Book Cotton Bollworm Heliocoverpa Zea and Beet Armyworm Spodoptera Exigua Development and Survival on Acala Glanded and Glandless Cotton in New Mexico

Download or read book Cotton Bollworm Heliocoverpa Zea and Beet Armyworm Spodoptera Exigua Development and Survival on Acala Glanded and Glandless Cotton in New Mexico written by Andrew Todd Garnett and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercial cotton cultivars have glands that produce gossypol, a natural chemical defense chemical against insect species-pests; this compound is absent in glandless cultivars. Glandless varieties were initially rejected for commercial production due to insect losses. Lower insect pressure in parts of New Mexico could potentially support production of glandless cotton varieties as a niche crop with added seed value as a potential food source for livestock and human consumption. In 20011 and 2012 trials were conducted at the New Mexico State University Agricultural Science Center in Artesia, NM, to evaluate the development and survival of cotton bollworm and beet armyworm in field to laboratory trials. In 2012 trials were conducted to determine the effects of nitrogen concentration on feeding preference and development on glanded compared to glandless cotton. Beet armyworm and bollworm survival was 12% and 22% higher, respectively, on glandless versus glanded cotton. Development to pupation was longer for larvae fed glanded cotton, requiring an average of two more days for beet armyworm and three more days for bollworm, compared to larvae fed glandless cotton. Beet armyworms fed glandless cotton were 65% heavier at 14 days compared to larvae fed glanded cotton. Mean bollworm weights at 10 days were 43% heavier in larvae fed glandless vs glanded cotton. Fourth instar dry larval weights were not significantly different between glanded and glandless treatments. High N plots had 200 lb N applied while low N plots had 100 lb N. Mean petiole N levels from, date to date, were significantly higher in high N treatment plots 5581 vs 1998 in low N treatments plots. Survival to pupation was affected by presence of glands, with five and eight times higher rates of survival on glandless cotton compared to glanded cotton, beet armyworm and bollworm respectively. Days to pupation were two days longer for beet armyworm and ten days longer for bollworm when fed glanded compared to glandless cotton. Bollworm fourth instar larval dry weights were twice as heavy when fed glandless cotton compared to those fed glanded cotton, but showed no significant difference in beet armyworm dry fourth instar larval weights. Bollworm pupae were 16% heavier on glandless compared to glanded cotton. Beet armyworm pupae weights were not significantly different between the glandless and glanded treatments. Field square damage was higher in glandless cotton plots compared to glanded plots, 7.2% damage compared to 3.4% damage respectively in 2012.

Book Biotechnology and Agricultural Development

Download or read book Biotechnology and Agricultural Development written by Rob Tripp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversy over genetically modified (GM) crops in industrialized countries is paralleled by a loud debate over their potential role in developing countries, with supporters claiming that GM crops are the best hope for reducing rural poverty and hunger, and opponents predicting that they can only bring corporate control of peasant agriculture and environmental disaster. This book offers an examination of the performance of the new technology in the broader context of the agricultural institutions that govern its generation.
