Book excerpt: &‘ In 2012, following his investigation of the deaths of two babies in childbirth at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton coroner Gordon Matenga asked, &‘ Does New Zealand have the safe, world-leading system the Government says we do, or are we losing babies because the balance has swung too far towards the idea that because childbirth is natural, then the philosophy of “ non-intervention” is best?' &‘ Babies' deaths reignite maternity row' , the New Zealand Herald announced.' — from the introduction by Linda BryderIs New Zealand &‘ the best country to give birth' ? Historian of medicine Linda Bryder explores how New Zealand developed a unique approach to the role of midwives in childbirth in the 1990s, and analyses the consequences of that change for mothers and babies. The Best Country to Give Birth? traces the genesis of the 1990 Nurses Amendment Act, which allowed midwives to practise alone in the community, back to the homebirth movement of the 1970s, and explores the aftermath of the Act including the withdrawal of GPs from maternity care. In investigating the consequences of the reforms, it uncovers repeated criticism of services &– and what were deemed preventable deaths &– from coroners, commissioners for health and disability, other health professionals including some midwives, academic researchers, and parents and families. How and why does maternity care in Aotearoa differ from other countries? How has it shaped the equitable care of our mothers and babies? Why have critical reports had so little impact? This is a major historical account of an issue at the heart of our maternity care.

Download or read book Sunshower written by Karen Kenyon and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunshower is the story of a journey through a human experience—surviving the loss of a love by suicide, and the return of hope. Much has been written about why someone would take his or her life, and about the prevention of suicide, but there is little recorded to throw light on what it is like to endure such a dramatic severing. Sunshower begins with a portrait of Karen and Dick Kenyon's early marriage, the birth of their son, Richard, the birth and death of a baby daughter, Johanna. Then on November 3, 1978, Dick did not come home from work; instead, without warning, he took his own life. The author charts her grief process, her awareness, her questions and turmoil, and her eventual path back to life and love. Sunshower is a mystery story in the sense that life is a mystery. It is told through the eyes of one person, but all our struggles and joys are somehow one. We all love, we all lose. Surviving after suicide is only a dramatic metaphor for survival of any kind. Every day we live we are choosing life, creating life. Symbolically a sunshower is the union of sadness and joy, of rain clouds and of light. The sunshowers of our lives are our releases and baptisms into new life. This book, though it deals with and faces death, is most importantly about life and about love. Sunshower is the story of loss, but it is also a story of transformation and rebirth. “Karen Kenyon has written a remarkably honest account in SUNSHOWER. In writing of a harrowing experience, she has avoided both self-pitying sentimentality and hidden angers. It is a valuable -- if not priceless --addition to the literature of suicide.” Harold Greenwald, Ph.D.— August 6, 1981 "...we do a tremendous amount of suicide prevention work and I'm sure your contribution in the form of this book will help many people." -- Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross “SUNSHOWER has been recommended by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross to women who are in need of support--the ripple effect goes on, your gift of sharing and compassionate understanding.” -- Janet Marlow for Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Download or read book Vatican Council Notebooks written by Henri de Lubac and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Surprising news!” With these words, Fr. Henri de Lubac, S.J., whose orthodoxy had been so vigorously attacked, responded to the announcement of his selection to participate in the 2nd Vatican Council. His participation as a theologian and expert would make a lasting impact on the Council, and his insights and comments are recorded in this long-awaited volume. These Notebooks trace the two years of preparation, the four conciliar sessions, and the three periods between sessions. They give us the opportunity to assist at the discussion of the schemas (initial drafts of conciliar texts), but also, during the meetings of the theological commission and the sub-commissions, at the elaboration and correction of the texts submitted to the Council fathers. The eminent theologian de Lubac is a sure guide for the reader, introducing us to the theological ferment of the Council and helping us to grasp what was at stake in the often animated debates. De Lubac does not hesitate to express clearly what he thinks of the theologians around him, of the new concepts appearing because of the Council, or of the problems he judges to be most serious for the Christian faith. These Notebooks invite us to a greater historical and theological understanding of the Council. Besides information about the numerous aspects of the conciliar assembly, what makes the testimony of these notebooks so captivating is the strongly rendered presence of men and their psychology. De Lubac excels in sketching the portrait of the participants with only a few words. Among the many interesting encounters, he tells of deepening his acquaintance with Josef Ratzinger, whom he describes as a “theologian as peaceable and kindly as he is competent”. In the same way, during the long discussion over the drafting of the constitution Gaudium et Spes, he observed the assertiveness of Karol Wojtyła, whose interventions struck him because of the seriousness, the rigor, and the solidity of his faith, which created in him a lively sense of spiritual friendship, which was reciprocated.
