Book A Rifleman Went to War

Download or read book A Rifleman Went to War written by Herbert W. McBride and published by Tales End Press. This book was released on 2012-08-08 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 70 years after it was first published, this book is still one of the all-time classics on the art of military marksmanship, and is required reading at the U.S. Marine Corps Sniper School. The author grew up learning to shoot in the backwoods of Indiana, and went on to compete nationally as a sharpshooter. When World War I broke out in Europe, he was so eager to fight that he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Wounded seven times and finally invalided home after nearly two years on the front lines, he was an enthusiastic soldier and a superb sniper, with over 100 confirmed kills. His story of his time in the trenches includes frequent lessons on the mindset, the tactics, and the weapons of sniping, and has much hard-won advice about personal survival on the battlefield. It stands out as one of the best first-person accounts of World War I.

Book Mechanical Variations of Mauser Bolt Action Military Rifles

Download or read book Mechanical Variations of Mauser Bolt Action Military Rifles written by James A. Wingate and published by . This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collecting these great historical battle rifles is great fun, but the serious novice will soon become confused, and then irritated. The Author, a veteran Mechanical Engineer, knows this, because it happened to him too. He actually wrote this book for his own use, from notes he made to avoid being cheated out of hard-earned gun-collecting investment funds, and now he shares it with you. Its Mauser Model identification procedure guides the new collector in sorting out a specific rifle identity from the world's hundreds of known physical variants, using standard photographic references commercially available to everyone. It is chock full of brand-new close-up photos, mechanical details, info on chamber crests, markings, and the historical time line of the many global manufacturers of this immortal rifle. It is written in a crusty, personal and often irreverent style (but only where irreverence is well past due!)

It explores the full range of Mauser rifles, beginning with the hugely successful Gew 98, which entered service in the time of the Kaiser, provided the basis for the US Springfield M1903 and equipped combatants such as the South African Boers. It also investigates the Kar 98k, which was still in front-line use with Wehrmacht troops in 1945, saw use with Mexican and Yugoslavian forces, and even played a role in the 1990s Balkan conflicts in the hands of snipers. Download or read book Early Military Rifles written by Balázs Németh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conduct of combat operations in open order during the 18th and 19th centuries required an improved firearm with more accuracy than the standard-issue smoothbore infantry musket. Consequently, the appearance of a new type of regular light infantry soldier and an innovative military firearm, the rifle, marked a new age in the history of warfare. During the 18th century both Austria and Prussia fielded light troops armed with rifled firearms, while conflicts in North America involved the deadly long rifle and the innovative Ferguson breech-loader. Rifle-armed specialists also fought for several nations during the Napoleonic Wars. However, it was the decades after 1815 that saw the appearance of successful rifled percussion firearms, paving the way for the widespread issue of rifled weapons. This development was accelerated by the Prussian adoption of the Dreyse 'needle gun' in 1848 and in 1849, the French Minié rifle was the first successful conical ball rifle concept to be issued to regular troops in large numbers. Illustrated throughout with stunning full-colour artwork, this study charts the development, combat use, influence and legacy of rifled firearms in a host of conflicts, from the War of the Austrian Succession of 1740–48 to the Mexican–American War of 1846–48.
