Book Bone Health and Osteoporosis

Download or read book Bone Health and Osteoporosis written by United States Public Health Service and published by . This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis illustrates the large burden that bone disease places on our Nation and its citizens. Like other chronic diseases that disproportionately affect the elderly, the prevalence of bone disease and fractures is projected to increase markedly as the population ages. If these predictions come true, bone disease and fractures will have a tremendous negative impact on the future well-being of Americans. But as this report makes clear, they need not come true: by working together we can change the picture of aging in America. Osteoporosis, fractures, and other chronic diseases no longer should be thought of as an inevitable part of growing old. By focusing on prevention and lifestyle changes, including physical activity and nutrition, as well as early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, Americans can avoid much of the damaging impact of bone disease and other chronic diseases. This Surgeon General's Report brings together for the first time the scientific evidence related to the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of bone disease. More importantly, it provides a framework for moving forward. The report will be another effective tool in educating Americans about how they can promote bone health throughout their lives. This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis provides much needed information on bone health, an often overlooked aspect of physical health. This report follows in the tradition of previous Surgeon Generals' reports by identifying the relevant scientific data, rigorously evaluating and summarizing the evidence, and determining conclusions.

Book excerpt: Bone research in recent years has generated much new knowledge, in large measure because of the broad public health implications of osteoporosis and related bone disorders. Bone Formation, the first in a series entitled Topics in Bone Biology, evaluates this new information and formulates novel insights and hypotheses within the broad framework of current knowledge. An easy-to handle and to read work, with concise reviews that are extensively referenced, the chapters in this book are written by internationally known authorities. Particular emphasis is on osteoporosis and related disorders of diminished bone formation. Among the general topics treated is a chapter on biomechanical aspects of bone formation, not often considered in relation to diseases of bone formation. The book constitutes essential reading for those entering the field of bone biology and those who wish to become familiar with up-to-date information in a particular area of bone research.

Book excerpt: Bone: A Treatise is a series of seven volumes devoted to providing the most up-to-date, comprehensive, and authoritative coverage of all aspects of bone. Seventy-four chapters have been written by 127 respected authors, all of whom are actively engaged in basic, applied, and clinical bone research. The seven volumes in this unique series are organized thematically; each volume integrates structure, function, biochemistry, metabolism, and the molecular and clinical aspects of a particular aspect of the biology of bone. Bone-forming cells are treated in Volume I. Bone resorbing cells are covered in Volume II. Volumes III and IV examine the extracellular matrix of bone, with Volume III concentrating on the structure of bone matrix and on bone-specific proteins, while Volume IV focuses on the mineralization (calcification) of that matrix. Volume V addresses the repair and regeneration of bone. Volumes VI and VII explore bone growth and development.

Book The Biochemistry and Physiology of Bone

Download or read book The Biochemistry and Physiology of Bone written by Geoffrey H. Bourne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biochemistry and Physiology of Bone focuses on the advancements of techniques, methodologies, and approaches involved in bone studies, including general anatomy, tissues, collagen fibers, and calcification. The selection first offers information on the general anatomy and histology of bone and bone as a mechanical engineering problem. Topics include strength of healing fractures, nervous influences on bone, growth of the skull, bone strength, primary constituents of bony tissue, and types and organization of bony tissue. The text then elaborates on the ground substance of connective tissue and cartilage, organic matrix of bone, and collagen fibers of connective tissue. The publication takes a look at the ultrastructure and distribution of mineral salts in bone tissue, osteoblast, and osteoclast. Discussions focus on microscopical appearances, integration of morphological and histochemical studies, cytochemistry, distribution of inorganic salts in bone tissue, relation of collagen to its environment, and structure of collagen fibers. The publication also examines pathological calcification, effects of radiation on bone, parathyroid glands and bone, and anterior pituitary regulation of skeletal development. The selection is a dependable source of data for researchers interested in the biochemistry and physiology of bone.

Book excerpt: Bones and Cartilage provides the most in-depth review and synthesis assembled on the topic, across all vertebrates. It examines the function, development and evolution of bone and cartilage as tissues, organs and skeletal systems. It describes how bone and cartilage develop in embryos and are maintained in adults, how bone is repaired when we break a leg, or regenerates when a newt grows a new limb, or a lizard a new tail. The second edition of Bones and Cartilage includes the most recent knowledge of molecular, cellular, developmental and evolutionary processes, which are integrated to outline a unified discipline of developmental and evolutionary skeletal biology. Additionally, coverage includes how the molecular and cellular aspects of bones and cartilage differ in different skeletal systems and across species, along with the latest studies and hypotheses of relationships between skeletal cells and the most recent information on coupling between osteocytes and osteoclasts All chapters have been revised and updated to include the latest research. Offers complete coverage of every aspect of bone and cartilage, with updated references and extensive illustrations Integrates development and evolution of the skeleton, as well a synthesis of differentiation, growth and patterning Treats all levels from molecular to clinical, embryos to evolution, and covers all vertebrates as well as invertebrate cartilages Includes new chapters on evolutionary skeletal biology that highlight normal variation and variability, and variation outside the norm (neomorphs, atavisms) Updates hypotheses on the origination of cartilage using new phylogenetic, cellular and genetic data Covers stem cells in embryos and adults, including mesenchymal stem cells and their use in genetic engineering of cartilage, and the concept of the stem cell niche
