Download or read book Anything for a Hit written by Dorothy Carvello and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dorothy Carvello knows all about the music biz. She was the first female A&R executive at Atlantic Records, and one of the few in the room at RCA and Columbia. But before that, she was secretary to Ahmet Ertegun, Atlantic's infamous president, who signed acts like Aretha Franklin and Led Zeppelin, negotiated distribution deals with Mick Jagger, and added Neil Young to Crosby, Stills & Nash. The stories she tells about the kingmakers of the music biz are outrageous, but it is her sinuous friendship with Ahmet that frames her narrative. He was notoriously abusive, sexually harassing Dorothy on a daily basis. Carvello reveals here how she flipped the script and showed Ertegun and every other man who tried to control her that a woman can be just as willing to do what it takes to get a hit. Never-before-heard stories about artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Steven Tyler, Bon Jovi, INXS, Marc Anthony, and many more make this book a must-read for anyone looking for the real stories on what it takes for a woman to make it in a male-dominated industry.

Well, let me tell you Mark Weiss has raised the bar for rock 'n' roll books with The Decade That Rocked. Mark has always been at the top of his field, and the level of detail and quality put into this book is the ultimate testament to his rock n' roll photographic legacy.” – Sebastian Bach “Mark is the real deal. He may not play the guitar, but that camera is his guitar. He’s a rockstar.” – Gene Simmons "Mark’s energy, his creativity, his drive, his positive attitude and his enthusiasm that make him one of the legends of rock photography. It’s why his work—both old and new—is still so in demand today. Mark Weiss inspires greatness in all he turns his camera lens on. But don’t take my word for it. Just look at the pictures in this book." – Dee Snider “His pictures say as much as the music” – Rob Halford “He was one of the guys. He wasn’t one of the 18 photographers you’d work with that day.” – Alice Cooper “He had that instinct, to recognize our energy and use his technical talent to capture it.” – Joe Perry “The Decade That Rocked breaches a level of intimacy that so many music photographers are lacking today. Each and every photo exemplifies the trust and the synergy between photographer and subject. Download or read book Geese Are Never Swans written by Kobe Bryant and published by Granity Studios. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Packed full of emotion. . . . An influential read with a powerful message.”—Booklist Whether goose or swan, I have wings. And I'll fly. Gus's life is about one thing—swimming. And he knows that the only coach in town who can get him to the Olympics is Coach Marks. So it seems like a simple plan: convince Coach Marks to train him, and everything from there on in is just hard work. Gus has never been afraid of hard work. But there are a few complications. For one thing, Coach Marks was Danny's coach. Danny, Gus's brother, committed suicide after failing to make the national swimming team—a big step on the way to the Olympics. And for another, Gus and Danny didn't exactly get along; Gus never liked living in Danny's shadow. A shadow that has grown even bigger since his death. In this powerful novel about the punishing and the healing nature of sports, Gus's rage threatens to swallow him at every turn. He's angry at his brother, his mother, his coach . . . even himself. But as he works toward his goal and through his feelings, Gus does everything he can to channel this burning intensity into excelling at the sport that he and Danny both loved, and finds solace in the same place he must face his demons: in the water. In addition to Gus's incredible narrative, there are four pieces of original art featured in Geese Are Never Swans. The art was curated by TaskForce, a creative agency that collaborates with the most influential nonprofits, brands, and people taking on the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world. TaskForce builds capacity and community for those shaping a more empathetic society through public opinion and policy. The artists' interpretations of their work are included in the book.
Download or read book Livin on a Prayer The Untold Tommy Gina Story written by Jody Clark and published by Vacationland Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ah, the 80's anthem - "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi - the story of Tommy and Gina: two kids fighting the odds as they just try to give it a shot. In this story, however, Tommy doesn't work on a dock, and Gina doesn't work the diner all day. The thing is, every town has their own Tommy and Gina story. This one just happens to be a little more...unique. The seaside town of York, Maine is the backdrop to this tale, taking you from the 80s to the present day. This is not a Chicken Soup for the Soul type story. But, like soup, it contains many ingredients. Start with a 1/2 pot of Tommy - a Bon Jovi hairband-loving burnout. Add a 1/2 pot of Gina- a dressed-in-black, Cure-loving alterna-chick. Mix in plenty of 80's references then bring to a boil and stir. Add a splash of tragedy with a hint of that could never happen, could it? Sprinkle in a doctor who resembles Christopher Walken and who may or may not be in the mafia. Next, season with a little Mexican sidekick, a tablespoon of tenderness, a splash of a naughty Zumba instructor - at this point the mixture will stiffen. Finally, add three full cups of redemption, true love, and happily ever after! Garnish with yoga pants. In all seriousness, this book is a super-silly comedy, but with a big heart, and although it might be slightly more appreciated if you're from the 80's, it's definitely not a requirement. It's a fun, easy read that will keep you smiling and laughing the whole way though

Download or read book Literacy Beginnings written by Irene Fountas and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Play and language are both important learning tools for the prekindergarten child. Through play and language, they learn about their world and about themselves. Play and language are also the most important tools for early literacy learning. Think of the young child who takes a memo pad and marker around to family members, 'taking orders' for dinner. Like all emergent readers and writers, this child makes no distinction between play and literacy -- both involve curiosity, excitement, learning, and discovery. In Literacy Beginnings, Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas bring their characteristically rich, comprehensive, and practical insights to the frontier of early literacy. They show you how to tap into young children's curiosity to introduce them to the world of literacy in joyful, engaging ways. Based on their many experiences in real prekindergarten classrooms they demonstrate how to: create a classroom community that is play-based, but that also prepares children for the literary-rich world in which they live, promote constructive learning through inquiry, recognize the language and literacy behaviors and understandings that are appropriate instructional goals for preschoolers, use powerful and playful ways to guide children to learn about letters, sounds, and words, [and] support emergent readers and writers through an array of literacy activities"--Back cover.
