Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Culture: And the Laying Out and Management of a Country Home Occupied as I have been for the past thirty years in the cultivation and sale of fruit and ornamental trees and shrubs, it is but natural that I should receive numerous inquiries as to varieties, their selection, and their culture. There are many books to which reference might be made, some of which are of marked excellence. Downing's "Encyclopaedia of Fruits" is an enduring monument to the memory of the late Charles Downing and his brother Andrew J. Downing, who initiated the work. Few men would be willing, had they the ability, to give such careful, patient, and exhaustive descriptions of every known variety of fruits, as may here be found portrayed with disinterested faithfulness. But this is a book for the professed horticulturist and orchardist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Hardy Fruit Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hardy Fruit Culture Classic Reprint written by Charles F. Lawrance and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hardy Fruit Culture The term "fruit tree" conjures up, for many people, the image of a great tree with immense spreading branches and wandering roots. "We have no room for fruit trees," they say, and that is the chief reason why many owners of small gardens do not plant fruit trees. Insecurity of tenure provides another reason - the man who hires his garden on a very short lease does not care to plant trees because he is under the impression that he cannot move them if, and when, he gives up the land. The general belief that fruit trees will not come into bearing until they are ten or twelve years old is another thing which militates against the planting of hardy fruits. It is time that all this misunderstanding was swept away; every one should know that when fruit trees are worked on the right kind of stock, they will take up very little room in the garden, they will come into bearing within two or three years after grafting and, if necessary, they may be lifted and moved even when they have been growing in the same spot for six or eight years. With respect to the last point, it is necessary under existing laws, to obtain the permission of the landlord before planting trees in hired gardens; then the trees may be moved when the tenancy expires. Book The Fruit Culture in Japan Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fruit Culture in Japan Classic Reprint written by Tomochika Ikeda and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit Culture in Japan In Japan, arable land is limited in extent, and the population numerous, and owing to the lack of capital the area cultivated by individual farmers is small. The plains, and level ground generally, come first in value, as these are utilised for the cultivation of those cereals which form the principal diet of the Japanese; and on such land no room is found for other produce, including fruits, and orchards are rarely if ever seen. What fruit trees there are, have been planted in spare ground, around peasant's cottages, on embankments, by the roadside, in temple grounds, on steep slopes and on table-lands which are not easily utilised on account of water facilities; also on the outer edge of the embankments of rivers, which are often subject to destruction by floods. It would appear that hill slopes, notwithstanding the heavy growth of wild vegetation they bear, even on a poor and shallow soil, have not been taken advantage of for the cultivation of fruit trees. These conditions still exist, and have done in Japan from ancient times, As instances of this, the persimmon may often be seen flourishing in the situations mentioned above; the pear and peach are found in the dry beds of rivers; and the orange tree and grape-vine are often planted on the slopes of hills, pine fruit has often been produced under such conditions, without much effort, and where the soil and climate are favourable and the grower has paid some attention to the cultivation of his trees, good results have been obtained. Book The Orchard and Fruit Garden

Download or read book The Orchard and Fruit Garden written by Elizabeth Watts and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orchard and Fruit Garden: Their Culture and Produce We have so many excellent large and expensive works on fruit culture, that I should never have thought of writing this one, if its peculiar place had not stood vacant, waiting to be filled. It is the first cheap work on the Orchard and Fruit Garden. Those who, like myself, have had through life some space of land, between a pole and an acre, at command, do not need to be puzzled with lists of hundreds in the selection of the trees they want; their need is one which I have made it my endeavour to supply, i.e. particulars of a few good sorts of fruit trees of all kinds which any careful cultivator can manage, and which may be obtained at any good nursery. The sorts named are good, those I most recommend I have tested, and the directions given respecting their cultivation will be found plain, concise, and practical. I can only hope my little book will be found useful to all who delight in fruit culture, but who cannot command access to voluminous and expensive works upon the subject. Book Small Fruit Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Small Fruit Culture Classic Reprint written by William Terrill Macoun and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Small Fruit Culture The average farmer's home in Canada is not supplied with an adequate amount of small fruits, notwithstanding the ease with which they can be grown. It is a common thing to see a farmer on market day buying strawberries and other small fruits in the town to be taken home and treated as a luxury, when he should produce in his own garden all that he and his family could consume if they ate fruit three times a day. This state of affairs seems to be accounted for mainly by the fact that the farmer thinks he is too busy a man to have and care for a garden. If the farmers of this country only knew how much better they and their families would be with a plentiful supply of fruit they might make a greater eflort than they do to raise enough for home consumption. There are some Canadian farmers, we are glad to say, who do have good gardens of both fruit and vegetables. The garden, which is usually on a well drained piece of land near the home, dries earlier than the fields, and can, therefore, be attended to before work begins in the field. A few hours' labour puts it in such shape that it can be cared for with comparatively little work during the summer. With the following information to guide him, there is no good reason why every farmer should not have a fruit garden.
