It relates developments in the Marxist theory of ideology to the analysis of schooling in a capitalist society. Beginning with an appraisal of the early twentieth century liberal social theorists, including Weber, Durkheim, Veblen and Mannheim, it demonstrates that the weakness of their approaches arose from a failure to comprehend adequately the nature of capitalism. It then outlines the state of the theory of ideology at the time and applies the concept in an analysis of contemporary schooling, concluding with a discussion of its political implications. The application of the theory of ideology offers important possibilities for a radical socialist strategy on education.

Book Class Ideologies and Educational Futures

Download or read book Class Ideologies and Educational Futures written by D W. Livingstone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic and detailed analysis of class relations in advanced capitalist societies as a basis for understanding both class differences in educational practices and the relative effects of class and other social background factors on public attitudes toward education. Secondly, the book offers an empirically-grounded summary of the contending educational ideologies in advanced capitalism, through a discourse analysis of the public statements of spokes-persons for major class groupings. Thirdly, using the data from several public opinion surveys in Ontario, profiles of public attitudes on critical education issues are interpreted in terms of the actual effects of class and other social background factors, as well as the mediating influences of contending ideologies. Finally a general approach and array of tactics for creating practical alternative educational and social futures are illustrated through the book.

Book Schooling Ideology and the Curriculum RLE Edu L

Download or read book Schooling Ideology and the Curriculum RLE Edu L written by Len Barton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the different contributions to this book range over a wide spectrum of substantive issues, they share a common interest. This is a concern to explore the ways in which notions of the relations between theory and practice, between belief and action, can be used to develop three kinds of sensitivity in the sociology of education. A sensitivity towards how school systems are created, maintained and made to function; towards developing a more refined, critical and constructive awareness of the reliability and validity of descriptions, analyses and explanations offered in this field of study; and a sensitivity towards the ways in which changes take place within the education system and how the insights and realisations generated in the discipline might be used to control such occurrences.

Book Bourgeois Equality

Download or read book Bourgeois Equality written by Deirdre N. McCloskey and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last 200 years have witnessed a 100-fold leap in well-being. Deirdre McCloskey argues that most people today are stunningly better off than their forbearers were in 1800, and that the rest of humanity will soon be. A purely materialist, incentivist view of economic change does not explain this leap. We have now the third in McCloskey's three-volume opus about how bourgeois values transformed Europe. Volume 3 nails the case for that transfiguration, telling us how aristocratic virtues of hierarchy were replaced by bourgeois virtues (more precisely, by attitudes toward virtues) that made it possible for ordinary folk with novel ideas to change the way people, farmed, manufactured, traveled, ruled themselves, and fought. It is a dramatic story, and joins a dramatic debate opened up by Thomas Piketty in his best-selling Capital in the 21st Century. McCloskey insists that economists are far too preoccupied by capital and saving, arguing against the position (of Piketty and most others) that capital induces a tendency to get more, that money reproduces itself, that riches are created from riches. Not so, our intrepid McCloskey shows. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, among the biggest wealth accumulators in our era, didn't get rich through the magic of compound interest on capital. They got rich through intellectual property, creating billions of dollars from virtually nothing. Capital was no more important an ingredient to the original Apple or Microsoft than cookies or cucumbers. The debate is between those who think riches are created from riches versus those who, with McCloskey, think riches are created from rags, between those who see profits as a generous return on capital, or profits coming from innovation that ultimately benefits us all.

  • Pages : 315 pages

Download or read book Marx and Education written by Robin Small and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marx and Education is the first assessment of the educational thought of Karl Marx (1818-1883) and its later influence, in the light of developments at the close of the twentieth century. It provides a new perspective, in which many aspects of Marx's ideas are seen clearly for the first time, freed from misleading associations and outdated prejudices. Marx's thinking on education touches on many still current issues: about personal development, the nature of learning, and the ultimate aims of education, as well as the relations between the school and society. Robin Small explores Marx's approach to each of these issues and in relating them to later developments brings the story up to the present day.

Book The Radical Bourgeoisie

    Book Details:
  • Author : Katherine Auspitz
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1982-03-31
  • ISBN : 9780521238618
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book The Radical Bourgeoisie written by Katherine Auspitz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982-03-31 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Radical Bourgeoisie traces the development of the political culture that sustained the Third Republic in France. It examines the centrality of education to Republican ideology and describes the political organization of the center-left alliance that coalesced in the Radical Party. Professor Auspitz challenges several widely held interpretations of modern French history and reassesses the role of French Radicals as thinkers and politicians. Against complaints of the left that they were petty bourgeois ideologues, of the right that they were dogmatic atheists, and of the center that they were small-minded and corrupt, Professor Auspitz attempts to vindicate the radicals as generous in their objectives, serious in their reflections, and effective in their strategies. The study also explains the importance of anticlericalism and of a new concern for the role of women and workers in defining an emerging secular culture.

Book The Crisis of Bourgeois Ideology and of Anticommunism

Download or read book The Crisis of Bourgeois Ideology and of Anticommunism written by Stefan Engel and published by Verlag Neuer Weg. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justifiably, more and more people are losing confidence in the dominant politics. But what lessons do the workers and the masses in the world draw from the extensive crises? Bourgeois ideology has lost its power of attraction and is in deep crisis. An ideological struggle over interpretation and conclusions has broken out. Since the open crisis of reformism and modern revisionism, anticommunism has become the main obstacle in the building of the consciousness of the masses. However, anticommunism itself is in crisis, causing it to be constantly modified. This book follows the conviction that the time is ripe for an ideological offensive of scientific socialism. The books, Götterdämmerung Over the "New World Order," Dawn of the International Socialist Revolution, and Catastrophe Alert! What Is to Be Done Against the Willful Destruction of the Unity of Humanity and Nature? contain the analysis of the reorganization of international capitalist production as new phase of imperialism, along with the conclusions for the strategy and tactics of the international socialist revolution. This book has the task to complete this by dealing with the ideological side. It is the first of four volumes of the work, The Crisis of Bourgeois Ideology, and the Doctrine of the Mode of Thinking, which will be published as Nos. 36 to 39 of the Revolutionärer Weg series.
