Book excerpt: What does a nearly forgotten fire of old have to do with the health and vitality of your church? The answer will surprise you! The Great Boston Fire of 1872, which remains the largest fire in Boston's history, is a unique and incredibly intriguing story that offers so many profound insights, messages, and warnings to those willing to delve into the details of the event. In fact, examining some of those very details is one of the purposes of this book, and yet its primary focus regards something far greater than merely bringing to light commonly overlooked pieces of historical information. This book's utmost purpose and mission is to comparatively use information about the great fire in a discussion about figurative fires of negativity (gossip, bickering, power wars, selfishness, burn out, and more) that occur within modern churches, and the book's emphasis regards how you and your church can go about effectively combating these fires. The hope behind this book is that God would allow the story of the great fire to get your attention, to be paralleled with various principles within his Word, and to bring you to a better understanding of how to prevent and extinguish the church-crippling fires of negativity that our arsonist-enemy Satan is hoping will destroy your church! The learning will be interesting and challenging, but it will also be transforming and empowering for the life of your church. If you're determined to let God's Word dictate how you deal with fires of negativity, you can go ahead and say, "There will be no Boston fire in MY church!" As you and others begin applying the biblical principles identified within this book, your church will make sure of it. Let the fireproofing begin! A nine-session study guide is included in the appendix of this book, and it designed to be used within a Sunday school or cell group setting. Each session's material should last approximately 35-45 minutes within a talkative group, and the nine sessions correspond with the nine chapters of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few events can be said to have changed the face of Boston forever. Eventually destroying 775 buildings and causing millions of dollars in damage to the commercial section that we now know as Boston's business district, the Great Boston Fire of 1872 was a spectacular conflagration that destroyed "old Boston" and allowed a phoenix to arise from the ashes. This exciting new pictorial history brings to life the drama that began one Saturday evening in 1872 when a fire started in an empty hoop-skirt factory on the corner of Summer and Kingston Streets. At the time, Boston was in the throes of a epizootic disease that caused all horses in the area to be ill. This caused a virtual shutdown of transportation and city services and delayed the fire department's response to calls for help. By the time the breathless firemen arrived, the fire had already consumed the granite five-story factory and burst through the mansard roof, which acted as a flue and spread the fire. Within an hour, much of Summer Street was engulfed in flames and firemen from near and far were being summoned to combat the spread of the deadly blaze. By midnight, the fire had spread through Summer Street to Arch Street and was attacking Winthrop Square. Old Trinity Church, at the corner of Summer and Hawley Streets, had given itself up to the flames.

Coming barely a year after the infamous Chicago fire, Boston’s inferno turned out to be one of the most expensive fires per acre in US history. Yet today few are aware of how close Boston came to destruction. Boston author Stephanie Schorow masterfully recounts the fire’s history from the foolish decisions that precipitated it to the heroics of firefighters who fought it. Lavishly illustrated with period artwork and photographs and published just before the fire’s 150th anniversary, The Great Boston Fire captures the drama of a life-and-death battle in the heart of the city.
