Book excerpt: While most of Africa has been described as a political and economic disaster zone, Botswana stands out as a democracy that has achieved rapid economic growth for more than three decades. Clark Leith traces the evolution of Botswana's economic policies and democratic political systems And The forces that have shaped them since the country achieved independence in 1966. Leith shows that other African nations endowed with resources failed to stimulate growth but Botswana prospered because of a democratic political system and economic interests that were anchored in tradition, tempered by leadership, and shaped by growing institutions.

Book excerpt: The major trends in terms of GDP growth rates, conditions of market forces, and the core inflation crisis in Botswana are analyzed in detail in the report. It has been suggested that although the recovery from the financial crisis of Botswana is the strongest compared with other middle-income countries, the overall results do not point toward a positive development in the economy. The need for authorities to take up certain measures and modify their methods of functioning is pivotal to Botswana's survival in the existing fragile economic environment.

Download or read book Botswana written by International Monetary Fund. African Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper examines the stability of the financial sector in Botswana. The financial system has grown rapidly over the years, but there is still substantial scope for expansion. Banks, institutional investors, and the Botswana Stock Exchange have grown steadily over the years based on political and economic stability, savings from diamond exports, and fiscal surpluses. Botswana’s financial stability framework could benefit from upgrading. Data gaps and incomplete information on cross-border capital flows and growing interconnection with the nonbank financial sector may entail risks. In this regard, close cooperation among regulators and proper assessment of macro-financial risks associated with banks’ large exposures will contribute to more effective financial system supervision.
