Book The Boundary Integral Equatio Method in Axisymmetric Stress Analysis Problems

Download or read book The Boundary Integral Equatio Method in Axisymmetric Stress Analysis Problems written by Adib A. Bakr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boundary Integral Equation (BIE) or the Boundary Element Method is now well established as an efficient and accurate numerical technique for engineering problems. This book presents the application of this technique to axisymmetric engineering problems, where the geometry and applied loads are symmetrical about an axis of rotation. Emphasis is placed on using isoparametric quadratic elements which exhibit excellent modelling capabilities. Efficient numerical integration schemes are also presented in detail. Unlike the Finite Element Method (FEM), the BIE adaptation to axisymmetric problems is not a straightforward modification of the two or three-dimensional formulations. Two approaches can be used; either a purely axisymmetric approach based on assuming a ring of load, or, alternatively, integrating the three-dimensional fundamental solution of a point load around the axis of rotational symmetry. Throughout this ~ook, both approaches are used and are shown to arrive at identi cal solutions. The book starts with axisymmetric potential problems and extends the formulation to elasticity, thermoelasticity, centrifugal and fracture mechanics problems. The accuracy of the formulation is demonstrated by solving several practical engineering problems and comparing the BIE solution to analytical or other numerical methods such as the FEM. This book provides a foundation for further research into axisymmetric prob lems, such as elastoplasticity, contact, time-dependent and creep prob lems.

Book Numerical Methods in Mechanics of Materials

Download or read book Numerical Methods in Mechanics of Materials written by Ken P. Chong and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the dynamic digital age, the widespread use of computers has transformed engineering and science. A realistic and successful solution of an engineering problem usually begins with an accurate physical model of the problem and a proper understanding of the assumptions employed. With computers and appropriate software we can model and analyze complex physical systems and problems. However, efficient and accurate use of numerical results obtained from computer programs requires considerable background and advanced working knowledge to avoid blunders and the blind acceptance of computer results. This book provides the background and knowledge necessary to avoid these pitfalls, especially the most commonly used numerical methods employed in the solution of physical problems. It offers an in-depth presentation of the numerical methods for scales from nano to macro in nine self-contained chapters with extensive problems and up-to-date references, covering: Trends and new developments in simulation and computation Weighted residuals methods Finite difference methods Finite element methods Finite strip/layer/prism methods Boundary element methods Meshless methods Molecular dynamics Multiphysics problems Multiscale methods

Book Optimum Design of Structures

Download or read book Optimum Design of Structures written by Lahbib Chibani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the integrated approach of analysis and optimal design of structures. This approach, which is more convenient than the so-called nested approach, has the difficulty of generating a large optimization problem. To overcome this problem a methodology of decomposition by multilevel is developed. This technique, which is also suitable for implementation on parallel processing computers, has the advantage of reducing the size of the optimization problem generated. The geometric programming for both equality and inequality constraints is used in the optimization.

Book Shell and Spatial Structures Computational Aspects

Download or read book Shell and Spatial Structures Computational Aspects written by Guido De Roeck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years powerful engineering workstations for a reasonable price become a valuable tool for the design of complicated constructions such as shell and spatial structures. This availability causes an increasing use of advanced numerical techniques for the static and dynamic analysis of these structures, also in the non-linear range. The I.A.S.S. Working Group nO 13 concerned with "Numerical Methods in Shell and Spatial Structures" and the Department of Civil Engineering of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven have taken the initiative to organise an International Symposium, providing a forum for discussion and exchange of views between researchers, specialists in numerical analysis on one hand and designers, practising engineer ings on the other hand. These Proceedings contain the papers presented at the Symposium, held in Leuven, July 14-16 1986. The papers are organised in five sections 1. Shell structures 2. Spatial structures 3. Dynamic analysis 4. Non-linear analysis 5. Presentation and interpretation of results The papers covering more than one domain are classified following the main subject. We hope that researchers as well as practising engineers will find a lot of useful information in the book.

Book Advances in Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Download or read book Advances in Fluid Mechanics Measurements written by MOHAMED GAD-EL-HAK and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One cannot overemphasize the importance of studying fluids in motion or at rest for a variety of scientific and engineering endeavors. Fluid mechanics as an art reaches back into antiquity, but its rational formulation is a relatively recent undertaking. Much of the physics of a particular flow situation can be understood by conducting appropriate experiments. Flow visualization techniques offer a useful tool to establish an overall picture of a flow field and to delineate broadly its salient features before embarking on more detailed quantitative measurements. Among the single-point measurements that are particularly difficult are those in separated flows, non-Newtonian fluids, rotating flows, and nuclear aerosols. Pressure, shear stress, vorticity, and heat transfer coefficient are also difficult quantities to measure, particularly for time-dependent flows. These and other special situations are among the topics covered in this volume. Each article emphasizes the development of a particular measuring technique. The topics covered were chosen because of their importance to the field, recent appeal, and potential for future development. The articles are comprehensive and coverage is pedagogical with a bias towards recent developments.

Book Finite Rotations in Structural Mechanics

Download or read book Finite Rotations in Structural Mechanics written by Wojciech Pietraszkiewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deformation near a material particle of the classical continuum is produced by successive superposition of a rigid-body translation, a pure stretch along principal directions of strain and a rigid-body ro tation of those directions. The rotational part of deformation is par ticularly important in the non-linear analysis of thin-walled solid structures such as ~eams, thin-walled bars, plates and shells, since in this case finite rotations may appear even if the strains are infinite simal. It seems that the research concerning the application of finite ro tations is carried out independently in different fields of structural mechanics. Theoretical and numerical methods developed and the results obtained for a particular type of the structure or for a particular ma terial behaviour not always are used to analyse similar problems for other types of structures or for another material behaviour. Since the research in this field had been growing rapidly, it was decided to organize an informal international meeting, under the auspi ces of the European Mechanics Co~mittee, entitled: Euromech Colloquium 197 "Finite Rotations in Structural Mechanics". The meeting was held on 17 - 20 September 1985 in Jablonna, a small suburbian area of Warsaw.

Book Stochastic Structural Mechanics

Download or read book Stochastic Structural Mechanics written by Y.K. Lin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-21 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of papers presented at the U.S.-Austria Joint Seminar on Stochastic Structural Mechanics held on May 4 and 5, 1987. The general theme of the two-day program was the applications of probability and statistics to structural mechanics. Within this general theme a great variety of subject matters were covered, ranging from analytical and computational algorithms to specific problems in different branches of engineering. The format of the bi-national seminar with limited attendance permitted ample time for presentation and discussion. The discussion was als6 contributed by several participants of another bi-national seminar, the U.S.-Japan Joint Seminar on Stochastic Approaches in Earthquake Engineering, which followed immediately on May 6 and 7, 1987. The scheduling of the two seminars back-to-back enhanced greatly the exchange among the experts in engineering stochastics from the three nations. The Joint Seminar was organized according to the U.S.-Austria Cooperative Science Program established in 1984. We are indebted to the following government agencies and organizations for financial assistance, including the National Science Foundation, and the Florida Atlantic University Foundation in the United States, and Fonds zur Forderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung, Land Tirol, Bundeswirtschaftskammer, Bundesministerium flir Wissenschaft und Forschung, and Osterreichische Forschungsgemeinschaft in Austria. Most credits, however, must be accorded to each of the authors whose contributions were the very basis of any success we might be able to claim. Our special thanks are due to Mrs.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by W. H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
