Download or read book Bombay Before Mumbai written by Prashant Kidambi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'City of Gold', 'Urbs Prima in Indis', 'Maximum City': no Indian metropolis has captivated the public imagination quite like Mumbai. The past decade has seen an explosion of historical writing on the city that was once Bombay. This book, featuring new essays by its finest historians, presents a rich sample of Bombay's palimpsestic pasts. It considers the making of urban communities and spaces, the workings of power and the nationalist makeover of the colonial city. In addressing these themes, the contributors to this volume engage critically with the scholarship of a distinguished historian of this frenetic metropolis. For over five decades, Jim Masselos has brought to life with skill and empathy Bombay's hidden histories. His books and essays have traversed an extraordinarily diverse range of subjects, from the actions of the city's elites to the struggles of its most humble denizens. His pioneering research has opened up new perspectives and inspired those who have followed in his wake. Bombay Before Mumbai is a fitting tribute to Masselos' enduring contribution to South Asian urban history

Download or read book International Narcotics Control written by L. E. S. Eisenlohr and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1934, International Narcotics Control is concerned with dangerous drugs solely as a subject of international administration. The ultimate questions that this study seeks to answer bear upon the form and function of the international organisms which have been set up to deal with drug traffic. What relation shall the function of a body bear to the method of its appointment, to its composition, and to source of its responsibility? What type of organism will secure the best response from national administrations? What should be the method of contact between national and international bodies? The answers to questions such as these can be found in this study. Divided into two parts, the book discusses important themes like the establishment and the work of the Opium Advisory Committee, the origin and functioning of the Permanent Central Opium Board; and the control of raw opium production in India, former Yugoslavia, Turkey, and Persia. This is an important historical reference work for scholars and students of criminology.

Download or read book Anglo India and the End of Empire written by Uther Charlton-Stevens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard image of the Raj is of an aloof, pampered and prejudiced British elite lording it over an oppressed and hostile Indian subject population. Like most caricatures, this obscures as much truth as it reveals. The British had not always been so aloof. The earlier, more cosmopolitan period of East India Company rule saw abundant 'interracial' sex and occasional marriage, alongside greater cultural openness and exchange. The result was a large and growing 'mixed-race' community, known by the early twentieth century as Anglo-Indians. Notwithstanding its faults, Empire could never have been maintained without the active, sometimes enthusiastic, support of many colonial subjects. These included Indian elites, professionals, civil servants, businesspeople and minority groups of all kinds, who flourished under the patronage of the imperial state, and could be used in a 'divide and rule' strategy to prolong colonial rule. Independence was profoundly unsettling to those destined to become minorities in the new nation, and the Anglo-Indians were no exception. This refreshing account looks at the dramatic end of British rule in India through Anglo-Indian eyes, a perspective that is neither colonial apologia nor nationalist polemic. Its history resonates strikingly with the complex identity debates of the twenty-first century.
