The subjects of mechanical stokers, economizers, and steam piping have been treated at considerable length, and the use and calculation of induced draught fans quite fully explained. Much new material on chimney draught, the result of work extending over a period of years, has been added, as has also a chapter on coal handling and coal-handling machinery. Nearly every chapter has been enlarged and the number of illustrations more than doubled. The chapter on combustion has been extended to cover oil burning and to include the most recent analyses of American coals, together with a detailed description of coal calorimetry as applied to the determination of the heating value of coal purchased on a "heat unit" basis. The chapters on staying riveted joints and boiler testing have each been extended. While the book was planned primarily for the use of students in technical schools, and in the two revisions has been increased so as to meet the needs of the students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, it is felt that the book may prove useful to engineers in general. The supporting data employed are based on modern steam locomotives equipped with superheater and brick arch and fed by means of a live - steam injector. The use of the exhaust steam for drafting the locomotive makes the locomotive power plant differ in principle from the marine or stationary power plant. In the latter the boiler is an independent unit, while in the former the boiler and the engine are interdependent inasmuch as the exhaust of the engine creates the draft for the boiler and the shutting down of the-engine renders the boiler inoperative. Separate the two by substituting mechanical draft for the exhaust jet and there is no reason why the locomotive power plant can not be fitted out with the devices which have been responsible for the low cost Of power generated in marine and stationary power plants. The problem is one of successful adaptation with reliability and moderate maintenance cost, within the present limitations Of clearances and other conditions under which the locomotive must Operate. Here, for the first time, the attempt is made to give the treatment that its importance demands. Although its introduction is evidence of a somewhat radical departure in certain features of boiler practice, yet extended and recent experience clearly indicates the permanence of this departure. Hereafter, the progressive engineer will not adopt the chimney as the sole means of draft produc tion, but will first carefully consider the respective advantages of the chimney and the fan, for the claims of the latter to superiority cannot be disregarded. Manifestly, the individual who in the present day is to decide between the two methods, requires a clear presentation of their respective merits, such as is attempted in this work. Its object is two-fold: First, to instruct by a lucid discussion of the entire subject, with such supplementary information as may be necessary to show the superiority of mechanical draft. Second, to show the special adaptability of the Sturtevant fans for this purpose, and to indicate in some degree the extent to which they have already been applied.
