The goal of this effort was to develop a history and reference guide suitable for use in identifying and evaluating the historical significance of missile-related cultural resources. The authors have supplied the information necessary to locate, identify, and understand Army and Air Force guided missile facilities. This, coupled with evaluative guidelines currently being developed within DoD, will help cultural resources personnel make substantive evaluations.Excerpt: The Development of the Defensive Missile Force - The primary responsibility for defending the United States against air attack rested with the Air Force. To accomplish this mission, the Air Force developed a defense-in-depth strategy that encompassed early warning radars, fighter aircraft, and long-range antiaircraft missiles positioned to detect and engage the enemy before they entered American airspace. If the enemy penetrated this outer layer, the last line of defense was the Army's antiaircraft missile batteries that defended key urban, industrial, and military targets. The long-range antiaircraft missile was the Air Force's BOMARC. Development began in 1946 but the first units were not deployed until 1959. BOMARC resembled a long, sleek fighter with sharply swept wings. The 45-foot missile was powered by ramjet engines and traveled at nearly four times the speed of sound. It had an effective range of 440 miles and could carry either a conventional or nuclear warhead. During the 1960s eight BOMARC missile squadrons were deployed along the eastern seaboard and in the midwest. The Army's contribution to the air defense network was the Nike antiaircraft missile system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 23. Chapters: AIM-26 Falcon, AIM-68 Big Q, AIR-2 Genie, CIM-10 Bomarc, LIM-49 Spartan, MIM-14 Nike-Hercules, Operation Bumblebee, RIM-2 Terrier, RIM-8 Talos, S-75 Dvina, Sprint (missile). Excerpt: The CIM-10 Bomarc was the only surface-to-air missile (SAM) ever deployed by the United States Air Force. All other U.S. land-based SAMs were and are under the control of the United States Army. The supersonic Bomarc missiles were the first long-range anti-aircraft missiles. Rocket boosted and then ramjet powered, they were capable of carrying conventional or nuclear warheads. Their intended role in defense was in an intrusion prevention perimeter controlled by the SAGE computer air defense system. Bomarcs sited on the eastern and western coasts of North America theoretically would launch and would destroy enemy bombers before the bombers could drop their payloads on industrial regions. It involved the deployment of tactical stations armed with Bomarc missiles along the east and west coasts of North America and the central areas of the continent. At the height of the program, there were 14 Bomarc sites in the United States and two in Canada. BOMARC and the SAGE guidance system were phased out in the early 1970s since they seemed to be ineffective and costly. Neither of these systems was ever used in combat, so while their combat effectiveness remains untested, they are still perceived as having been an important deterrent. In addition to the USAF, the Bomarc was also deployed by Canada after the country had canceled its advanced Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow manned interceptor in 1959. In 1946, Boeing started to study surface-to-air guided missiles under the United States Army Air Forces project MX-606. By 1950, Boeing had launched more than 100 test rockets in various configurations, all under the designator XSAM-A-1 GAPA (Ground-to-Air...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the selected final remedial action for the radioactive wastes at the BOMARC Missile Site, McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey. The BOMARC Missile Site became contaminated in 1960 as the result of a fire which partially consumed a nuclear warhead-equipped BOMARC missile. The Air Force has decided to pursue excavation and Off-site Disposal of contaminated waste at a Department of Energy (DOE) disposal facility. This is a cost effective, permanent remedy, and is the environmentally preferred alternative. However, should the Air Force be denied the use of a DOE facility, or if other events should dramatically decrease the cost effectiveness of this remedy, then as an interim remedy, the Air Force will maintain the BOMARC Missile Site in accordance with the NEPA No Action Alternative.
