Book War Time Strikes and Their Adjustment Classic Reprint

Download or read book War Time Strikes and Their Adjustment Classic Reprint written by Alexander M. Bing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War-Time Strikes and Their Adjustment The writer has endeavored in the following pages to give as complete an account as space and available material will allow of the labor difficulties which occurred during the war and of the machinery which was created to adjust them. It has, of course, been impossible to deal with every one of the thousands of strikes which took place - even controversies of considerable size and importance had to be omitted - nor has any attempt been made to thoroughly cover the events of the post-armistice period. But inasmuch as most of the labor difficulties after the signing of the armistice were directly connected with those which took place during the war itself, it was considered desirable to include some of these later occurrences as far as such a course was practicable. Book Germany After the Armistice

Download or read book Germany After the Armistice written by Maurice Berger and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany After the Armistice: A Report, Based on the Personal Testimony of Representative Germans, Concerning the Conditions Existing in 1919 Lieutenant berger's volume will rank high among post-war documents. It is not a treatise, not a philippic, not a plea for or against the order which has arisen in Germany since the Revolution. It is a report on conditions in Germany, moral and physical, such as the author found them during the armistice period - ma report which bears all the earmarks of fidelity and open-mindedness. It is, moreover, characterized by a vivid sense of values and a penetrating understanding of German psychology. The New Germany or the New Prussia (for the author didn't carry his inquiry beyond the borders of Prussia) is described not as a hostile Entente critic might see it, but as the Germans, or Prus sians, themselves see it. It was a happy idea to go among these people in the early period of the revolutionary reorganiza tion and to let them say for themselves what was their attitude toward the new order, and what were their mental reactions to their war crimes and to the peace of justice (to them a peace of violence) which the Allies were about to impose on them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Railroads and the War, Vol. 3: American Transportation If it be true that we learn from experience and profit by our mistakes, it should be worth our while to review past. Events and to draw from them lessons for future guidance. The activities of some of our Army services in France during the Great War have been ably set forth by those who took a leading part in directing them and shaping their policies, but others have lacked unofficial historians willing to compile the necessary records and publish the reports. Among the latter is the Transportation Corps, which was responsible for the move ment of our troops and supplies, from their arrival in France before Novem ber 11 1918, until their embarkation at the French ports after the signing of the armistice. The French, however, are more methodical than are we, and reports compiled by officers previously trained for, and during the war in charge of various services are now being published. Among them, on a recent visit to Paris, it was my good fortune to find the one which deals with the French railroads during the war. Book The French Railroads and the War

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Railroads and the War: Third Part, American Transportation If it be true that we learn from experience and profit by our mistakes, it should be worth our while to review past, events and to draw from them lessons for future guidance. The activities of some of our Army services in France during the Great War have been ably set forth by those who took a leading part in directing them and shaping their policies, but others have lacked unofficial historians willing to compile the necessary records and publish the reports. Among the latter is the Transportation Corps, which was responsible for the movement of our troops and supplies, from their arrival in France before November 11 1918, until their embarkation at the French ports after the signing of the armistice. The French, however, are more methodical than are we, and reports compiled by officers previously trained for, and during the war in charge of, various services are now being published. Among them, on a recent visit to Paris, it was my good fortune to find the one which deals with the French railroads during the war. The preface to this work was written by General Gassouin, who was the French Director General of Military Transportation during most of the year 1918, and to whose helpful cooperation much of the successful accomplishment of our Transportation Corps was due. The body of the report was prepared by Colonel Le Henaff and Captain Bornecque. The former, a regular Army officer who had been assigned to the study of military transportation for many years before the war, was the French representative on the Inter-Allied Transportation Committee, organized to coordinate the French, British, Italian, Belgian and American land transportation efforts, and was thus in constant touch with our problems of force and equipment as well as with our organization and methods. The latter, a university professor previous to the war, was in charge of the Army Postal Service and was probably more conversant with the location of our forces than any other officer in either the French or American Army. Both are, therefore, qualified to act as our critics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arsenal Cannon: January, 1920 On May 22, 1917, the second year of our training, a steel flag-pole, izo ft. High, was erected in honor of the anniversary of the day that the Supreme Court deeded the Arsenal Grounds to the officials for training purposes. Of course, a big celebration was held, as it was the first real pleasure we had had since being in camp. This day was called Supreme Day in honor of the Court's decision. Our next source of enjoyment was the Opening of the Shop Annex on November 4, 1917. This building, by far the best fitted for our training, had been con structed during the semester; But our pride, that year, did not cease tg grow until after the dedication of the Service Flag in December, 1 17. We then entered upon our third year of training, rookies no more, but some of us corporals, a few sergeants, and' the rest well drilled soldiers in educational lines. In May 1918, we were ordered to sell War Savings Stamps. As Americans never fail, the camp went over the top. Then on November 11, 1918, although we had not gone across the water, the Armistice was signed and the war ended. Joy of all joys was this and we had a big review and parade for the people of Indianapolis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Responsibility for the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Responsibility for the War Classic Reprint written by William George Stewart Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Responsibility for the War The evidence as to the immediate causes of the European war has so far been made public by the issue of the German White Book and the British White Papers.1 These documents are already of historic value, and it is important that all who would grasp clearly the development of the situation in the critical days before the outbreak of hostilities should examine closely the materials of information which have been thus officially presented. It will be found by students that these documents require very careful collation, for the situation which they reflect was highly com plex and developing very rapidly. It is well to give this warning. But a study and restudy of the materials thus available will enable the action of the several States in the crisis to be more clearly appreciated and the comparative responsibility of the various parties to be in certain important respects determined. Book The Story of the Fourth Army

Download or read book The Story of the Fourth Army written by Archibald Montgomery and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Fourth Army: In the Battles of the Hundred Days, August 8th to November 11th, 1918 This story has been compiled from the excellent accounts of the operations which have been written by the staffs of the corps and divisions which served in the Fourth Army during the hundred days, supplemented by verbal information given by individual officers, and from the records of the Fourth Army during that period. Though in narrating the events of a period so crowded with incident there must of necessity be many omissions, this book will, it is hoped, be of interest to all who shared in the victories of the Fourth Army, Victories which, in three months of hard and continuous fighting, carried it from within sight of Amiens over the frontiers of France near Avesnes. It is thought, moreover, that the impressions left at the time on the minds of those who took part in operations of such importance will be of interest to the military student and of value to the future historian when a complete history of the World War comes to be written. It is much regretted that it has not been possible to give the narrative of the doings of the II American Corps in so much detail as in the case of the other corps. This is due to the fact that the II American Corps left the Fourth Army soon after the Armistice to join the American Army, and that the reports received from it and from the 27th and 3oth American Divisions did not furnish so many details as those sent in by the British, Australian, and Canadian Corps. Download or read book And the Kaiser Abdicates written by S. Miles Bouton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from And the Kaiser Abdicates: The German Revolution, November, 1918 August, 1919 Much of the history told deals with matters of which the author has personal knowledge. He had been for several years before the war resident in Berlin as an Associated Press correspondent. He was in Vienna when the Dual Mon archy declared war on Serbia, and in Berlin during mobili zation and the declarations of war on Russia and France. He was with the German armies on all fronts during the first two years of the war as correspondent, and was in Berlin two weeks before America severed diplomatic relations with Germany. The author spent the summer of 1917 in Russia, and watched the progress of affairs in Germany from Stock holm and Copenhagen during the winter of 1917-18. He' spent the three months preceding the German Revolution in Copenhagen, in daily touch with many proved sources of information, and was the first enemy correspondent to enter Germany after the armistice, going to Berlin on November 18, 1918. He attended the opening sessions of the National Assembly at Weimar in February, 1919, and remained in Germany until the end of March, witnessing both the first and second attempts of the Spartacans to overthrow the ebert-haase government. The author's aim in writing this book has been to give a truthful and adequate picture of the matters treated, without any tendency whatever. It is not pretended that the book exhausts the subject. Many matters which might be of inter est, but which would hinder the straightforward narration of essentials, have been omitted, but it is believed that noth ing essential to a comprehension of the world's greatest political event has been left out.
