Like no other research tool the electron microscope by the brothers Ernst and Helmut Ruska and their brother-in-law Bodo von Borries marks the dawn of modernity. Their avant-garde idea of 1931 to examine under a microscope with electrons has expanded human vision until today. The world's first commercial overmicroscope for discoveries in the world of the smallest followed in Berlin 1939. 1948 the German development and application of overmicroscopy was revived in Düsseldorf. As a key instrument of research it has completed a triumphant march and it has won the attention of the Nobel Prize Committee for awards twice. 1986 the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded for the invention of the Berlin electron microscope. 2017 the Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded for the sharp electron-optical imaging of fragile biomolecules through the modern application of low temperature. Ihre avantgardistische Idee von 1931 mit Elektronen zu mikroskopieren hat bis heute das menschliche Sehvermögen erweitert. In Berlin folgte 1939 das erste kommerzielle Übermikroskop der Welt für eine Entdeckungsreise in die Welt des Kleinsten. 1948 wurde die deutsche Fortentwicklung und Anwendung der Übermikroskopie in Düsseldorf wieder belebt. Es hat als Schlüsselinstrument der Forschung einen Siegeszug ohnegleichen absolviert, und es hat die Aufmerksamkeit des Nobelpreis-Komitees zweimal gewonnen. 1986 wurde der Nobelpreis für Physik für die Erfindung des Berliner Elektronenmikroskops vergeben. 2017 wurde der Nobelpreis für Chemie für die scharfe elektronenoptische Abbildung von fragilen Biomolekülen durch die moderne Anwendung von Tieftemperatur vergeben. Dieses Buch zeichnet in Geleit seiner Erfinder den Weg der Elektronenmikroskopie von Berlin nach Düsseldorf nach.

Since 1997 he has been President of the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities Essen (Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut). He specialises in theory and methodology of historical sciences, the history of historiography, intercultural aspects of historical thinking, theory of historical learning, and the history of human rights.

Book excerpt: Teaching a Dark Chapter explores how textbook narratives about the Fascist/Nazi past in Italy, East Germany, and West Germany followed relatively calm, undisturbed paths of little change until isolated "flashpoints" catalyzed the educational infrastructure into periods of rapid transformation. Though these flashpoints varied among Italy and the Germanys, they all roughly conformed to a chronological scheme and permanently changed how each "dark past" was represented. Historians have often neglected textbooks as sources in their engagement with the reconstruction of postfascist states and the development of postwar memory culture. But as Teaching a Dark Chapter demonstrates, textbooks yield new insights and suggest a new chronology of the changes in postwar memory culture that other sources overlook. Employing a methodological and temporal rethinking of the narratives surrounding the development of European Holocaust memory, Daniela R. P. Weiner reveals how, long before 1968, textbooks in these three countries served as important tools to influence public memory about Nazi/Fascist atrocities. As Fascism had been spread through education, then education must play a key role in undoing the damage. Thus, to repair and shape postwar societies, textbooks became an avenue to inculcate youths with desirable democratic and socialist values. Teaching a Dark Chapter weds the historical study of public memory with the educational study of textbooks to ask how and why the textbooks were created, what they said, and how they affected the society around them.
