Together they spent six months among the Kayans, Kenyahs and the nomadic Punans, drank their rice spirit to the accompaniment of haunting chants, danced and sang, blew poisoned darts from the blow-pipe, were tattoed, and dwelt in longhouses whose features included chandeliers of human heads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative study of the peoples of central Borneo offers an unusually detailed description of a pre-colonial society. Professor Rousseau analyses a region characterized by great ethnic diversity and unravels the relation between ethnicity, social organization, language, and cultureamong its peoples.Geographically, central Borneo is divided into several river basins, each of which forms part of a different country. Because of this, the area has traditionally been dealt with in a fragmented way by academics. Yet the records of scholars, missionaries, and administrators that have been keptsince the area came under colonial control at the beginning of the twentieth century provide ethnographic and historical data virtually unmatched in the rest of the insular South East Asia. Professor Rousseau's extensive survey of the available literature and archival material, backed up by manyyears of fieldwork in the region, challenges some long-held views and assumptions. First he shows that, while ethnic identity is normally expected to act as a divider between social groups, this area of great ethnic diversity actually forms a single society. Secondly, although it is thought thatsmall-scale, stateless societies tend to show little evidence of social inequality, he demonstrates that the communities of central Borneo have until recently had a clearly hierarchical structure. The uniquely detailed evidence presented in this study and its comparative approach shed an entirely new light not only on central Borneo, but also on the fundamental nature of societies.

Book The Expedition to Borneo of H M S Dido for the Suppression of Piracy

Download or read book The Expedition to Borneo of H M S Dido for the Suppression of Piracy written by Henry Keppel and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1843 Henry Keppel, captain of S. M. S. Dido, and James Brooke, the new Rajah of Sawarak, meet in Singapore. When Keppel learns from Brooks about the serious problem of piracy in Malaysia, he decides to follow him to Borneo and to help his new friend to take actions against pirates. In his travel diary for the years 1843 to 1846 Keppel describes Brooke's campaign against piracy and his own role in solving the conflicts. The focus of his journal, however, is rather on the description of Borneo. Keppel gives the reader his impressions of the island and its people and local customs. His report is supplemented by a portrayal of James Brookes, based on extracts from Brooke's own journal.Reprint of the original edition from 1846.

Book Nomads of the Borneo Rainforest

Download or read book Nomads of the Borneo Rainforest written by Bernard Sellato and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1994-08-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Punan societies of Borneo, traditionally nomadic rainforest hunters and gatherers, have undergone a transformation over the past centuries. As downriver farming peoples expanded upstream and their cultures and technologies diffused, the Punan gradually abandoned their nomadic existence for a more sedentary life of trade-related activities and subsistence agriculture. But the culture that has emerged from these changes is still based on the enduring ideological premises of nomadism. This study, historical in perspective, examines the many factors-ecological, economic, commercial, political, social, cultural, and ideological-that have played a part in this continuing transformation. Foreword by Georges Condominas.

Book The Expedition to Borneo of H M S Dido

Download or read book The Expedition to Borneo of H M S Dido written by Henry Keppel and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2009 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visit of her majesty's ship Dido to Borneo, and her services against the pirates, occupy comparatively so small a portion of this volume, that some excuse may be necessary for its leading title. It was only by undertaking to make the account of them part of the narrative, that I could prevail upon my friend Mr. Brooke to intrust me with his Journal for any public object; and when I looked at his novel and important position as a ruler in Borneo, and was aware how much of European curiosity was attached to it, I felt it impossible not to consent to an arrangement which should enable me to trace the remarkable career through which he had reached that elevation. I hope, therefore, to be considered as having conquered my own disinclination to be the relater of events in which I was concerned, in order to overcome the scruples which he entertained against being the author of the autobiographical sketch, embracing so singular a portion of his life, which I have extracted from the rough notes confided to me. That his diffidence in this respect was groundless will, I trust, be apparent from these pages, however indifferently I may have executed my unusual task, during a long homeward sea-voyage; and, from the growing interest which has arisen throughout the country for intelligence on the subject of Borneo and the adjacent archipelago, I venture also to indulge the belief that the general information will be deemed no unfit adjunct to the story of personal adventure.
