Book Vegetation of the Tropical Pacific Islands

Download or read book Vegetation of the Tropical Pacific Islands written by Dieter Mueller-Dombois and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998 with total page 918 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The islands of the tropical Pacific Ocean encompass a vast range of climate, geography, and geology. The flora of these islands is similarly diverse, and the study of their vegetation and landscapes is a challenge because of the great distances separating them. Dieter Mueller-Dombois and the late F. Raymond Fosberg are recognized as the leading authorities on the plant diversity and ecology of Pacific islands. This book is a synthesis of the vegetation and landscapes of the islands of the Pacific Ocean. It is organized by island group and includes information on geography, geology, and climate, as well as soil and vegetation types, land use, floristic patterns, phytogeographic relationships, and human influences on vegetation. The book features over 400 color photographs, plus dozens of maps and climate diagrams.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until relatively recently the valuable tropical montane cloud forests (hereaf ter usually referred to as TMCFs) of the world had scarcely come under the assaults experienced by the downslope montane and lowland forests. TMCFs are not hospitable environments for human occupation, and their remoteness (except in places near Andean high mountain settlements and in the Ethiopian Highlands) and difficult terrain have given them de facto protection. The ad jacent upper montane rain forests have indeed been under assault for timber, fuelwood, and for conversion to grazing and agriculture for many decades, even centuries in the Andes, but true cloud forest has only come under ex ploitation as these lower elevational resources have disappeared. They have also been "nibbled" at from above where there have been alpine grasslands under grazing pressure. Increasingly now, however, these cloud forest eco systems are being fragmented, reduced, and disturbed at an alarming rate. It is now becoming recognized that steps must be taken rapidly to increase our understanding of TMCF and to achieve their conservation, because: their water-capture function is extremely important to society; • their species endemism is high; they serve as refugia for endangered species being marginalized in these environments by increasingly transformed lower elevation ecosystems; they are relatively little studied; yet, their value to science is extremely high; they have low resilience to disturbance; vii viii Preface and many other reasons, which will be discussed subsequently in this publi cation.

Book Plant Invasions in Protected Areas

Download or read book Plant Invasions in Protected Areas written by Llewellyn C. Foxcroft and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive global review of all aspects of alien plant invasions in protected areas. It provides insights into advances in invasion ecology emanating from work in protected areas, and the link to locally relevant management support for protected areas. The book provides in-depth case studies, illuminating interesting and insightful knowledge that can be shared across the global protected area network. The book includes the collective understanding of 80 ecologists and managers to extract as much information as possible that will support the long-term management of protected areas, and the biodiversity and associated ecosystem services they maintain. “This outstanding volume draws together pretty much all that can be said on this topic, ranging from the science, through policy, to practical action”. Dr. Simon N. Stuart, IUCN Species Survival Commission, UK. "This important and timely volume addresses two of the most serious problems affecting biodiversity conservation today: assessing the extent to which protected areas are impacted by biological invasions and the complex problems of managing these impacts. Written by leading specialists, it provides a comprehensive overview of the issues and gives detailed examples drawn from protected areas across the world". Professor Vernon H. Heywood, School of Biological Sciences, University of Reading, UK
